To give some backstory, a Dwarf player in my club called me out after a practice game last week for an up-and-coming tourney. After he whined a bunch about my Dark Elves and said my list did all the work, I decided to call him out on it. I offered to swap armies with him, so we did, with both of us adjusting each others' lists slightly just to suit our personal styles.

My list:
-Runelord, RoResistance, RoPreservation, RoStone, shield, 2x RoSpellbreaking, MRofBalance.
-Thane with MRoGromril, RoPreservation, RoResistance, RoFire, battle standard.
-Dragonslayer with RoFire, Initiative, Weapon Skill
-40 Warriors with fc, great weapons.
-40 Rangers with fc, great weapons.
-38 Hammerers with fc, MRoGrungni
-Cannon with Engineer, RoForging, RoBurning
-Cannon with Engineer, RoForging
-Grudge Thrower with Engineer, 2x RoPenetrating, RoAccuracy
-Organ Gun

The DE list:
-Supreme Sorc (Level 4) with Sacrificial Dagger, Talisman of Endurance, Lore of Shadow.
-Sorc (Level 2) with Dispel Scroll
-Cauldron BSB
-30 Warriors with fc, shields
-20 Repeater Crossbowmen with fc, shields
-20 Repeater Crossbowmen with fc, shields
-5 Harpies
-8 Shades with dual hand weapons
-20 Black Guard with fc, Crimson Death, Banner of Murder
-10 Cold One Knights with fc, Banner of Hag Graef
-War Hydra

Terrain:
-We ended up with a lot of terrain, including many obstacles. I grabbed the Altar of Khaine early, putting it in a deployment zone knowing that I could either use it for my own forces defensively or neither side would really benefit if it ended up in my opponent's deployment zone. My opponent threw out as many obstacles as possible to shield his Hydra from cannonballs, but I countered by putting a marsh in the middle of the table to jam up his advance. I ended up winning the roll for table side and took the zone with the Altar of Khaine.

Spell selection:
-Supreme Sorc has Miasma, Withering, Pit of Shades, Mindrazor
-Sorc has Chillwind, Word of Pain

Deployment
With so few drops on my side, I deployed as safely and conservatively as possible using the "artillery diamond" (definitely an effective method, kudos to those who introduced it to me) to keep my machines central and easy to defend. I figured the Dark Elves would identify which flank didn't have the Hammerers and go after that one, so I was ready with my Rangers to bolster that flank and keep my defenses strong. I tossed the Rangers on the Altar of Khaine.

Dark Elf Turn 1
Despite my +1, the Dark Elves got the first turn. With a passed Stupidity test and a 5+ Ward on the Black Guard, everything came cruising forward. I kept Miasma off my Hammerers with dispel dice, not wanting their movement reduced, and scrolled Pit of Shades.

Dwarf Turn 1
I hopped the rangers out of the building, and swung the Hammerers towards the more dangerous Dark Elf flank. Shooting opened up with the Organ Gun on the Harpies, killing 3, while a direct hit with the Grudge Thrower killed 7 Black Guard. Cannonfire combined to knock three wounds off the Hydra.

Dark Elf Turn 2
The Cold Ones failed their Stupidity test and staggered forward 6 inches, into convenient charge range of the Rangers. The Hydra went for a charge attempt on the Warriors and failed. The remaining Harpies flapped up to park in front of the Hammerers and block off their advance. Magic fired up with a low roll, and I stopped Pit of Shades and Miasma on my Rangers but their Toughness was Withered down to 1.

Dwarf Turn 2
The Warriors went into the Hydra, and I charged the Slayer Hero at the Black Guard hoping the Warriors would blast through the Hydra and be able to fight a multiple combat against Black Guard before they could be magic buffed. Unfortunately, a miserable charge roll of 3 meant the Slayer was blocking the Ranger charge to the Cold One Knights as well. For shooting, the Organ Gun opened up on the Shades and killed 5, while both cannons opened up on the Cold One Knights for lack of a better target and killed 3 knights. The Grudgethrower scattered woefully off target on the Black Guard.

