I had a recent game at my local club against a relative new guy who had won against me a few weeks back with a borrowed warriors of chaos list (it was my refresher game after 2-3 months of no warhammer due to university pressures - he was making up rules and I was struggling to remember any!). This game was a pick up game so I just pulled out my 1000pt all comers list which I have since reworked slightly:

Thane (GEN): Arjen Stonecleaver, GW, RoStone, Oathstone (96pts)
Thane (BSB): Lothorr Blackhammer, MRoGromril, RoFire (120pts)
Ranger - Quarrellers x 20, Mus, Shields (305pts)
Ironbreakers x 18, FC, RoBattle, RoDetermination (335pts)
Bolt Thrower (45pts)
Organ Gun (120pts)
=1000pts

My opponent still hasn't sent me his army list, so here is a rough guess of units and no clues on point spread:

Warrior (GEN): some hitty sword
Priest (LVL 2 WIZ)
Skinks x 30, Poisoned Javelins, Shields (150pts+)
Saurus x 20, HW & Sh
Salamander + Handlers (75pts?)
Cold One Riders x 8
=1000pts

It was a fortuitous sunrise this fair day. The rangers had scouted out a raiding band of lizardmen lurking on the borders of Karar Nor near one of the Skull River tributaries. Valaya knows what they hoped to achieve this far from their normal stronghold, but Grungni will show them the error of their ways for threatening the trade caravans through the Black Fire Pass. Our commander, Arjen Stonecleaver, one of Lord Balador Silvermane's trusted thanes, had ordered our small throng to take up a position near the Stone of Bohan, with the crew of "Grimklinka" our most trusted mobile bolt thrower holding the left flank obscured by a copse of trees. The rest of the throng took positions around a medium sized hill, the "Blackwatch" rangers spread 10 wide and 2 ranks deep on the the brow of the hill, with the organ gun ("Baragdum") to their left and 18 ironbreakers on their right along with Arjen and the regiment battle standard bearer, Lothorr Blackhammer. The Ironbreakers were 5 wide and 4 ranks deep, hoping that whatever the lizards threw at them their gromril armour would protect them long enough to strike down all those they opposed.

When the lizards broke through the forest, Arjen could see the rangers had reported true that there was both a shaman in their midst as well as a bloodthirsty looking warrior, not to mention a strong unit of mounted lizard riders, a tough looking unit of saurus, a salamander, and a horde of skinks with green tipped javelins. The shaman looked out confidently from the skinks, while the lizard warrior bellowed out orders to his troops from amidst the saurus. The crew of the "Grimklinka" and the rangers got the jump on the lizards shooting their bolts at the saurus but failing to do any significant damage - perhaps slaying 1 or 2 in the unit with crossbow quarrels. The crew of the "Baragdum" realised they would be out of sight of the lizard riders when they advanced, repositioned their Warmachine of Doom further forward.

In response the lizards all moved forward in the hope of soon charging our lines, the lizard shaman then began to gibber and jabber as the air around him seemed to swirl and coalesce presumably gathering the fowl winds of magic. Little did the throng realise, he'd irresistibly cast the Comet of Casandora right in front of the rangers, not far from the ironbreakers - the throng was to busy laughing as the shaman calamitously detonated both himself and a few other skinks leaving smoldering blue remains behind - it was only Arjen, Lothorr and the Ironbeard, Kalic Stonebreaker, that had an inkling what the shaman had set in motion. Whether spooked by the shaman exploding and raining body parts over them or simply overzealous from bloodlust, the salamander and it's handlers missed the distant rangers as the gout of flame fell short, Valaya be praised!

