The tale i bring today is a sad one. The mighty stalwart dwarves failed to contain the threat of the Daemons of Chaos. I'll spare you the gory details, and just give you the highlights.

Dwarves go first. (Things are looking up for our heroes at this point; at least two rounds of shooting before close combat.)

First Round Shooting commences;
Grudge Thrower-Misfire, reroll Misfire, cannot fire this turn or next.
Grudge Thrower 2- Misfire, explodes.
Cannon- Misfire, reroll misfire, cannot fire this turn.
Cannon 2- Hit, slaughters demon "innocents" with a "look out sir".

Round 2 of shooting;
Grudge Thrower 1-still on timeout
Cannon- Misfire, reroll misfire; cannot fire this turn.
Cannon 2- Kills a few demonic peons, "Look out sir" having succeeded.
Orgun Gun-Misfire, cannot fire this turn or next.

Round three- Arrival of Demons
Organ gun-destroyed having accomplished absolutely nothing.
Grudge Thrower 1- Hit, destroyed Demon Herald of Khorne (BSB).
Cannon 1-Hit, plows a line through unexpecting demons.
Cannon 2-Misfire, reroll misfire. Cannot fire this turn.
Ironbreakers and troops engage demons.

Round Four-
Grudge Thrower- No target, all demons are in combat or too close.
Cannon 1-Success
Cannon 2-Success ; Demonic Spell caster (Kairos Fateweaver) slain.
Dwarves fail a Leadership 10 test, with a roll of 11; reroll with a 12. Over 800 points of dwarves flee till they are off the board, never rallying.

Round Five-
Grudge Thrower and Cannons finish all Demonic special characters.
What little is left of the dwarves is wiped out.

Results: While many MANY dwarves lived through the battle (by fleeing), they will never be able to bear the shame of cowardice. The Slayers can expect a mass influx. Also, the Master Engineer in charge of upkeep of war machines was fired.

Fluff battle: My first attempt at trying to turn a battle into Fluff.

(Note The king featured in this story so disgraced himself and his kin, that his name was stricken from dwarven history. This is the story of how the Forgotten king, who shall remain nameless, shamed the dwarves.)
King Something the Forgotten surveyed his army, knowing that Chaos would soon appear over the horizon. The scouts had informed him that this particular demon horde held no sky sharks nor flame throwing monsters. "Phaw, this should be an easy victory." thought the king. The battle would take place on the Plains of Zharr, where there were virtually no obstructions or landmarks of any kind. The perfect place for an ambush with war machines, nothing to obstruct one's view. That was his plan anyway, to bombard the enemy with war machines, then clean-up what was left in close combat with good honest steel.

King Something the Forgotten's final inspection led him past many brave warriors with great axes and hammers, by the elite ironbreakers (where the king himself would be), and finally past the old grumblers. Everything looked to be in order and ready...except, what was happening with the Master Engineer over near the war machines? The crews seemed to be arguing with the Master Engineer, which, quite frankly, was rediculous. Not only did the master engineer have a longer beard, more experience, and a history from here to the realm of chaos; he was a master of his craft certified by the Engineer's guild. King Something went to investigate.

