Greetings my fellow Dwarves,

The 8th edition is here, along with the errata. There is some confusion & problems. This thread is for you to post your grievances & list things that need to be clarified/changed.
Remember:

Try to post in a Direwolf way, see below for what we mean!
Do so in a clear, calm manner.
No arguing, excessive griping or discussion. There are other threads for that.
GW does come here & there is a chance the Errata could be changed.
If your post is not appropraite , you will be warned & your post removed. No joke.

Without further ado, here is the list that Gary has so far collected:

CHARACTERS

Q: How does the Dwarf Master Engineer's Artillery Master special rule affect Dwarf cannons?

Commentary: The FAQ answer says a Dwarf Master Engineer increases the damage caused by a cannon from multiple wounds (D3) to multiple wounds (D6). However, all cannons now have the multiple wounds (D6) special rule. Since the Dwarf army book references the main Warhammer Rulebook, this appears inconsistent.

Q: When does a Master Engineer have to declare if he is going to use his Artillery Master ability on a nearby Bolt Thrower, Grudge Thrower or Cannon within 3", before or after the To Hit/artillery die has been rolled? This is important when the Master Engineer is within 3" of more than one war machine.

Commentary: Now that the Master Engineer no longer has to be joined to the unit to use his abilities, unscrupulous players could possibly abuse the new rule when firing war machines by carefully placing the model near multiple machines and waiting until one fails its action before deciding to utilise the Master Engineer.

Q: Can a cannon within 3" of a Master Engineer use his ballistic skill when firing grapeshot?

Commentary: It is unclear if the Artillery Master ability that allows a bolt thrower to use the Master Engineer's Ballistic Skill also applies to a cannon firing grapeshot since grapeshot in previous editions of the rules did not use ballistic skill to resolve hits. Please advise.

Q: Does a Dwarf Lord mounted on Shieldbearers count as Infantry or Cavalry? For instance, does he get a Look Out, Sir! roll when in a unit of infantry?

Commentary: The text in the Dwarf army book repeatedly uses the terms 'mount' and 'mounted' in the rules. This has led to some confusion about whether the Dwarf Lord benefits from certain rules that apply only to one or the other unit type. Please clarify.

Q: If a character is armed with a magic weapon that cannot harm his opponent, e.g. Dwarf Lord with the Rune of Fire on his axe fighting vs a High Elf Prince wearing Dragon armour, is he allowed to use his mundane hand weapon (or special weapon if he has one) instead? There is some confusion about the note on page 89 of the 8th Edition rulebook where it references using other weapons if the magic weapon is "rendered useless." Does this mean the item has to be destroyed to use one of the non-magical weapons or simply rendered ineffectual as in the situation with the Dwarf Lord vs High Elf Prince above?

Commentary: Please clarify the intent of this rule and its interaction with the "I'm Using this One" rule on page 501.

WAR MACHINES

Q: Does the Gyrocopter Steam Gun still roll for partial hits or are all models touched by the template automatically hit?

Commentary: Since all other template weapons in the game have had partial hits removed and now simply reference the template rules in the main Warhammer rulebook, this would appear to be an oversight. Please clarify.

Q: Can the Gyrocopter march and still fire its Steam Gun?

Commentary: The Gyrocopter's Steam Gun is not specified to be a particular type of weapon, thus there is some confusion about whether it can be fired if the Gyrocopter marches. The closest rule that seems applicable is the one for breath weapons (page 67) where it says they can be used if the model marched or reformed. However, the Steam Gun is not listed as a breath weapon (which coincidentally is also one-shot only which obviously is not appropriate for the Gyrocopter). Please clarify.

Q: Can the Gyrocopter's Steam Gun be used in close combat in a manner similar to a model with a breath weapon?

Commentary: The Gyrocopter is to be treated like a flying monster and while technically not a breath weapon, the Steam Gun does seem to function in a manner similar to one. Please clarify.

Q: Can the Gyrocopter actually perform a flee move, either by declaring a flee charge reaction, failing a panic check or breaking from combat? According to the 8th Edition Fly special rule, flyers move along the ground when fleeing. Even though the Gyrocopter has the Swiftstride special rule, in its own special rules it has no ground movement rate and it also specifies that the Gyrocopter is not allowed to move if it cannot fly for any reason.

