Yeah, I hear ye snickerin' in yer ale. Anyway, this will be the batrep. And, if I can become competent with the interwebz and how to upload pics, I will post a few to this one. The opponent was Ogre Kingdoms. He had the following list -

Slaughtermaster, Level 4. Fencers blades, glittering Scales, something else.

Firebelly, level 2. had some stuff. Burning heart? I don't recall.

Bruiser BSB

12 Ironguts, FC. Standard of Discipline. BSB and General housed here.

9 Bulls, FC (Firebelly lived here)

4 Lead Belchers

Iron Blaster

3 Gorgers

My Throng -

40 GW Warriors, FC
15 Quarrelers w/GW, Musician
38 Hammerers, FC. Grungni

Canon, Burn and Forge. Canon, Forge. Organ Gun. GT w/Engineer, ACC, Pen 2.

Runelord with Anvil of Doom. Shield. Rune of Cleaving, Rune of Speed (what was I thinking here?), Rune of Resistence, Rune of Shielding, Spelleater Rune, Spell Breaker Rune.

Thane (General). Shield. Rune of Cleaving. MR of Challenge. Rune of Resistence, Rune of Stone.

Thane (BSB) Typical Tank build with RO Fire on the weapon.

I made a number of mistakes, and the first was deployment. The board was covered by rivers, but also had a big house in the dead center of the board. I deployed using the Rivers as yet another means of slowing down his big unit with his general and BSB. This was pretty effective, but it also kept my options less option in the mid and late game in terms of forcing his other units to continue to move while I did my best to evade them and slow them down with the Anvil. Furthermore, as I deployed, I wasn't really thinking ahead too much with regards to the three Gorgers that were going to be showing up soon. I put the Grudge Thrower in harms way, thinking the OG would protect it from one gorger while the Quarrelers dealt with the other two.

The OK deployed largely across from me on the left hand side of the board. Lead Belchers were lined up in front of the Bulls. The other belcher unit was to the right of them (from my perspective). Across the small river was his big unit of nasty nasty Ironguts and his command.

Sadly, I did not win first turn.

OK Turn one -

He moves. The Lead Belchers and Bulls march forward 12 inches. The big unit walks forward towards the water and does a big wheel. The Ironblaster moves into position to fire on my war machine park.

Magic gives him tooth cracker on one of his units. I let it slide, because he won't be on me in turn one or two, and the unit that got the buff was not going to be the target of my GT. Nothing else of consequence happens in the magic phase.

In the shooting phase, his Ironblaster destroys my Organ Gun. Sad panda is sad. Did I mention that I forgot to keep it in the Grungni bubble? Yeah. I r smrt.

Dwarf Turn 1)

Movement - I have my quarrelers face the inevitable direction the Gorgers will come from next turn. They aren't in a good position to protect the GT from a charge. I should have simply moved them into a better position, but I had to choose. I figured 15 of them could kill one gorger, and maybe get charged by a second. The third might be a problem. It would turn out to be a game changing problem. More on that later.

I use the Rune of Wrath and Ruin on the Ironguts. In retrospect, I could have waited and slowed down the Leadbelchers (and maybe killed a couple of them, and caused a panic. I hate good ideas that come to me after turn 6), which would have in turn slowed down the bulls behind them. However, my cunning plans was to have my artillery weaken the bulls while the Anvil slowed down the Irongut bus.

The Grudge Thrower fails at life, and my canon kills a couple Ironguts but fails to kill the Ironblaster, who is safely nestled behind them. Stupid monstrous infantry.

OK 2) He moves as best he can. He's now in 24" range for his lead belchers. I'm not too worried about their gunfire. It has a minimum impact on my army.

Two of the Gorgers show up. Damn.

Magic from this point on completely fails him or if it succeeds, it has little impact on the game. At least the Anvil had that going for it.

His Ironblaster Shoots my canon, but bounces off Grungni. Whew! Love that master rune.

A handful of hammerers are killed by the lead belchers.

Dwarf Turn 2)

I am a bit paniced by the presence of three Gorgers in my backfield. I make a fatal error here, one that probably completely cost me the game. I have this handy dandy Anvil of Doom, which will let me charge in the shooting phase, right? So, here's the plan. I'll Move the GT out of harms way. I'll then kill one Gorger with the Quarrelers, and my Hammerers will Anvil Charge into the remaning one and kill it in one turn. The third will show up and get quarreled down, too. Such fine and lofty plans.

So, I do three wounds to the first gorger, leaving it with one wound. Then, I successfully pull of the charge on the other gorger, who also survives the onslaught and then pins me there for a bit. Stupid unbreakable nutjob starving ogre!

This was easily the key mistake. I needed to deal with the Gorgers, no doubt. However, my method was poor. I couldn't pop Rune of Challenge because of their frenzy and unbreakable. I should have simply charged my BSB out to hold them down while the Quarrelers flanked them. Silly, silly me.

The restof my shooting was ineffective. Sigh.

Ogre Kingdoms 3 -

Movement happens.

He fails at magic.

He kills several GW warriors (now out of grungni. Stupid, stupid mistake). Nothing of consequence happens in close combat. Dammit. Stupid Gorger should be dead by now, and now his third is up. Sigh.