Grudge Thrower 1 Crew- "But, Sir, that doesn't make any sense!"
Master Engineer Granak : "Of course it make sense, short ugly bearded one, if you saw the support beams mostly through, you get more range!", "And you, other ugly bearded one, why you not cut chain like i told you?"
King Something -" What's going on here?"
War Machine crew- " Oh, thank goodness you're here! Master Engineer Anval ...er... i mean Master Engineer Granak (a name which the master engineer had only recently taken to calling himself...about the same time he began to speak with a strange accent, walk strangely, grew a foot or two and look a little off...especially the almost greenish hue to his skin) is ordering us to all but destroy our war machines! Please sire, make him see reason."
King Something-" Well Granak? i've gotten countless reports in the last few days about you...everyone saying you're acting suspicous, or are otherwise suspicious in this manner or that. What do you have to say for yourself?"
Master Engineer Granak : " Me say, that if you want win...you listen to me. Me have long face hair see, and is Master of shooting stuff and stuff. These all be new, best ways to make work better."
Granak seemed to be nervous, and had a hand place on his ugly, orcish looking axe.
King Something- exhales deeply, Arms crossed and looking down, he begins to tap on his arm with a finger; clearly deep in thought. After several seconds he responds. " Do it..whatever he asks. He has the longest beard of anyone here; and a history of successful encounters with the orcs. Just last week he was captured by an orcish raiding party and managed to single handedly escape. He is someone who we can put our complete faith in!"
Master Engineer Granak :" wha...really? i mean, yes, yes, me smart, have long face hair, you do what i say beardlings! We have lot of work to do!"
Unfortunatly, dwarven loyalty won the day, and though it was counter intuitive to them, the war machine crews obeyed.
King Something, having successfully resolved the conflict returned to his platoon of ironbreakers to await the demons. He didn't have to wait long.
Demons began to line up on the Horizon, first one group of ugly bastards, then another; until finally there was a whole army of them. It seemed there was an ugly two headed bird leading them.
A tinge of fear crept in the kings heart at this moment, sad, but true. He thus acted in haste, instead of waiting for themselves to present better targets.
King Something- " Fire, Fire now!"
Crack, SMASH! The first grudge thrower, whose beam had been sawed nearly in half by this point, collapsed in a great heap, killing all the dwarves around and under it.
BOOM The Organ gun exploded, leaving a cloud of black smoke and the stench of burnt beards. The crew of which, were now all pinholed with shrapnel.
NRRR Clunk The second grudge thrower's chain snapped...it would take a while to fix such mishap.
Fzzz...Clunk The gunpower used in the cannon failed to ignite.
Boom The second cannon successfully fired, though it missed it's target and just killed a few lesser demons.

King Something- "What...What's going on here?!? All my warmachines...this is too much to be coincidence, it must be sabotage! But who...and when? Master Engineer Granak has been watching those machines at nights personally!" Sadly, the king never did figure it out. The war machine crews and rest of the army did however, especially when they saw the master engineer pull off his dwarf costume as he was fleeing from the coming battle. '

Needless to say, after such acts of sabotage the shooting that the king had so hoped on was a hopeless failure. It was time now to engage the demons in Mortal Kombat!

King Something-" I Challenge you, fool demon, face me if you dare" said the king, as a rock from an apparently now at least partially working grudge thrower flew over his head, killing one of the scarier daemons.

The Daemon stepped up to face the challenge. Claw, scratch and bite the demon could not get through the king's armor. Now it was time to repay said demon for it's foolish attempts at injury. The Dwarf King hefted his mighty axe and swung...and swung...and swung...and swung. The King apparently needed more practice as he missed with all of his swings. His shieldbearers however did manage to kick the daemon in the...well on any mortal... would be the testicular region, but as it was a daemon this was ineffective.
Looking to his left and right, the king realized that one of his ironbreakers had died. Only one, it wasn't an Ironbeard or a standard bearer...just an ironbreaker. This however was enough to break the king's resolve.
King Something-" Retreat! Run, Run for your lives! There is no hope!" he screamed as he began to flee. The Ironbreakers, being the loyal lot that they were, accompanied the king, bravely taking to defeat, they made a very brave retreat.
The rest of the army, however, had decided to ignore the fool king by this point. They foguht tooth and nail, to the very last man. The Cannoneers, now knew thier duty. They had finally managed to fix the cannons, and the giant two headed bird monster was still alive. Even knowing that staying would mean their inevitable demise, they were dwarves and determined to halt Chaos. Before they went down, they managed to give the bird daemon two cannon balls to the gut, splitting him in half.

Even with all the fiascos, many daemons died that day thanks to the bravery of the Stalwart Clansmen who gave their lives to halt the progression of Chaos. Not but a handful of Daemons walked off the field. Even with all of the Artillery mishaps, had the king and his Ironbreakers stayed to fight, there's a good chance it would've been a Dwarven Victory. This is why his name has been stricken from Dwarven history. His fate after he fled from battle is unknown, however if he lived, he likely would have then had an orange streek to his hair.
