Yes, well, alright, it's not dwarfs, but both sides have lots of toughness 4 and low initiative :p I happened to have this report typed up for my lizardmen blog and thought it a shame not to show it to you guys too. This is the first time I got to use my new lizardmen book.

We had a really fun battle. Had some setbacks (damn dice) in the first couple turns, but I think I managed to decently claw my way back towards the end. The VP were something like 1255 for me to 1605 for him, though we agreed that I had a good shot at taking more if we had played a last turn (I think we ended on turn 5 due to time). All in all not too shabby anyway, considering some disobedient dice the first couple turns.

2400pts lizardmen vs 2400pts Nurgle daemons of chaos

The lists were in short;

Slann (4 disciplines: Loremaster high magic, reroll first failed dispel attempt each magic phase, alter miscast table result by 1, use 3 channeldice instead of 1.) He was also the BSB and had the channeling staff, which is worth gold along with the channeling discipline.
Scar veteran with great weapon, light armour and sacred stegadon helm, luckstone and dragonbane gem. lvl1 beasts skink priest with scroll
3x10 skink skirmishers (1x blowpipes, 2x javelins), 1x10 skink cohort, 29 saurus w/full command
29 templeguard w/full command, 2x5 chameleon skinks
Ancient stegadon with devastating charge and D3 wound impact hits, Salamander hunting pack, Troglodon
Great Unclean one (lvl4 lore of nurgle, exalted gift and minor gift), herald (greater gift, BSB, lvl1 lore of nurgle)
45 (I think) plaguebearers with full command
2x2 nurgling bases, 2x3 beasts of nurgle
skull cannon, soulgrinder (nurgle)
The pictures generally speak for themselves.

Daemon turn 1:
He had first turn and advanced. In the back on the right are some nurglings attempting to block the chameleon skinks. My deployment is fairly normal too, with the cohort behind the saurus blocks, ostensibly to keep the saurus in line, but there's actually no reason for it in a game against daemons, so I suppose I could've put them somewhere else.. My troglodon and ancient stegadon are behind the massive tower, using the tower and its hill to screen themselves from the skullcannon for the first turn. There are also some skinks with them. On the right of the tower there is also a 2nd group of beasts, you can see a corner of them on the second picture.

The skullcannon misfires but rolls a 6 on the table, so no harm.

Lizardmen turn 1:
I advance slightly with the saurus. The chameleons on the left slip between the soulgrinder and skullcannon to harras the soulgrinder and pick off some wounds.

The ancient stegadon gets a charge off on the beasts of nurgle, rolls up 7 impact hits and disastrously only wounds 2! Out of 7! On 3+'s! Such an enormous missed opportunity! Had it been a more average roll it might've allowed me to turn the flank and assault his second beasts or his unclean one. 1 of the wounds goes through regeneration and causes 2 wounds. The stegadon and beasts will spend the next 7 or 9 combat phases plinking ineffectively at eachother, where the stegadon only does 1 more wound in total, and the beasts together 3 in total (to the steg's credit he did pass absurd amounts of 4+ armoursaves, but he was cringeworthy at hitting back).

The troglodon sneaks around the building, spits at the unclean one and misses. The skink skirmisher manage a wound though. Magic is fairly uninteresting almost the entire game through. I did have a phase or 2-3 with a good pool, but then only managed to cast 1 spell every time before falling 1 or 2 short on the next one and ending the phase. The last time he healed some wounds back on himself with an IF apotheosis, got a result 9 miscast (magical feedback) and lost 1 wound, then lost 6 of the remaining 7 dice from the pool..

Daemon turn 2:
This sight is exactly the same as last turn, and is going to be like that for quite a while.

His 2nd turn, he charged my blowpipe skinks with his beasts of nurgle, after they received a good peppering of poison from them (I'm fine with it, it leaves the beasts in a good position for a countercharge from the saurus). With the skinks' shooting phase and the following stand&shoot one toad actually goes down, which is more than I could say from the stegadon. The central plaguebearers and the left flank advance. The skullcannon snipes the skink priest out of his unit on his first shot.. A good thing I used his scroll in that magic phase already, but still...

Rot, glorious rot!

Lizardmen turn 2:
I advance and attempt a series of cunning gambits under the general motto (said aloud repeatedly!) 'no guts, no glory!' As you have come to expect from me that'll totally fall through roughly in the first step.

The templeguard charge the nurglings who moved in front of them, hoping to overrun at least about 5 inches in order to get out of the soulgrinder's arc of sight (I don't want them to be stuck the rest of the game fighting a T7 creature, who I'd rather poison to death instead) and get into a scrap with the plaguebearers instead and activate the troglodon's roar. The troglodon moved behind the building, praying not to get 1-shot by the skullcannon so he can rush/charge forward next turn, help in the combat and activate his roar. He could also fire his spit once more, because he failed his marchblock test so couldn't march anyway. The saurus charged the unit of 2 beasts, hoping their str7 scar veteran and vast numeric superiority gets them through them in 2-3 turns.

At this point the soulgrinder lost 2 wounds to the skink poisons. I tried using 'walk between worlds' to move the salamander through the building into a prime position for flaming the plaguebearers, but it is dispelled. I guess I don't regret dropping 2 salamanders from my old list. Even though they're str4 now, without march & fire they're way less flexible.

Anyway, back to the plan;

Templeguard ravage the nurglings and unsurprisingly blunder forwards only 3 inches. I just needed 5 or more, damnit! Just 5! A good thing I put the failure bodyguard cohort to block the soulgrinder from the templeguard, assuming they could manage not to break for 1 round.
Saurus don't do much, 2 wounds I think, taking 2 or 3 in return. They win by quite a lot -5 or 6 - but the beasts roll 3 on their instability so don't even suffer any extra wounds.
Troglodon's spit misses again.