The rangers sixth sense alerted them to the impending doom heading their way but were too far away to charge anything so opted to keep shooting at the saurus unit with the general and trust in Valaya for protection. The comet grew as it kept descending to its destructive culmination - the rangers nerves got the better of them as the dark shadow loomed over their position and missed most of their shots on the saurus, possibly killing 2 or 3. Conversely, the crew of the "Baragdum" seeing the whites of the eyes of the saurus and their maniacal leader, opened up firing 8 shots killing approximately 5 saurus who, perhaps due to the haze and confusion of the battle, didn't even think about panicking. The crew of the "Grimklinka" couldn't get line of sight on anything in range due to the lizards cowardly hiding in line with the great rock feature - the Stone of Bohan. In the meantime, Arjen, Lothorr, and the ironbreakers had sprinted across the battlefield and charged the lizard riders killing two - one to Arjen's great axe and one to venerable Kalic Stonebreaker. Four stalwart ironbreakers fell but not before causing the lizards to break from combat and flee. Unfortunately, the ironbreakers were exhausted from the charge and ensuing combat so only stumbled forward when Arjen ordered them to pursue. Arjen was actually surprised the lizard riders had not actually scattered for good because they should have made contact with the cliff overlooking the Skull River tributary which bordered the battlefield - perplexed but unfazed, Arjen ordered his retinue to steel themselves for another charge once they caught their breath.

The lizard riders rallied and reformed to face the bristling ironbreakers and their resolute thanes. The saurus, aggrieved at losing some of their number already, marched forward ready to charge the rangers on the hill next, the skinks however, wheeled laterally toward the ironbreakers hoping to hurl their poisoned javelins at this now established threat. The Salamander and it's handlers moved forward and blasted the now free ironbreakers. At that moment the comet crashed to earth killing only one of the saurus and wounding the general even though the entire unit had been completely caught in it's fiery radius - their god must have been smiling on them. Conversely, 12 stalwart rangers were torn apart by the resulting fiery impact and shockwave - curse lizard magic!!! Thankfully the remaining rangers regathered their wits and maintained their position on the hill - safe in the knowledge there would be no more scurrilous magic on the battlefield. The organ gun and an ironbreaker who'd been in range were unharmed in the blast. Perhaps due to the seismic shockwave from the comet, the salamander somehow completely overshot the ironbreakers with its flaming breath weapon.

Having escaped fiery immolation twice the ironbreakers hurled themselves at the lizard riders (who chose to hold or face oblivion off the cliff behind them), crashing into them with bloodied axes and hammers swinging. The crew of the "Grimklinka" took a shot at the lizard warrior general who was perfectly lined up with the front rank of saurus, hitting him perfectly only to have the bolt glance off the general without even scratching him, curse the lizard gods!!! The bad luck didn't stop there, as the "Baragdum" was lined up on the same unit one of the crew inadvertently spilled his ale on the fuses causing it to go 'fzzz-clunk' - thankfully most of the ale was salvageable and they quickly replaced the fuses with dry ones. The rangers loaded and fired their crossbows at the saurus, possibly killing 1-2. Arjen, Lothorr, and their retinue again lost numbers (maybe 3-4) as they hacked down 5 lizard riders mercilessly, leaving just one remaining rider who understandably broke and fled, tumbling off the cliff into the river below. After an almighty cheer from the ironbreakers, Arjen quickly ordered them to about face to confront the approaching threat of the redirected skinks and to threaten the salamander and it's handlers.

Perhaps in response to the agitated jabs of the handlers, the salamander ignored the threatening ironbreakers in front of it and turned and had lizard takeaways instead, eating two of the handlers in quick succession, leaving the remaining handler shaking like a leaf. The saurus general seeing his well laid plans falling apart around him screamed for his saurus to charge the rangers on the hill only to see the rangers opt to tactically withdraw over the hill. Perhaps because the general was green (in experience not scaley skin colour!) the saurus did not re-direct toward the crew of "Baragdum" so just staggered forward somewhat before pulling up. The skinks launched a salvo of poisoned javelins at the victorious ironbreakers miraculously killing around 3-4, somehow breaching their normally impenetrable gromril armour and shields. Lady luck is fickle indeed!

