Deployment

With the terrain placement I tried to force him to make a two pronged attack with the terrain placing, which he oblidged happily.

Then tried to outdeploy him by taking rangers to the eastern part of the board and hoping to get him into placing an important unit opposite to them. He was too clever for that, so I commited my line in a safest way possible, making one important placement mistake.

He had no magic - funny, how many people try this against dawi. So used most of his points for his chaos knight juggernaut of supreme destruction. First time in my life I was thinking like: "Why do I not have the anvil?"
But back to Kargan.

Kargan got weary of all this. As soon as he finished off that thaggoraki invasion of Karak Angkol he got summons from his lord Targ Ironfist rik a Onggor Throng to head north-east and stop a marauding chaos warrior army. He was one weary dawi. But duty calls and so he went. There will be reconning in blood for the fell deeds of chaos.

And indeed, he met them. He was not surprised, not at all, when he heard from his rangers about the approaching host of the fell ones. He was unphased even when he heard of the mighty riding host of the fell ones, he was a dawi and his rik ordered him to defend clan land. There was no other choice then to position themselves in the path of chaos.

Kargan looked at the assembling enemy and sent runners with simple orders: "Form the steel line of dawi, to repell the fell ones!"
He took the command of his hammerers and sent Grundi to take the lead of the warrior regiment. Rangers had no forward role against this horde, so he just positioned them to strengthen the line.

Turn 1 - Chaos Tzeentch host

Fell warriors of chaos surged forward. They were chanting the terrible name of Tzeentch, the Changer. War altars dragged behind the knights were caked in blood and gore of happles umgi being slaughtered to bestove dark blessings on these. Hounds of chaos howled and sprinted to engage dawi fast. The warriors trunged forward in one big combat block.

Kargan was extatic. So many nice concentrated targets for his artilery. Perfect!
He sent runners to barags. When he looked up, he saw a magical shield forming around the knight unit. "That will be some chaos trickery!", he thought. Stil, he was dawi and he will not allow chaos to infest his clan lands. Enough of Karaz Ankor had fallen to the enemies of dawi, to Urk, Grobbi and Thaggoraki and also to these vile umgi. Now they will pay!

After a zillion re-rolls he rolled what he wanted - e.g. Ld+1 and 4+ward save (improved to 3+ because of tzeentch, of course).
With no mages eating up his points this meant 18 chaos knights and 3 exalted champions had a nice 3+ ward save. There was no anvil to slow them down. Argh!

Turn 1 - Onggor Throng

Kargan prepared the Onggor Throng dawi line to meet the deadly assault of chaos. He himself advanced towards the knith unit at the front of his Rikkin Grund Hammerers.
Now was the time to let barags speak!
Zharrthrund and Dronbarag went their ire on the big chaos warrior block felling many a dark one.
Barag ong and Barag tuk went for the knights. The evil magic shield flickered with a blue-pink energy and only one knight fell to his doom.

By the way I needed to roll only 2+ to be able to go first. I rolled promptly 1, of course!
This was the game where OGs showed how terrifying they are. 13 dead chaos warriors of tzeentch later my opponent lost some of his smuggness.
I rolled promptly a 1 to wound his right chaos war shrine and he rolled all but one ward saves for his knights. So a bit of his smuggness returned.

Turn 2 - Chaos Tzeentch host

Kargan has looked upon the menacing magical barrier surroundning the vile knight unit and sent a quick prayer to Valaya to deliver their children safely through this avalanche. Vile ones came closer. He could see their steeds slowly hitting the stride and changing from canter to trott and then to full galop. They will hit his dawi soon.

No big surprises. Chaos simply marched towards my dawi, willing to obliterate us in CC. He was still shaken by the death of nearly two fifths of his chaos warriors, but kept to his plan of steamrolling over me. He exchanged the +1LD for +1 attack.

