Highlights: I was able to drop my longbeard rangers right infront of his boar riders on my far right flank. I went first and marched up 6 inches with my rangers, on his turn he failed his leadership to march with me within 8 inches and got killed by a charge turn 2. Also in turn 2, I was able to, after moving my lord with hammerers up the first turn (the deployment zones were 15inches deep on this one) I was able to get off a front charge on his big uns horde that had his fighty hero and bsb in it, combined with a anviled in rear charge from my miners that made the combat winable. As with most 8th edition combats in my experience, casualties on both sides were pretty high, but i won the combat by 5 and he didn't roll a 4 or lower on his 2 triest, so, on round 2 I reduced his fortitude from 7 to 4, and only needed one more point to win. Unfortunately for me, that meant either chasing down some particularly elusive night goblins, or killing Grimgor, for whom I have much more repect after this game). After shooting his unit down to 7 models, a little at a time, I flank charged him with my 25 man warrior unit with my monster killer thane. I managed to put 2 wounds on grimgor the first round, and then get absolutely decimated. After seeing grimgore tear down an entire unit plus a character, I consentrated fire the next round, reduced his unit to 4 models and dropped a rock on his head, ending that game and earning a major victory, 64 points from a massacre.

I was leary going into this game because between magic and shooting, I was very worried that I would picked apart, however; he made a big mistake during deployment. On the far left flank, in the back corner of his diagonal, he had 3 buildings which he placed 3 of his x-bow units, two of which had lvl 4's. This would have been a deadly grinder to have to assualt, but tankfully, my shooting had a longer range. I deployed on my side, with my organ gun as the closest unit, bolstered by the entrenchment from my master engineer. Immdeiately he saw the problem, and as he had first turn, he began unloading troops from the buildings. Unfortunately for him, when you leave a building, that's it for your movement. So all of that fancy elf dexterity was for naught as they had to exit the building single-file. More importantly, this game me one round in which none of his magic was in range. Round 2 he moved up and was able to get in range of my organ gun, but between long range, multi-shot, moving and entrenchment, he needed 8's to hit. So, 48 shots later he had reduced my organ gun to 2 wounds. His spearelves with the terrifying death mage moved away from thier building and much to my delight ended with two models in a forest. So, on my turn two, when I anviled in my miners for a flank charge, they were no longer steadfast. I broke them and chased, we played tag off and on the rest of the game, and the elves ended up being one inch from the table edge when the game ended, due to time, at the bottom of 5. His corsairs, which came on as reserve on turn one charged and failed to kill the top canon in my artillery bank (Thank you engineer upgrade) and got flank charged and run down by my rangers. I was able to shoot one blackguard unit to death and killed the other close combat, although those guys are tough as nails. At the end of the game he had scored 255 victory points from me and I had a little over 1700 from him, adding a second major victory.

Game 3 vs. Dwarves (Battle Line)

This was a lightning fast game, and we finished before most of the other games had hit thier second turn. We each had to start with 2 units off the table. I chose my miners which would now automatically come in on turn 3 and my organ gun. He chose a 10 man thunderer unit and his warriors with gw's. First of all, as other dwarf players I'm sure that you see a few holes in his list. He had way too many points, in my opinion, dedicated to stopping magic, +5 to dispel attempts just doesnt seem that appealing this addittion to me. My Scouts set up to flank one of his smaller units of thunderers on my turn 2, since with the scout rules i had to wait for it. I won first turn and counter artilleried his canons to death first turn and his stone thrower second. After breaking his thunderers, I was behind his army and he kept quick reforming and moving his longbeards with a lord in them to try to line up a charge, but I was able to march move + Anvil march to stay out of his line of sight for 2 turns. In that time, I was able to move up and MRoChallenge his ironbreakers plus a lord and runesmith into my lord, bsb, and hammerers. GW turned out to be definitiviely better than a parry save and I ran them down (Silly slow dwarves 😉 ) His block of warriors came on and spent two round tied up with my anvil, which got through unscathed) and with my whole army unengaged I was able to shoot and fight his other lord into the halls of the ancestors. Massacre for the dwarves (represented in the case by myself.)

At the end of the tournament, I was the only player undefeated and snuck away with first place. This tournament was completely different than my first Ard Boyz experience where I spent the entire time trying to deal with large targets and my lord earned his points back every match (he was much more underwhelming in this setting). The dark elf player that I won against in the second round took 2nd place after 2 massacres and third place was a beastmen player who conceded his first game in a fit of noisy noisy angry rage. I look forward to heading to the next round and seeing what I bump into, I promise to take a camera and do these forums more justice next time. Till then, ale on me.
