The Fluff of my army isn't as detailed as some, but the general concept is that it's a clan of Dwarfs that protect a key pass leading into the mountains. They hold a tower that overlooks a fairly large clearing just beyond the mouth of this narrow pass. It's led by a Dwarf Lord, his Son, and a Runelord. They possess an Anvil of Doom.

Recently, my two friends and I decided to do a massive game. 6k of my Dwarfs versus 3k each of their Ogres and Tomb Kings. Our general theory for the fluff behind the battle is that one of my exploratory forces must have come back after looting the Tomb Kings of some of their precious treasure. The Tomb Kings (being unpalatable to the Ogres) hired the Ogres as Mercenaries to strike back at the Dwarfs.

In order to make a 6K list, I had to basically use every painted miniature I own (and 3 unpainted ones...yeah...I know). I don't have the exact lists now, but I'll try to remember them as best I can.

Montegue's Throng (still seeking a good Karak name)

Bangor Bloodrage, King of the Tower
Lord, Shieldbearers. MR of Steel, Resistance, Stone. Great Weapon. Master Rune of Spite.

Lord Finneus Thorne, Runelord on Anvil. MR of Balance, Rune of Spell Breaking, Rune of Spell Eating, Shield, Rune of Shielding

Harlan Bloodrage, Heir Apparent (Should the Thanes agree...)
Lord. Shield. Rune of Stone, Resistance, Preservation, MR of (Erm...the one that makes you strike at a S level that lets you wound on 2+).

Cog Bloodrage, Master Engineer.
M.E. Rune of Stone, Rune of Cleaving, Master Rune of Challenge

Gontrag the Elder
Demon Slayer
MR of Smiting, Rune of Cleaving, Rune of Speed

40 Longbeards, Full Command, Great Weapons. Rune of Courage, Ancestor Rune

40 Longbeards, Full Command, Shields. Rune of Battle, Ancestor Rune

38 Hammerers, Full Command, Master Rune of Grungni

25 Ironbreakers, Full Command, Rune of Battle, Ancestor Rune (2) (I think..might have been determination. I forget)

40 Warriors, Full Command, Great Weapons

20 Quarrelers, Full Command, Great Weapons

20 Thunderers, Shields, Full Command

30 Slayers, Full command.

10 Miners

Cannon, Burning, Forging, Reloading, Engineer

Cannon, Forging, Immolation, Engineer

Grudge Thrower, Accuracy, Penetration (2), Engineer

Organ Gun
Organ Gun

Gyrocopter

And here they are, deployed -

So, for deployment, for time's sake, we decided to go with the deployment rules for meeting engagement, sans reinforcement rules. So, I deployed all of my guys first, and then they went. I would go first unless they siezed the initiative. Made sense to us for the fluff of the scenario.

From left to right, I deployed my Great Weapon Warriors and Longbeards on the right flank.

In the center, I put the Thunderers in the tower, the Quarrelers, hammerers with my General, and the Ironbreakers along with them. I figured that gave the missile troops the most open field of fire. Hammerers and Ironbreakers together make for a decent combination. The MR of Challenge was in with the Quarrelers where the Engineer was hiding (within three inches of the GT, his primary job). The Cannons were tucked behind walls, and the Organ Guns were deployed to also provide a brutal field of fire in the center field. I was pretty happy with that. My Shieldbeards occupied some ruins that we decided were just a barricade.

On the left, I tossed my Slayers, the Slayer Lord of Character Destruction, and the Gyrocopter.

My opponents then deployed their army, which looked a bit like this -

Ogre Kingdoms

Tyrant with stuff, including the Sword of Striking. Ugh.

Slaughtermaster with the Sickle

Firebelly

Bruiser

gorger

8 or 9 ironguts with stuff
6 Maneaters with stuff
9 Bulls
2 Ironblasters
Six leadbelchers

3 units of Gnoblar trappers
3 Kitties he forgot to pay for (we realized that about three turns in. lulz).
Might be something else?

Tomb Kings

Level 4 on Nehek Lore
Level 2 on Death
Tomb King with Stuff
Herald with Stuff

40ish Tomb Guard, Full Command, Razor Banner
85 Skeletons
Unit of Horse Archers with the Death Mage
Altar Thingy
Skull Catapault with the nasty skulls
6 Chariots
3 Carrion
5 Horse Archers
Fighty Giant
Casty Giant

I think that's it.

Their deployment was crafty. The Ogre Kingdoms player did not want anything to do with the Slayer Lord and his axe of smiting. So, he deployed left and center. The Tomb King player went almost entirely left, with the Tomb Guard on the center side of his deployment.

My slayer lord's mission changed from "kill all the ogres till you die" to "kill the Death Mage as soon as dwarfenly possible"

Here's the Ogres (sans the Maneaters in the center). They deployed on my right flank using their gnoblars to tie up my two great weapon hordes, and focusing their power towards the center of the army. He put his Maneaters (poison and scout) in the center of the field, not really utilizing their scout ability lest they get shot turn one.

And his undead, inedible buddies -

And, the whole board before Turn 1 -

The Level 2 Death got both Purple Sun and the nasty sniper spell. This was a problem, and made the Slayer's mission even more critical. One good purple sun could make the game impossible for me to even be competitive. He had to die.

However, I was planning on having first go. I would use cannon fire and the Grudge Thrower to make absolutely sure the Ironblasters went down, if at all possible. I knew my one advantage was in shooting, and I needed to keep it. The Organ Guns would be key to weakening the Ironguts and Killing the Maneaters.

I knew the Slayers could handle any unit of Skeletons in combat, but that the unit of 85 would eventually take them out by sheer numbers. However, I also knew I could hold up a lot of the Tomb King advance and then try to focus my fire and effort on the Ogres. It was a good plan.