Dwarf Turn 3 -

Canons fail once again to get through the Irongut wall and kill the Ironblaster. They take out yet another Irongut, but it's cold comfort.

I come up with a cunning plan. It's a good plan. The Leadbelchers aren't in immediate charge range, but they are in range with an anvil charge. The Irongut horde is still hampered by the water. I can anvil charge into the Leadbelchers, kill them, and then overrun into the bulls and prevent their impact hits. It's genius! I am very confident in my cunning plan.

And it works! I charge into the Lead belchers. Huzzah!

In shooting, the Quarrelers kill a Gorger. The Grudge Thrower kills a Bull. Sigh. The Hammerers finally kill their gorger and reform behind the Quarrelers. Things are sort of looking up.

IN close combat, the Leadbelchers lose and flee, and I pursue right into the Bulls. Excellent! I prevented their impact hits. Sadly, the fleeing belchers didn't panic the Bulls, which was the bestest possible result for me. But, I was still in a favorable situation, right? Right? Heh.

Ogre Turn 4 -

The LBs rally behind the bulls. The Irongut Bus reforms and makes it's way through the river, dangerously close to charge range. Not good. The other unit of Lead Belchers advances to a hill that's in range of my Quarrelers. Not good.

His magic phase is once agains shut down.

MR of Grungni manages to rescue three different Dawi from a canon ball intended to rip into our ranks. I think he made a blunder here by not focusing on my artillery with his. But, it didn't really matter in the end.

In Close Combat with the Bulls, my Champion calls his Firebelly out. Believing that he cannot lose, the Firebelly doesn't use his breath weapon. He does not harm the champion, and in response, the Champion does two wounds to the firebelly. Sadly, the stomp kills my champion.

In close combat, though, the Ogres come out on top. I'm steadfast, but I fluff the roll and run. By sheer luck I manage to outrun the pursuing bulls by one inch.

Dwarf Turn 4 -

Things are looking..grim-ish.

I shift my Quarrelers to be available for a flank against the Ironguts should they successfully charge my Hammeres. This was fatal mistake number two. The Lead Belchers were in Rune of Challenge Range. I should have popped it on their next turn, forced the charge. I would have slaughterd them, and would have prevented the fatal flank that won the game for my opponent. I also should have turned the Quarrelers a bit more outward so they would not be flanked by LBs.

My GW Warriors Rally and face the inevitable bull charge. The Canon Crew, However, take aim and kill the Firebelly, even through the Look Out Sir! Roll!!! The GT strikes home and kills two ogres in the bull unit, as well. I am feeling much more confident in my GW warrior's chances, depleted as they are.

Ogre 5)

The Bulls charge the Great Weapons. I hold. The IG successfully charges the hammerers. Damn. I hold. He gets the big impact hits. The LBs charge the Quarrelers and get the big impact hits. Damn.

Nothing of consequence happens in the Magic phase. I try to Spell Eat his Trollguts, but fail.

His Ironblaster hits my canon but fails to wound. It rolls through to strike the Anvil of Doom, but the ward save carries the day. 25 pts very well spent IMHO.

combat is ugly all around. The hammerers and the GW Warriors both lose combat, but hold their ground due to Steadfast. The Quarrelers are beaten and flee, but are run down. The GT is in the way, however. So, the Qs are dead, and the Grudge Thrower is about to be. Not good.

Dwarf 5)

Nothing happens in movement. My shooting phase finally brings down his Ironblaster.

The GW Warriors smash the bulls, who flee and panic the Lead Belchers, who also flee.

My BSB is locked in a duel to the death with his BSB. No one will die, nor even wound one another, but it's pretty to watch. My General, opposite the well protected Slaughtermaster, does not kill him, but wounds him. The hammerers, however, are being depleated quickly.

The Grudge thrower is killed, despite a seriously valiant effort onthe part of the Engineer (who forgot to stand and shoot, dammit).

Ogre turn 6) Lead Belchers charge into the Hammerer flank. Ugh. Not good at all.

Magic fails.

In close combat, the hammerers are killed almost to a man. Only the champion remains, but the stubborn he provides keeps my heroes in combat. Not that it will matter for next turn, he's doomed. However, it was nice to not lose my general and BSB as well.

Dwarf Turn 6)

In a desperate attempt to gain some victory points, I try to gun down the enemy. I come up short on canon fire to kill the fleeing Bulls. I should have used the Rune of Wrath And Ruin in the hopes of a lucky roll to finish the job, but instead chose to try and get a charge from the anvil. It did not run them down, so he got to keep those victory points.

In close combat, after a valiant struggle, my last hammerer was killed. I still wound up winning combat somehow, as my BSB and my General took no damage, but the enemy did not break.

It was a very close game, and I made some very stupid mistakes. I have a lot of faith in this concept, but I think I might need to tweak the list just a bit. More testing is needed, but I'm not ready to give up. Between terrain and the Anvil, I kept the BSB and General and bigass unit of Ironguts out of combat for a very long time. Had I not moved so far to kill the Gorgers, and had I simply sacrificed my War Machines there to them and then killed them closer to my lines, the Ironguts would never have made it into combat in time to kill my Hammerers.

So, the strat is sound, the General just needs to think more clearly and make better choices.
