In this update, Dwarves see a lot of changes- some of them a whole lot bigger than others and practically all of them nerfs (brace yerselves, lads!). I'll be going through the reasoning for each of these, so that you all gain a better understanding of why it happened. We'll work ourselves from minor changes, to medium changes, to major changes.

[SIZE=12pt]Minor:

"Grim Resolve" renamed "Sturdy"
Grim Resolve was a bit of a mouthful and took a lot of space in the document. It's not the name of a Seeker character rule instead!

“Yer Comin’ With Me…!” Rewritten for clarification
Hopefully, the new wording makes it clear that no matter bonuses, weapon choices or special rules, the dying attack may never be more than one (which goes for Berserkers and Seeker characters aswell).

Rune of Retribution Rewritten for clarification
It's no longer a permanent gain, but rather lasts for one turn... as originally intended :p

Rune of Precision cost increased
It was a bit too cheap for what it did.

Rune of Illusion, cost increased
With Rune of Shielding moving to Talismans, you can create some very tough characters. The cost increase is minor, but will hopefully stave off some of the nastiest builds (more tweaks might come in the future)

Dwarf King, Price of Shield streamlined
Following guidelines for gear set out by the RT. You might not the Smiths don't have the same costs yet- that's because the ABC and RT overlookd it, and will be fixed too.

Warriors, Shooters, Price for shields adjusted
In case you weren't aware, Parry has changed. It's not as potent as it was before, and thus costs have been adjusted. As a rule of thumb... a shield is 1pts, but with shieldwall, it becomes 2pts. If a shield is taken but you can't parry (ie Spears) it's also 1pts.

Palanquin, Added relentless to avoid confusion
It was relentless before aswell since the King granted it the rule, but it's now there for sake of clarity.

Throne of War, removed “War Platform”, added Relentless
War Platform rule actually didn't contribute anything. It had relentless before aswell, but added now also for total clarity.

Steamcopter, Skirmishers Special Rule on units only, not on single models
This was always the original intent, but there was slight miscommunication with the team working on the document. Note that a unit of Steamcopters will always retain skirmish, even if reduced to only 1 model left (while a steamcopter you buy solo wont have it!).

Steamcopter, Flame Blaster, clarification
It can no longer march and shoot, which wasn't the intent in the first place. The ABC did a blunder, thinking March&Shoot still was in the Skirmisher/Fast Cav rules... but it was moved to Free Reform, something all Flyers have.

[SIZE=12pt]Medium:

[SIZE=10pt]Rune of Shielding, moved to talisman section
While the RT originally had said 9th would make combining 1+/2+ armor and 4++ very hard for characters to do, it hasn't been the reality so far and our request to move the ward talismans was met with approval (since a lot of other races can do similar combos).

[SIZE=10pt]Rune of Enfeeblement removed
[SIZE=10pt]This was never used, and was too circumstantial. Its removal gives us room to add a new Rune.

Rune of Grounding Added
Namely, the Rune of Grounding! While Dwarves are good at dispelling with their inherent bonus, they still lacked variety in the anti-magic rune department. The Rune of Grounding will further aid a Dwarf that wants to focus on dispelling, but it does so at the cost of the offensive magic phase.

Rune of Harnessing Reworked
The old Harnessing was a bit too similar to the Brilliance Rune, and was too circumstantial at best. The new Rune is a bit of a hybrid, designed to be viable for both offense and defense minded Dwarflists. Remember that it can be taken in multiples for increased effect!

Daemon Seeker/Dragon Seeker, Price, Stats, Multiple Wounds (2) optional upgrade instead of Impact Hits
Daemon & Dragon Seekers were performing a bit too well for their cost, and have had their MW2 removed. Instead, the impact hits upgrade (which was rarely taken) has been reworked into a MW2 against Monstrous rune (MC, MI, M) so that Seeker characters may still perform their duties as monster killer. The Daemon seeker went down 10pts, and the Dragon Seeker went down 5pts (and gained +1A!) to reflect the loss of their all-around MW2... but they're still very capable single wound killers even without it.

Guild Master/Thane, Price of model and equipment corrected
One of the more hotly argued points between ABC and RT, the Thane has had his base cost increased by 20pts, and GW/Shield cost increased to reflect general character guidelines of 9th Age. While the ABC didn't feel he was broken at any point prior to this, we will respect the guidelines RT has laid out.

Shooters, minimum Unit Size changed
May now be taken in units of 5! More suited for guardian roles, or as tiny bunkers for engineers. Also, makes it easier for a Dwarf player to fill up core requirements!

Ironguard, Price changed
A minor decrease in cost that was suggested when the old parry rules were still in effect. The new parry rules only serve to make the Ironguard even more irrelevant, as high WS/Parry doesn't really matter. We realize that this minor decrease in cost isn't sufficient to make them viable, and we're looking into solutions to make them more of a desirable choice in the light of the new weapon rules.