And like all good plans, it did not survive. They rolled a six, and stole the initiative. With a deep, grumbling sigh, I watched as the enemy advanced...

I should mention at this point that we came up with a special magic rule. They would get +2 power dice on their turn, and their maximum would go to 14. We knew how critical magic was to the Tomb Kings, and didn't want them screwed entirely by sharing a magic pool. At the end of the battle, we still felt like there wasn't enough dice for them to really play by. Not sure if there's a better solution or not to that, but it's we did.

Enemy, Turn 1

The Ogres advance, putting their units into place for future turns. The Gnoblars on the right arranged themselves to maximize the Dangerous Terrain pain and to maximize the delay they'd put my GWs through.

The Maneaters stepped into range, but out of range of my Thunderers in the tower. Kitties move into their chaff positions.

The other units advanced.

The Tomb Kings on the left flank advanced and arrayed themselves along the line of a building.

The Winds of Magic were strong. They had 11 dice to my 10.

The Casket failed to go off. The Slaughtermaster cast Trollguts on the Maneaters. That's going to be a problem. I failed to dispell it.

Tomb Kings cast Desert Wind, I stopped it.

Tooth Cracker went off on the Maneaters as well, and I couldn't stop it. Then the Firebelly tried to Flame Cage the Ironbreakers, but failed.

Shooting was absolutely devastating. Both of his Ironblasters killed my Organ Guns. I was going to rely on them to soften up the Guts, and they never even got to pull the trigger. Their death also very nearly paniced my Hammerers and the General off the board (rolled an 11, then a 10). Close call. Leadbelchers shot at the Longbeards with Great Weapons.

The skullapault scattered away, and a few slayers fall to Tomb King arrows.

Dwarf Turn 1 -

Movement -

I advance my Slayers on the left. I make it to where I only need an 8 on an Anvil Charge to get into that unit of Horse Archers and take out their tasty, tasty Death mage. on the Right, I advance my Great Weapon Hordes. I could, if needs be, use the anvil to work around the Gnoblars, but I can't do that and leave the death mage on the table. I decide I'm just going to run them over, and use the Anvil in the late game to bring them into the inevitable melee in the center of the board.

My central units stay put. My Gyrocopter moves up into position near the Chariots. This was fantastically stupid, as I would discover next turn. However, in my brain, they were there to keep the chariots off the Slayers. Not a good suggestion, Brain.

Anyway.

My shooting, unlike my opponents, is mostly useless. I take off some Maneaters from the middle group. My charge against the Death Mage company failed by 1! So, without any of my plans panning out, they go again. Ugh. Not looking good to the home team. The Gyro kills a couple of skeletons. Here's a shot of the Slayers and Gyro on the left -

Enemy turn 2

The Chariots charge the Gyro. I won't survive the impact hits. I decide to flee, and then subsequently blow the roll. Bye bye Gyro. I really suck with that thing. The Chariots move through and wind up almost in my backfield. I'm not terribly worried. I know if they try to approach the center on the flank, they won't get through the Longbeards unless they get there with support from his Giants.

Kitty charges the Slayers. He's going to die. We all agree that might have been a silly plan. The Giant attempts a very long flank charge on the Slayers, and fails. The Gorger fails to appear. At the end of the phase, my opponents kindly allow me to use the MR of Challenge (forgot about it) on the maneaters. They fail their long charge to the Quarrelers and SnS kills a single Maneater.

In their remaining moves, the tomb kings try to arrange themselves advantageously around the Slayers. The Carrion go right behind me, and my targeted cav unit winds up to my left. Unfortunately for them, the don't quite make it outside the Slayer Charge arc. A lucky break for me, in a game that's severely lacked them thus far.

Their Magic Phase was relatively weak. I dispelled the Casket, and then they cast Purple Sun. No Irrisitable Force, so I blow the Spell Eater. Sadly, it fails to kill the spell.

Their shooting phase was less stellar. Both Ironblasters failed to reach their targets (two double misfires on the bounce. Uncanny). The Skull Catapault scored a hit on the Shield Beards, but they endured entirely and took no wounds out of 12 possible.

Dwarf Turn 2

Slayers charge the Death Mage and his Cavalry, and get into combat. And the crowd goes wild.

The Great Weapons failed their charge on the Gnoblars. The Longbeards make it into their targeted Gnoblar unit. They are juuuust inside the second blocking unit, so their Overrun could potentially take them to the Leadbelchers beyond. This would be a good thing.

My shooting killed another Maneater (leaving more or less one left) and then killed one of the damnable Ironblasters.

The Anvil is used to slow down the long charge from the Ironguts.

Miners come on the field, and can charge the Altar next turn. I did not Anvil them in because I forgot about them until the end of movement.

In Close Combat, the Slayers do their job for the first time in my Dwarf playing careers. As planned, the Deamon Slayer blows up the Death Mage, and the rest of the boys chop up the other Skeletons and their undead mounts. I reform to generally face a couple of the Tomb King units, and move on to phase two of my cunning plan - Use the Deamon Slayer to murder the Hierophant in that big block of Skeleton Warriors.

The Longbeards take some wounds from the DT test, and then detonate the Gnoblars. They come up just short on their charge into the Leadbelchers.

My Shieldbeards reform into horde to block one of the Kitties from getting into my lines, and also to wait the inevitable arrival of the Chariots.

Here's the Slayer on their turn -

And here's them charging the archers

And the Aftermath -

And, over on the right -

So, after two turns, I have lost a lot of my central power, have engaged on both of my flanks, and have crippled one of the bigger threats to my army. Hopefully, that will make up for the loss of Organ guns and a first turn shooting advantage.

More to come....
