Ok, first thing: hello, I'm new here :)

Now, there will be a local tournament at my place, I'd like to prepare a 2400 point Dwarf army for it. I have read a lot of topics there carefully, this site is a mine of knowledge :)

The thing is, I have created two lists, and I still think which could be better. Both of them are based on example builds of this topic. Also, I consider myself a beginner (I haven't played for 4 years, and even then I was rather unskilled :P)

Let's go then.

Build one: Let's try the Anvil

Runelord - 398 pts

General

Anvil of Doom, Shield

Runic Talisman: Master Rune of Balance, Rune of Spellbreaking

Runic Armor:: Rune of Stone

Thane - 140 pts

Battle Standard

Runic Armor: Master Rune of Gromril, Rune of Resistance

29 Hammerers - 428 pts

Full Command

Runic Banner: Master Rune of Grungni

34 Warriors - 365 pts

Great Weapons, Full Command

35 Warriors - 410 pts

Rangers, Great Weapons, Full Command

16 Miners - 226 pts

Full Command, Steamdrill

Organ Gun - 120 pts

Grudge Thrower - 170 pts

Engineer

Rune of Accuracy, Rune of Penetrating x2

Cannon - 140 pts

Engineer

Rune of Forging

Total Army Cost: 2397 pts

What I think:

- Runelord with Anvil and MR of Balance adds 4 dispel dices, it's good thing since there WILL be magic.

- I have never played with Anvil, I'd like to try.

- Ranger Warriors + Miners + Anvil can do quite a mess.

- Lots of points in one model. Anvil WILL be focused. It may be good thing in some cases though.

Build two: PURE DWARF POWER

Runelord - 288 pts

General

Runic Talisman: Master Rune of Balance, Rune of Spellbreaking x2

Runic Armor: Rune of Preservation, Rune of Resistance, Rune of Stone

Thane - 155 pts

Batle Standard

Runic Armor: Master Rune of Gromril, Rune of Preservation, Rune of Resistance

38 Hammerers - 536 pts

Full Command

Runic Banner - Master Rune of Grungni

40 Warriors - 425 pts

Great Weapons, Full Command

40 Warriors - 465 pts

Rangers, Great Weapons, Full Command

Cannon - 125 pts

Rune of Forging

Cannon - 130 pts

Rune of Burning, Rune of Forging

Grudge Thrower - 155 pts

Rune of Accuracy, Rune of Penetrating x2

Organ gun - 120 pts

Total Army Cost - 2399 pts

What I think:

- Moar dorfz = moar powur

- Moar machinez = moar shooty

- Runelord adds 3 dispel dices, one less than earlier but still good.

- Three hordes of 40 is a thing that should be feared.

- Machines have got no Engineers, but I can deploy less Warriors if they will be necessary

- I have read that such an army should have a good general. Well... I don't have much experience, especially with 8th edition.

So, what do you think, fellow (experienced) Dwarven Generals? Is one list significantly better than another? Or both are viable and depend on who will they play against and how?

Your second build is the better army. The first might be fun, but if you're not used to using the Anvil of Doom, even though it sounds like a friendly tournament, it may not be the best place to inaugurate its use. Additionally, on the basis of pure efficient utility, the second army has soundly superior merit. I've used armies very much like it many times, and they've always done quite well.

Cool, thanks for the feedback.

I'll use second list then, I'll just sacrifice 4 Rangers for 3 Engineers and post the results :P

I think you only really need one Engineer. Put him on the Grudge Thrower. Engineers on the Cannons will add a wound and a single S3 attack in close combat, but they don't typically give a good return on the investment.