[SIZE=12pt]Major

Anvil of Power, Shields removed, Range on damage Spells decreased
The Anvil of Power could reach just a little bit too far, and was a bit too tough, for it to be acceptable. WM hunters had big trouble with Anvils hiding in the far opposite corner, especially when it had a 3+ save. It's still tough (maybe too durable yet) and can fight off very light flankers, but the reduced range on its offensive spells means it needs to be placed further up to truly reach.

Steambomber, price, wounds, quantity
Flyer spam was a concern of the RT, and we've added a band-aid fix to this. In the near future the ABC wants to rework the Steambomber entirely, making it a wholly different unit- more of a gunship in truth, perhaps on a chariot base and with more tools for destruction but clocking in at roughly the 200p mark...! We'll see!

Greybeards, BS reduced
BS4 with S4 TWs and no penalties for SnS simply was a bit too strong. The BS3 is lost, but the access to TWs is not.

Core Troops, lost access to Scout/Ambush
This has been one of the biggest headaches for the ABC and RT. It has been a key part of aggressive armies, and they're one of the things we absolutely want Dwarves to be capable of on a competitive level- but on the other hand, having Scouts in Core is immensely powerful and tricky to balance. The vanishing deployment options of scout/ambush means you can choose to not deploy your Core at all.

RT wanted Scout gone from Greybeards entirely, which would only maybe leave Shooters with it (there was a lot of discussion around this aswell). We felt that instead of trying to balance the entire army and potentially cripple it by limiting the scouting too much in Core, we'd get rid of both the rules entirely and instead introduce them through other units outside of Core- but we still had to make sure Core could be a viable part of an aggressive army...

Warriors, Greybeards, Magic Standards and Vanguard
As part of a new change for 9th age, one unit in core (shooters excluded from this for now) may take a 25pts magic banner. This means Warriors also have access to it now! Note that this also means Greybeards lost their old access to unlimited magical banners for 25pts.

What's more, as compensation for losing the old scout/ambush rules, one unit in core (shooters, again, excluded from this for now) may take vanguard. Warriors may be up to 30 and bring it, while Greybeards may be up to 20.

The ABC has fought tooth and nail with the RT to get these changes through after lost scout/ambush, and it was only roughly a day ago after a lot of compromises we got the green light to add this. We know that for aggressive armies to remain viable, core must be able to follow in the advance- and now you can, but through the more limited vanguard. The upside is that now Warriors become a viable option for aggressive armies, and you have more options for warrior/greybeard combos with the new veteran standard rule.

Rangers, Miners, new units
The re-introduction of these two units has long been in the works, but it wasn't until very recently that we got the OK from the RT. There was a lot of discussion back and forth, and just like with the changes to core and vanguard, this took a lot of compromising to get through.

We've started off by introducing them in Rare, but that doesn't mean they are set in stone to remain there. We've decided to take a better safe than sorry approach here, to make sure we get them into the armybook as top priority and then playtest them to further find out how strong they are while not creating another Greybeard-esque problem. Even though Miners used to be special in the 8th book, they're also Rare for now. Some of the major changes that differ these new units from the 8th ones:

Rangers have BS4, and more options for equipping themselves. They've also got Strider: Forests, and access to Skirmish.

Miners are S4, and also have more options for equipment. They've even got pistols to act as a shooting/ahw weapon! Additionally, unlike their 8th counter-parts they can now be fielded in units of 5+, which lets you create cheaper WM hunters.

We hope that the inclusion of these two new units, along with the new rules for banners and vanguards in Core, will let Dwarves create just as competitive aggressive armylists as before, but with a more varied approach. Before, with Scouts in Core, you couldn't choose to just include 1 tiny unit of 5 to act as a vanguard blocker/protector for example... or by doing so you'd waste your only scout slot. With Rangers in rare, you get access to two scouting units, and can be a lot more flexible with how you choose to use your army.

Finally, you might've noticed their GWs cost 3pts. Why is that? Well, it's a new 9th Age guideline that is meant to span all armies- but it arrived so suddenly that we (and other armies) have not yet had time to change it for all of their units and characters yet. In time, all units (and not only Rangers/Miners) will pay as much for that option.

[SIZE=12pt]Summarization:

All in all, Dwarves have received a lot of changes and nerfs. We were one of the top performers in average matches won, and some things needed fixing. The ABC felt that it was better to make the big design change with regards to Core Ambush/Scout now and not later- even though initial reaction might be that we've lost access to competitive armies, I think you'll find that the new formula for how you build them will provide a greater variety and toolbox for just how you wish to approach it.

What's more, a lot of these changes we've been working on the last 2 weeks were made with the old Parry rules. With the changes to Parry, Dwarven Holds received a bit of a doubly whammy nerf, and I think it's safe to say that we've seen a great reduction in pure power.

It will take time to get used to these changes, and also to find out just where we stand in the new 'meta'. Don't get discouraged, lads! We need to keep on playing and testing to make sure things are costed right, with both nerfs and buffs. All feedback is read, and while the ABC doesn't agree with everything, it's definitely greatly appreciated 🙂

I hope this post brings greater insight and understanding behind the changes!