Commentary: There is come confusion about whether the Gyrocopter can actually perform a flee move under the current rules. Please clarify.

Q: Is the handgun purchased by a Dwarf Engineer upgrade to a war machine classed as a Dwarf Handgun, i.e. does it get the +1 to hit when used in a Stand and Shoot situation?

Commentary: This question was asked in the new Dwarf 8th Edition FAQ, but was skipped over. Please clarify.

Q: The Flame Cannon now uses the Fire Thrower rules in the main Warhammer rulebook. Does this mean it now no longer has a 12" base range and instead has a range of 0"?

Commentary: The new Fire Thrower rules would seem to imply the shortened range. Given that this means the device would have a maximum range of 18" at the tip of the template, it would seem to be too short to be of much use for an actual war machine, i.e. units which are usually meant to function as a static fire platform. Please clarify.

Q: Do cannons suffer the to hit penalties for targets at long range, in cover, skirmishers, etc. when rolling to hit with grapeshot?

Commentary: The cannon rules do not state whether it suffers any of the normal to hit penalties. Please clarify.

Q: Does a Dwarf war machine inscribed with the Rune of Burning cause fear in cavalry and similar units in hand to hand combat?

Commentary: It is unclear since the Rune of Burning's flaming attacks are generated in the shooting phase, not in combat. Please clarify.

Q: Does adding a Dwarf Engineer upgrade to a war machine increase the number of enemy models that can engage the crew in combat?

Commentary: This is not addressed at all in the rules. Please clarify.

Q: How should the effect of the Master Rune of Disguise be implemented? The options that seem viable are:

the model is placed on the table at deployment, but described as hidden

in the Deployment phase the owning player marks the position of the machine secretly on a piece of paper (as a map, coordinate, or distance and direction from a static board feature) and shows this to their opponent when the machine is revealed.

Is either of these interpretations correct? If not, please clarify.

Commentary: There is some confusion as to how to play this particular rune.

Q: In the FAQ you explain that inscribing the Rune of Penetrating on a Grudge Thrower modifies the weapon to be Strength 4(10). Are you still allowed to inscribe additional Runes of Penetrating on the same Grudge Thrower (up to the max of three, of course), thus increasing the basic Strength to 5(10) or 6(10)?

Commentary: It is unclear if the FAQ answer is categorical since regardless the number of Runes of Penetrating inscribed on the Grudge Thrower, it is still "a Grudge thrower (that has been) inscribed with the Rune of Penetrating" and could thus be argued that the second and subsequent runes have no effect. Please clarify the intent of this answer.

ANVIL OF DOOM

Q: Can a Runelord with an Anvil of Doom still participate in a challenge? If so, how are wounds removed? If the Runelord is killed, but the guards still remain, is the Anvil destroyed? This question also applies to any Dwarf war machine that has an Engineer as an upgrade.

Commentary: The new rules for the Anvil of Doom specify a certain order that wounds are removed, i.e. guards first. It is unclear if this is the same order to be used in a challenge situation.

Q: Is a Runelord with an Anvil of Doom affected by Killing Blow and/or Heroic Killing Blow? If so, is the entire model removed or only one of the remaining crew per wound inflicted with Killing Blow? This question also applies to war machines in general.

Commentary: Since there is a specific order for wound removal for the Anvil of Doom, and the Anvil of Doom is classified as a War Machine unit type, it is unclear if Killing Blow and/or Heroic Killing Blow have any effect and whether or not the unit type War Machine overrides the Runelord's (or crew's) unit type Infantry.

Q: How do multiple wound weapons / attacks work against the Anvil of Doom now? Do they only kill one model or do wounds propagate across the guards and/or Runelord?

Commentary: It is unclear how this works since the guards / Runelord are separate entities. Please clarify.

Q: Does the Anvil of Doom's Wrath and Ruin ability halve the entire movement of an enemy unit, including the 2D6" added charge movement or does it only halve the unit's base movement stat? If it is the latter, how does Wrath and Ruin work against models with a random movement value, e.g. Chaos Spawn, Doomwheel, etc.?

Commentary: This is unclear since 8th edition added random movement values for charging rather than basing it on the base movement stat.

