Onggor Throng vs. Duke le Hricak

Overview

Scenario: Battleline
Location: Bratislava - Mad Maxon
Date played: 24. júla 2011

Dawi against Brettonnia 2000 Pts.

Dawi of the Onggor Throng met in friendly manouvers with sons of Brettonia to test both sides battle-worthiness.
Catapults loaded marshmallows, beer casks were prepared on the edges of battlefield and the battle could commence.

(We always play friendlies, so our warriors never hit each other realy, it is just a big "iron" and marshmallow battle.
Our models go probably with the fluff as more often then not we have a group or two who just can not hit anyone.
Most esteemed success of this policy is 5 Errant knights and 10 thunderers to fight in CC for 4 combat rounds,
with a loss of a single thunderer. -was probably thirsty and went for some beer.)

Terrain Notes:
The Altar in the south is Dwarf Brewery, actualy, played as a difficult ground. Rocky outcrop to the west is impassable terrain.

Deployment:

Dawi:
Dawi: GW warriors on a hill (horde formation) + GT on the same hil;
First cannon - hammerers (deep formation) -second cannon
Quarrellers in a building.
I deployed tight to have the full possible use of the Grungni bubble as I know how lucky he gets with his trebs.

Brettonnia:
9 Errants with the banner of discipline
Trebuchet-Bowmen-Trebuchet
9 Knight of the realm + General, BSB, 4 lvl life
12 Errants + Bohemund (Paladin) and lvl 4 Heavens

Turn 1 - Onggor Throng

Dawi did not charge this turn. Warriors shifted 2" forwards.
Hammerers moved a bit, still keeping nearly everyone in the Grungni buble. (Outside of the poor Thrund).

Shooting
First cannon takes aim and hits trebuchet. I rolled 1 to wound.
Second cannon takes aim and hits another trebuchet. I rolled 1 to wound. (And no, this is not a mistake in copy/paste.)
Catapult scaters and kills one bowman.

Great.

Turn 1 - Duke le Hricak

No Brettonnian charges. Realy! (After standing up from their prayer they jumped/were lifted to the saddle and set a slow pace. Bowmen improved their position and tried to hit some hammerers. Hit one, wounded none. (Magic phase= low roll and MRoBalance, any questions? Just the throne of vines went through.)

Trebuchet 1: Scatter from hammerers into GW warriors. Killed 9.
Trebuchet 2: Direct hit. 8 dead.
MRoGrungni saved like 8-9 dawi this turn. Already cost paid.

A nice turn behind us.

Turn 2 - Onggor Throng

In preparation for the CC hammerers shufle 2" forward to be close to the brewery. They are now safely within 6" and are unbreakable.
GW shuffle little bit forward and stay exactly 0,5" out of 6" from brewery. No machination from me here, just forgot to move them enough. (The hill was steep and I had to do a lot to keep GW from falling.)

In the magic phase Kargan Thrundson waves his hand and irresistibly dispells the Throne of Vines.

First cannon shoots and hits trebuchet. Good. Roll to wound: 4. How many wounds? 1!
Second cannon hits 4 knights errant. (Look out sir for sorcerress and Bohemund made). After ward saves 1 down.
GT scatters into nowhere. Like 8" from the knights.

Quarrellers finish 3 knights errant. /He rolled only 1 6 for ward and only one armour save.../

Dawi stoicly prepared for the incomming cavalry charge.

Quarrellers hit 4 knights. Wound 3. 2 fall over!

Turn 2 - Duke le Hricak

The Brettonnian general has surveyed the field. His army was nearly intact and dwarfs had already suffered some good casualties. As he knew about dwarven fighting proves, he was not willing to comit his knights lightly. Hammer wielding royal guard in front of him did not looked liked wavering. Not at all. Then a totaly Unknightly thought occured to him. His trebuchets are fine, his knights have suffered only few casualties so far, so why not...

Knight errants on the right brettonnian flank declared charge on the GW warriors still on hill (and 0,5" outside of the unbreakable brewery bubble). We resolved the charge and impetuous young knights made it without any problems (rolled like 5,5,2). No other brettonnian charges this turn. All remaining knight units just manouvred a bit. /We forgot to make the errant restrain test, but with the BSB in range.../

His life wizard then tried to cast regrowth with a power stone. /he rolled quite well for winds/. I dispelled it. Then came the iceshard blizzard on the second cannon and I let it through, because he rolled like 10 for cast + 4 for the lvl. It was a mistake, I should have dispelled it. He then promtly rolled the Bigger comet of cassandora with IF. (Miscast was just a S6 hit for every caster...) I was left with 6-7 dispell dice and comet in the middle of my lines (great, what?).

Then he procceded with his shooting phase, where bowmen shot one hammerer and one trebuchet hit hammerers directly (2nd hit out of three shots)- 11 hammerers went down.
His second trebuchet has rolled a misfire (and a HIT 3/4). It will be out for one more turn. Phew.