Dark Elf Turn 3
The Black Guard took +1 Attack from the Cauldron and charge into the Warriors, cleverly aligning to be JUST close enough to get the Frenzy benefit of the Altar of Khaine. The Cold One Knights charged at the slow Slayer, aligning so their overrun would take them into the Rangers. One repeater crossbow unit quick reformed and moved in case it had to serve as a combat block. For magic, the Dwarves had a huge dice advantage and a scroll left, so the Dark Elves 6-diced Mindrazor on the Black Guard and managed to snag Irresistible Force. The Supreme Sorc lost a level for her troubles, but the combination of Cauldron Buff and Frenzy from the Altar of Khaine meant all 34-ish Dwarves were wiped out before they got a chance to swing. The Cold One Knights ran over the slayers, but botched their overrun and stopped short of the Rangers.

Dwarf Turn 3
The Rangers barreled into the Cold One Knights, while the Hammerers wheeled towards the Black Guard to help keep them under control in case they survived my shooting phase. A direct grudge thrower hit, an Organ Gun Salvo and some grapeshot wiped out the Black Guard without much fuss. The Cold One Knights help up very well to the Ranger charge, piling up a strong body count with 8 kills. The Rangers managed 11 wounds, but a rolling streak by the Cold One Knights meant 10 saves and the Rangers held on Steadfast.

Dark Elf Turn 4
Some shuffling by the Dark Elves, and a strong move by the ranked-up Crossbowmen to get into my backline and tackle my warmachines. A pretty dry magic phase for the Dark Elves, with attempts to debuff my Rangers largely kept in check with dispel dice and the use of my last scroll. The Cold One Knights with +1 Attack from the Cauldron kept up their rolling streak, killing another half dozen Rangers and only taking a casualty in return.

Dwarf Turn 4
The Hammerers turned to deal with the Crossbowmen heading for the backline. I pounded all my missile fire into the Spearmen bunker, landing a direct grudge thrower hit that killed 18 models while an Organ Gun volley took them below Look Out Sir strength. One cannon shot took out the Sorc, the other took out the Supreme Sorc, basically assuring the game was over. The Rangers kept up the grind against the Cold One Knights.

Dark Elf Turn 5
The Crossbowmen hit the Cannon, and blew through it in one round thanks to +1 Attack from the Cauldron. The Rangers finished up the last Cold One Knight, while the Crossbowmen overran into the Grudge Thrower.

Dwarf Turn 5
The Hammerers hit the Crossbowmen in the rear, while the Rangers went after the Cauldron. Missile fire polished off the Shades, the Hammerers massacred the crossbowmen and drove them off the table, and the Cauldron fought the Rangers to a standstill.

Dark Elf Turn 6
Things wrapped up this turn. There wasn't much chance of netting any more VP with the remnants of the warrior block hiding behind the tower, and the Cauldron crew didn't look like it was going down to the Rangers any time soon. We called it a game, with a massive victory in favor of the Dwarves and endless bragging rights over my opponent.

Final VP: 655 to 1941 in favor of the Dwarves

I had lost:

-Dragonslayer with RoFire, Initiative, Weapon Skill
-40 Warriors with fc, great weapons.
-Cannon with Engineer, RoForging, RoBurning

He had lost:

-Supreme Sorc (Level 4) with Sacrificial Dagger, Talisman of Endurance, Lore of Shadow.
-Sorc (Level 2) with Dispel Scroll
-20 Repeater Crossbowmen with fc, shields
-5 Harpies
-8 Shades with dual hand weapons
-20 Black Guard with fc, Crimson Death, Banner of Murder
-10 Cold One Knights with fc, Banner of Hag Graef
-War Hydra

Conclusion:
Overall, a good game. I have had a lot of past experience with Dwarves during my time with the hobby, so felt good about the matchups and allocation of my shooting. I think my opponent struggled to grasp that most Dark Elf units exist to serve the hard-hitters of the list and help deliver them to combat. He was at a loss as to why his repeater crossbowmen and Lore of Shadow weren't killing more, or allowing him to auto-win combats. The biggest magic factor he saw was an Irresistible Mindrazor, which did result in a very decisive combat in his favor, but he wasn't able to use that synergy for more than just one turn. Overall, quite a fun experience.