DWARF ARMY

Q: If a character with an Oathstone is in a unit wide enough to adopt the Horde formation (i.e. 10+ models wide) and drops the oathstone as a charge reaction, does the Horde rule only apply to those edges of the formation that are 10+ models wide? For instance, a 50-strong unit of Dwarf warriors is 10 wide by 5 deep. Do attacks to the 5-wide flanks of the unit benefit from the fighting 3-ranks deep?

Commentary: This is unclear since the Horde rule normally applies only to attacks to the front of the unit.

Q: Do Miners equipped with Blasting Charges cause fear in cavalry and similar units?

Commentary: It is unclear since they are used as a Stand & Shoot reaction during the Combat phase, yet do not apply to the Miners' Combat attacks. Please advise.

Q: How does the Master Rune of Steel (all hits counted as S5) interact with the Dark Elf Crimson Death (always strikes at S6)? Which ability takes precedence?

Commentary: It is unclear how to adjudicate this conflict. Please advise.

Q: How does the Master Rune of Skalf Blackhammer (the bearer always strikes with the strength required to wound the opponent on a 2+) interact with opponents who are Toughness 9 or 10? Obviously the rune will be capped at Strength 10. However, is the rune meant to:

always wound on a 2+, but calculate Strength as above up to a maximum of 10 for purposes of armour save, etc.?

calculate Strength as appropriate up to a maximum of 10, thus the bearer will wound opponents with Toughness 9 on a 3+ and those with Toughness 10 on a 4+?

Commentary: It is unclear how to adjudicate this rune's effects against models with exceptionally high Toughness. Please clarify.

Q: Which occurs first, Vanguard movement or Strollaz's Rune movement?

Commentary: The Strollaz Rune says it's movement happens before rolling to see who gets first turn while Vanguard says before either has taken a turn. It is unclear whether you should dice off for this result as in the situation when both sides have Vanguard troops. Please clarify.

Q: This is not so much a question about the rules, but a query about an inconsistency in an answer provided in the recently released official Dwarf FAQ and Errata. In it you state that for models armed with a weapon inscribed with both the Rune of Cleaving (+1 Strength) and Rune of Might (double Strength vs opponents with Toughness 5 or greater) that the order in which the Runic bonus is applied is chosen by the player whose turn it is. For example, a Dwarf lord with this combination in combat with the Steam Tank (Toughness 10) would be inflicting hits at Strength 10, i.e. (4+1)2, thus needing 4's to wound the Tank. In the opponent's turn the attacks would obviously be resolved at Strength 9, or (42+1), and needing 5's to inflict a wound. This seems odd and is the only answer provided in any of the new Army FAQs where the results of combining bonuses changes based on player turn, thus leading to some confusion due to the inconsistency. Please clarify if this was the intent or if it was simply an oversight.

Commentary: Given that all other FAQ answers provide a categoric order to such combinations, e.g. Dark Elf Rending Stars + Manbane are applied in a strict order, this particular answer has caused some confusion. From a Dwarf background perspective it also seems inappropriate for a Runic item to have variable effects. We are not weedy and unskilled grobi after all 😉.

SCENARIOS

Q: In the "Battle for the Pass" scenario (p. 146), are Dwarf Miners (or other troops that use underground means to enter the battlefield) allowed to enter from the long table edges?

Commentary: the Warhammer rulebook states that only fliers and etheric units can go over the high cliffs that enclose the pass. However, Dwarf Miners and some other troops appear from underground, thus there is some rationale that this may be allowed. Please advise.

Q: If a particular scenario (e.g. Meeting Enagement) requires a Dwarf Runelord with the Anvil of Doom to enter via reserves, how is this handled? This also applies to any other immobile war machine such as the Casket of Souls, etc. The options appear to be:

The Anvil cannot enter via reserves and therefore plays no part in the battle. If this is true, does it count for purposes of victory point calculation?

The Anvil is placed anywhere along the Dwarf player's board edge (or deployment zone, whichever is appropriate) when it arrives from reserves, but cannot move further during the game. If this is the case, is the Runelord allowed to strike runes on the Anvil the turn it arrives?

Commentary: There is nothing in the Reserves rules detailing how to handle immobile units. Please clarify.

Thanks,
B.A.