Turn 2 - Onggor Throng

Kargan watched the approaching host. Dawi units were moving as a precise clockwork machine, each unit knowing what was their role. Azul grund engaged chaos hounds and Grundi was marching with his warriors towards the bellowing foot warriors and enemy´s warlord. Karazin simply advanced in his stead to cover his flank. He ordered the Rikkin Grund to change formation and slowly march towards the enemy. here he stood and he will defy the vile ones with the unit of his liege´s elite guard. They wll stand as an unmoving cliff in the sea of chaos!

Howls to the left have torn him from his revelrie. A quick blink has shown him Azul grund reforming towards the enemy, chaos dogs all slaughtered.
As he saw it a voley of barag fire has erupted all around him. He saw some vile footsoldiers to fall in mangled heaps and only one of the mounted ones to fall. Again the magical barrier has protected vile riders from their doom. Thunder of their hooves shook the earth...

Organ guns felled another 8 chaos warriors. It looked I am unable to roll anything worse than a 6. (10s and 8s being predominant).
He on the other side has failed his BSB look out sir, just to promtly ward him. and proceeded to ward another 4 knights. i got only one down. Realy frustrating. A 3+ ward save is good, but he already saved like 12/14 knights with it, the BSB on top.

Turn 3 - Chaos Tzeentch host

Kargan shouted encouragements to his troops. "By Grugni, brace!", he ended his speach as the vile ones were close to reaching them. Riders thundered into his troops and everything became a maelstrom of death. Wicked redish blades cut down his warriors and a Red mostrosity has bellowed its challenge. He stepped out and met it. A flurry of fast blows met hes resolve. First cut went through his leg and was followed by four others. His armour fought the wicked weapon, but the last hit to the helmet was too much and he fell to the ground.

Snorri Hurlufsson was inside of a maelstrom of death. Great keys entrusted to him by his liege, rik Targ Ironfist, dangled from his belt and he swung his hammer like a maniac. He must not fail! Chaos blades cut his fellow hammerers around him like weeds.
"Grimniiir!", he shouted at the top of his lungs and swung his hammer at the rider holding a huge blood dripping banner. Perhaps has Grimnir blessed his strike, or he was lucky, but he hit the vile umgi and shattered his knee. The rider nearly went to his death as fellow hammerers struck him, but the blueish shield came into life again and the rider was saved. He limped to the side. Snorri was willing to surge ahead, but then he heard a pircing scream and then evil laughter. His gaze was drawn to the sound and to his horror he saw the Rhunrik Kargan lie bleeding on the ground.
"Save Rhunrik!" he shouted the order. His grundin surged forward and threw themselves at vile ones. But the evil barrier protected them. Nonetheless they bought him time. Snorri gathered few hammerers around him and they took their beloved rhunrik and retreated. He was the only one, who could decipher the secret of the fell barrier of the vile ones. Rhunrik had to be preserved. First time in their carrier were his Grundin beating a hasty retreat. Snorri did not turn back. He heard Furkil, the banner bearer to shout encouragement to the rest of the grundin, who were delaying the enemy. He will remember all of their names and will write them in his own blood into the holds Dammaz Kron. They will be remembered. They will be avenged!

Grundi saw the grundin banner fall and heard vile umgi riders bellowing cries. "I am now in command.", he thought. That was the last think he had time to think about. Footsoldiers of the enemy hurled themselves towards his line.
Holding the hold banner straight, he swung with his fiery hammer and threw himself into the fray.
He heard Rhodri accepting the challenge of the madened umgi thing leading the enemy. And was cut before he could swing his axe.
Dawi swung back and few dark ones fell, their helmeted heads split by mighty dawi axes...

Rolling 11 and 10 for a break test on stubborn hammerers is not a very good thing. Loosing 1/3 of your army to it is also very bad, but my mistake.

Knights did not pursue, they were willing/needing to kill more. And I rolled some solid number, so even deducting one for the flee roll meant I was off the table.