With their numbers down to about 8-9, Arjen thought it prudent to charge the salamander and handler rather than the more distant horde of skinks. The handler fearing his doom chose to flee the charge and run through the corner of the saurus unit toward the "Baragdum" position. Arjen and his troops failed to catch the salamander but jogged forward a short distance toward the saurus. The rangers rallied and reformed back toward the hill and saurus lurking on the other side. The "Grimklinka" was again unsuccessful in shooting the saurus unit, but the "Baragdum" having recovered from the previous misfire fired 6 shots felling 3-4.

The skinks shuffled back a little and unleashed another salvo, this one resulting in all javelins bouncing off gromril armour or being parried by shield. The saurus swift reformed to face the threat of the ironbreakers (hereby to be nicknamed "Arjen's Heartbreakers" after this battle) and move toward them. The salamander and it's demoralized handler failed to rally and fled just short and to one side of the crew of the "Baragdum".

Arjen declared a charge on the general and his saurus sensing the skinks too distant to risk a failed charge and unconfident about the match up of 8-9 vs. a horde of 26-28 anyway. Ironically, they could not even charge the saurus, only managing an embarassing few steps and leaving them vulnerable to a duel charge if the rest of his throng were unsuccessful in dealing with the saurus. Again the crew of the "Grimklinka" fired on the saurus, hoping to pick off the general who was easily spotted in the last rank of the saurus unit, but again failed to hit anything. The crew of the "Baragdum" and the rangers both ignored the fleeing salamander, hoping it would keep running, and after the sweat and smoke cleared had killed the last remaining 5 saurus! The lizard general finally lost his nerve and fled toward the ironbreakers just pulling up short - Curses!

The skinks threw all caution to the wind and easily charged into the flank of the ironbreaker unit. Perhaps as a portent to come, the general failed to rally and fled through the ironbreakers running straight into a swinging axe which sliced through his still comet-softened scaley skin and armour - guess the lizard gods were tired of his incompetence to have cursed his luck so. The ironbreakers lost 1-3 and fluffed their attacks resulting in losing combat (by 2) despite their rune of battle and the regimental battle standard. Thankfully, the rune of determination on their unit standard allowed them to "automatically" pass their break test and they held and reformed to face the skinks. Meanwhile, the salamander perhaps following the general's lead or perhaps to keep working off his lizard burger lunch kept on running all the way off the battlefield. "Fetch boy, fetch!!!"

The rangers retook the hill to overlook the milieu in the battlefield expanse eyeing up a possible flank charge into the skinks below - it would be a long shot. The crew of "Grimklinka" grumbled about whether Borri (the targeting engineer) needed more ale as they had failed to wound anything all battle and now were completely redundant with no targets - oh well, time for an ale! The crew of the "Baragdum" started to put bets on which of their comrades in the ironbreakers would kill the most skinks as they also had no viable targets. It was this round of combat that the everybody realised just how pathetic the skinks were at close combat failing to kill anything while Arjen, Lothorr and the remaining 5-6 ironbreakers mercilessly hacked down about 6-7 skinks. The skinks were steadfast so continued to poke their feeble weapons at Arjen and his retinue.

The last round or two of combat saw a challenge from the skink champion which was easily won by Arjen, then a snake-eyed break-test save from the skinks after losing by a gazillion and (I think in turn 7? Oops!) the victorious ironbreakers hack down the horde of skinks to the very last lizard on the very last roll of the dice. The rangers had failed their charge in the hope of joining the fray.

The crew of the "Baragdum" were given a barrel of ale for their efforts while Borri was given three to improve his aim. The highest honour of all went to the "Heartbreakers" who routed both the lizard riders and salamander, "slew" the general, and wiped out the skinks to the last lizard. Arjen ordered his stalwart dawi to tend to the badly burned rangers and injured ironbreakers and to get ready to travel so that they could get back to Karak Nor as soon as possible with the wounded and to report the obliteration of the scaled ones. Arjen Stonecleaver wondered what praises his Lord, Balador Silvemane, would bestow upon him for his victory upon the battlefield, Arjen lost himself in thoughts of gold and runic weapons.

P.S. Sorry for the size of the diagrams, I am still learning how to store images online and then post them on here - in the end I just copied image location form my fledgling warhammer blog - just not sure how to increase the image size yet.