I love it when a plan comes together.

Oh, yeh, and the stegadon is still grinding pointlessly.

Daemons turn 3:
The daemons surge to their advantage. The plaguebearers charge, the skullcannon charges in the side (and despite my fervent prays did not flip over and die to the little fence). The soulgrinder charges the skink cohort. The combined violence - quite a lot of which came from the skullcannon - kills about 2 rows of templeguard. I do inflict 12 wounds back but regeneration saves most, so only 5 die. Not looking good there.

The stegadon is still grinding without result. The saurus get 1 or 2 wounds further, but the beasts roll leadership 3 again. I reform the saurus to face sideways so they can charge into the other combat when they're done (though at this point I realise I didn't even need to. Whenever I won (in whatever turn) I could reform to face that way anyway. Then again it doesn't seem it took me longer to kill them due to that reform, and at least I was safer from potential flankcharges).

For the skink cohort against the soulgrinder it went very fortuitous in fact, when they lost 3 skinks and did a wound back, but then got 6 thunderstomps in the face. Oh, why couldn't it be 4 or 5? The skink cohort turns into a snippet of light as they (somehow) manage to their ground.

Lizardmen turn 3:
In my turn I charge the Troglodon into the rear of the combat, hoping to do a couple of support kills with thunderstomps in order to keep the templeguard alive for a turn or so longer so the saurus can arrive. I avoid standing in sight of the great unclean one who'd just splatter him across the table in a shower of gore and charge in around him behind him.

With the soulgrinder and skullcannon in close combat there is little for the skinks to do.. until they find a perfect unexpected target: The great unclean one. With toughness being fairly redundant, and only a 5+ wardsave, I pepper him with darts, javelins and an arcane unforging from the slann and bring him down to 2 wounds. Excellent.

The skullcannon fights himself out of the combat when the crew kill 1 templeguard. The plaguebearers inflict about 10 wounds, but with a poor round of saves I lose all remaining templeguard except the champion. I activated the troglodon's roar in this turn so they did have a fairly decent round of attacks before they went down, and the troglodon contributes a kill or two - enough to make sure the troglodon himself doesn't run away. The slann is stubborn thanks to the remaining champion. The skinks facing the soulgrinder die.

In case you're wondering, the stegadon is still grinding.

Daemons turn 4:
The great unclean one seeks to escape the skink barrage and charges a nearby skink unit behind the tower. He suffers 1 more wound on the stand & shoot, but none in combat and kills the unit, overrunning to stand against the perpetually grinding beasts (why have by now made some progress and inflicted 2 or 3 wounds).

The soulgrinder finished the skinks last turn, so charges the templeguardian in the flank. The slann issued a challenge (which he did last turn too, by the way) to force the nurgle BSB into the back. The soulgrinder's high initiative (3, which is fairly high compared to everything non-skink on the table) actually causes him a problem now, as he now has to strike before the plaguebearers (or the herald) can get to kill the revered guardian, so he is stuck killing 1 templeguard before passing the torch (so to speak) to the plaguebearers. They inflict a fairly obscene number of wounds on the slann, considering they only had 13 attacks to attack the slann with, but he barely limps away - passing 6 out of 10 wardsaves. Heart skipped a beat there. Thanks to the troglodon's efforts he manages to stay standing.

This proves to be the turn we finally ended that charade of a combat on the right flank. The stegadon suffered a wound, predictably killing nothing and finally ran away and was caught.

Lizardmen turn 4:
This is the last turn that we got to play before we had to start packing up.

The Slann - with 1 wound remaining - rolls a solid pool of dice (10 if I recall correctly) and starts with 3-dicing the upped version of Apotheosis, rolling irresistible force and recovering 3 wounds. I initially roll 10 on the miscast table, but with the slann's 'soul of stone' discipline I adjust it down to 9 so I just suffer a single strength 6 hit. It does cost me a wound, but I still have 3 left. It'd have been great if I had got to cost some more, but sadly the miscast also drains D6 dice from the pool, for which I rolled a 6, so that remaining last dice of didn't do much against the daemons 5 dispeldice, as you might expect.

I gathered all the skinks I could find around the great unclean one, who had just 1 wound left. I figured I'd just start off with a chameleon unit first (who seemed to be rolling more poorly than the javelin skinks), who rolled up 1 wound which promptly was enough to do the trick. The salamander also fires at the beasts who overran the stegadon so he'd finally get to do something, got 3 hits but didn't wound.

The saurus finally joined the combat. The daemons gave my heart another hard time as first the soulgrinder tried taking the slann out using his claw attack (The slann failed his initiative so the claw attack hit automatically and would've done a str10 d6 wounds hit) but the slann passed his wardsave. The plaguebearers gave him another hard time, forcing 6 wounds on him. Forced to pass an above average number of saves again, he this time passed 5 of them!
The troglodon and saurus did a fair amount of damage to the plaguebearers, but sadly all good things come to an end when the soulgrinder used 5 thunderstomp hits to finally take down the slann. I had soaked so much damage with him though that the saurus and troglodon won the combat quite convincingly, by 6 or 7, so a number of plaguebearers disappeared and the soulgrinder died altogether.

Roughly the position of the game when we ended, but I snapped this pic when we were busy packing our stuff, so there were still about 20 plaguebearers with a herald. I did have them stuck in the rear & flank, so wouldn't have been able to reform until they dealt with either one of my units.

The slann kinda gave away the game, as he's worth so many points, and having a stegadon run away didn't help either, but the end result was significantly closer than I had expected it to be after 2 turns: Roughly 1255 to 1605; minor victory for the daemons when we ended the fight.