Combat. Brettonnians are full of themselves and roll a bit poorly for hit. Then they have only S5 (The have the standard of discipline), so they do incapacitate only 1 GW dwarf. Dwarfs in a horde formation roll quite nicely. They get 5 knights down(first time he rolled realy poor for something). Knights break from combat and i make a new record in pursuit as I roll snake eyes!

Turn 3 - Onggor Throng

Kargan Thrundson was one very unhappy dwarf. He could try to charge the enemy and maybe he could succede (14" charge), Grungni willing or he could just manouvre and prepare a trap for the enemy...

GW warriors declared charge on errants to send them fleeing /and maybe panicing one treb/. As we are natural sprinters, we rolled 3,2. Brettonnians fled 9".

Hammerers just improved their position. Maybe I should have charged, but the trap looked quite reasonable to me. I was 10" from comet and had still 17 hammerers left. He had to charge next turn as all my machines were functional and the dice could start turning anytime soon.

Then came my magic phase. Comet went down -S6. Diameter 10". Nice. 3 GT crew, 1+2 cannon crew and 5 quarrellers AND 8 hammerers later I was one very unhappy dwarf. /We played MRoGrungni in such a way that it did not protect against comet as it is direct damage - so no missile. Was it correct?/

My cannon shot at his functional treb. Hit. Roll to wound. Ahem... It was 1. So a third one to wound a trebuchet!
My second cannon did not shoot because I did not roll 4+, so dawi could see nothing through the local iceshard blizzard.
My GT rolled a hit on his Knight of the realm unit! And a misfire. I rolled 3, which would mean the end of it (1 crew dwarf left), so re-rolled and got 1, so Ka Booom!

Quarrellers got 1 more knight down from his left errants. (Probably loaded armour piercing marshmallows.)

Turn 3 - Duke le Hricak

It was time. Tristan de Jouergave the order: "CHARGE!" 2 knightly lances, still strong in number and spirit charged those little ones! After the dust settles, there will be nothing! They stay no chance against the cream and flower of Brettonnia!

He charges my hammerers with both units and makes the charge with both. He also rallies the fleeing 3 Errants on his right flank. He also rolls no casualty on the dangerous terrain test...

In the magic phase he rolls an IF Regrowth. He restores 2 Knights errants and gets the S10 template. Sorceress gets a wound and it blasts 3 knights of the realm to their lady!

His trebuchet rolls a HIT (4/5 in the game) and he incapacitates 8 clandwarfs with GWs.
His bowmen shoot down one of the two remaining crewdwarfs at cannon 2.

Brettonnian general challenges and Gate keeper accepts. At first it looks like the umgi would miss, but then he explains he has the re-roll everything in challenge virtue and makes 2 wounds on the poor Gate keeper.
Charging knights of the realm. BSB and their flesh eating horse incapacitate 4 more dawi. There are only 4 hammerers left. We strike back, hit 3, wound 3 and he saves all 3. His Errant unit and re-roll everything Bohemund de Baston can do NOTHING to my BSB and Runelord /I placed them in such a way he could not strike hammerers.../. Grundi Olaffsson (BSB) then unhorses one knight errant!

Resolution is not important as dawi would never give up a brewery, or?

Turn 4 - Onggor Throng

Kargan Thrundson braced himself and then swung his hammer. He had to hold just a bit longer and then his brothers would come to his aid. He was very happy this is only an excercise, as in reality to loose so many of the hammerers would be a tragedy. He had to show those umgi how a daw can fight! Grundi Olaffsson on his left was undouted and was hitting umgi with the force of his hammer. They will hold! They wer only a few, but they were DAWI!

I reformed my GWs. and as I passed the leadership (BSB re-roll) I moved 3" towards fight. A nice flank charge in sight for the turn 5. I reached the unbreakable bubble, so there was no problem what so ever. Quarrellers moved out of the building, prepared for combat. Cannons planed to try for those Trebs as to avoid my supporting GW unit be "peppered" by these.
My Brettonnian opponent was full of pride and boasting as how he would squiish my poor remaining dawi. I was not so sure, as I would have needed a very bad luck NOT to charge him next turn and he would have needed LOADS of luck to vanquish the whole hammerer unit even when composed only of 4 hammerers and Runelord and BSB. Those armour tanky saves are realy NICE, I have to tell you.

Just then Kargan got an encrypted runic message reminding him to pick up his younger (2 years old) son from his mother in law. (The older (3years old) was stealing my dice from me all the game. I have to count the dice yet.

My opponent is a fine chap, but my dawi turn 2 took 7 minutes. He could not get through the magic phase in his turn 2 in 10 minutes. So it simply took too much time. A pity, as I would have loved to see if Grimnir and Grungni would favour hammerers and my flank charges would hit umgi hard then in my round 5. AS the game ended when it ended, it is a minor victory for Brettonnia.