Turn 3 - Onggor Throng

Grundi was fighting for his life. He never met such a tough enemy. Not even orcs could muster such sheer speed, strenght and armour. The enemy lord with the disturbingly woman voice has carved up dawi like there was no tomorrow. Tungri, the Keeper of the Northern gate, has accepted the vile lords challenge and was cut to ribbons before he could swing his mighty hammer. The thing just cacled maniacaly and kept cutting Tungri into smaller pieces. Dawi were so outraged, they felled another few of the vile lords retinue.
Grundi sensed a small weakening of the enemy´s resolve. No is the time to act, he thought! Slowly he pushed trough the press of bodies, pushing vile ones away. He will confront their leader.
He heard the booming of barags to his right and hoped they have more succes this time.

Chaos warrior block was going not to last. Slowly were my dawi killing the vile chaos warriors and there neared a moment where I will earn those 1200+ points for the block and lord. Only thing remained to be solved: How to stop those freakingly hard to kill knights?

All machines fired at the knight unit. 9 Knights hit by cannons. BSB failed LoS again.
Nine 3+ ward saves later I was one VERY unhappy dawi.
OGs - one misfired and would not shoot, the other wounded 5 knights. All saved.

As a bonus, my rangers overrun 3 inches. So the knight unit would see them and nearly certainly charge and anihilate them...

Turn 4 - Chaos Tzeentch host

Grundi heard the cacling challenge. He was nearly there so shouted:"Vile one, you will not despoil dawi soil anymore!" And battered a chaos footsoldier away. There he stood and saw. &s lithe figure covered in gore from tip to toe. It lounged straight at him, he had barely time ro parry. As the deadly blade struck his chest he felt a tingling as the Master rune of Gromril deflected the deadly blow. As more hits connected to his armour, the runes glowed more and more brightly.
"Grungni!" and "The Smith!", those were shouts, which were to be heard more and more from the throng. Then finaly a blow found a battered leg guard and the enchantec blade drew blood. But Grundi was undaunted and swung back. He hit the vile warrior, but could not penetrate its armour. Nonetheless the thing withdrew and he had time. The chaos champion stood, but so was Grundi, Hold banner held strongly in his grasp!
Chaos warriors were so surprised that their attacks were much more feeble and only few unlucky dawi fell to their blades. Dawi, on the othere hand were heartened by his mighty stand and surged forward to push vile ones back. Even in the short respite he saw three fell warriors to be cut down by the onslaught of dawi axes....

Chaos player met proper Dawi tank build and was VERY surprised. When I suggested that I am a bit unlucky as I had a solid chance of saving all of his attacks, he was quite incredulous. He made the break test, but was down to 9 warriors and the mighty Valkija. But valkijas impact was now totaly limited by the sheer sturdiness of dawi wrought armour.

In ranger combat he killed "ONLY" 15 dawi, so just 6 were remaining. I needed insane courage to stay put.
I rolled it (first roll 1,2 and the second 1,1 -probably a recompense for the Rikkin grund hammerer combat... ).
So 6 dawi gave me time to try and win the game...

Turn 4 - Onggor Throng

Another flurry of blows. Grundi deflected some with the banner pole, some with the hammer shaft. Again his runic armour saved him, the chaos warrior thing has been unable to even scratch him, anymore. Shouts of "Grungni!" and "Beat the filth!" were more common from his brethren. It was too much for vile ones. Too many axes and hammers from all sides and the unbeatable dawi hold standard, that was too much. They broke and were run down by Azul Grund hammerers. Grundi saw as a hammerer hit the ankle of the unbeatable chaos champion thing. It tripped and then only sounds of big hammers smiting and breaking armour were to be heard. Finaly a piercing shriek meant the vile ones end. Remarkably, it sounded like a womans sob.
Grundi had no time to consider this. He was waving his banner to steady warriors around him and to reform them to support hammerers. Azul Grund was already marching to meet chaos riders. Jubilant cheers went from the warmachine crews. Grundi saw one barag to target something in the distance and being rewarded by a creaking sound. Good, some other chaos contraption was destroyed.

Barag Ong could see the war shrine, so I tried for it. Hit, wound, no ward (at least that) and 6 wounds later the shrine was no more.

Quite predictably BSB survived and warriors were too few to do any significant damage. I might have saved even something...
He was bit less lucky here and 4 dead chaos warriors later he broke and WAS catched!

Game was in the balance. (Just had to sruvive his knights).

Turn 5 - Chaos Tzeentch host

Thunder of hooves and titanic clash! That was the battle of Azul Grund against chaos riders. Again the vile barrier flickered and Grundi new what happened. Good dawi were fighting and dying! He spurred his brethren to hasten, but a terrible foreboding was upon him. What if even this will not be enough?
He dissmissed the thought. He was dawi and his duty was clear.

After a zillion of attacks - +1 attack from the shrine (he exchanged the blessing) +1 from the frenzy banner, it was 5 attacks per champion and i think 7 attacks per exalted champion(hero).
18 dead hammerers and 4 saved chaos knight wounds later I made my breaktest. I had one more turn tu survive. Easier said than done!

Turn 5 - Onggor Throng

Grundi and his clan brethren charged home. A red armoured chaos rider spurred his steed towards Grundi and shouted challenges. There was no one else to accept. Grundi stepped forward, describing the undescribable forebears of that thing. He smiled as he saw the chaos rider to froth! With the shout of "Grungni!" his warriors hit the riders. Like a tidal wave.
The chaos thing was fast. It had a huge axe, but swung it like it were a dagger. Grundi threw himself at it, and was pummeled back by a swift axe blow. The thing continued its unceasing attack and Grundi was forced to back up. He swung with his hammer, but before he could connect the blow, the axe swing took his hand. "Valaya!", was the last whisper to escape his lips. Then there was only dark and a gate of ancestors beconning to him...

Hammerers were slaughtered, but thanks to BSBs bravery one hammerer survived.
I lost and GW warriors fled (rolled promptly 10 for my steadfast break test -good this time).
The last hammerer standard bearer made his test and that was it.
Only remaining question was if I can destroy the shrine. Another 1 to wound later (second one) I knew it will not be this turn!

Turn 6 - Chaos Tzeentch host

"I tell you, beardlings, you should have seen old Grundi fight that day. He got hit more times then I can remmember and he went through those blows like they were just a little nuisance. That you should have seen. There were never many like him!", said the old warrior and waited for his flagon to be refilled. Young dawi understood and soon was the flagon full of foaming ale.
"So", continued the old warrior"we have run for it as he was dropped by that red abominable rider." Only old Sven remained with the banner to hold them up and give us time. He was slain, but him and the olde hammerer standard bearer Hufni kept them long enough for us to regroup!"
"Haaa, you thought we ran from the field and left our barags defenceless?", shouted the old longbeard.
None of the beardlings had the temerity to suggest such a thing, of course, but it was not needed, as the longbeard was in his rhetorical berserk rage and needed no proding or disrespect.
"No, we rallied and prepared to meet our doom. If we would have not, I would not be sitting here, but would be burning me hair on the Grimnir´s altar!", the old longbeard continued.
"Then, as we have already given our last prayers to Grungni, Grimnir and Valaya, a strange thig happened!", he drunk his flagon dry and crashed it on the table. Another beardling poored it full again.
"Our barags shot at their contraption and the magical tingling around the riders started to diminish. As one men, they turned their steeds and galloped into the gloom. Our barags were so surprised that they forgot to shoot at them!"
"And that was it. We were too tired to pursue and needed to get our wounded to priestesses of Valaya, so we packed our stuff and went home.", the old longbeard finished and then just fell silent.
Beardlings watched him in awe and none of them had the courage to ask something and disturb his thoughts...

The last hammerer dies. No big surprise here.

Turn 6 - Onggor Throng

I rally GW warriors. Then try to kill the last shrine.
He wards one wound and for another hit I roll 1 to wound.
Thats it. Game over.

It ended up 1411 pts. for dawi against 1825 for chaos. So a minor win for chaos, If I am not mistaken...
More grudges to inscribe into the Hold´s Dammaz Kron!
