Chimera

We played a Battleline scenario. I let my opponent choose the table we would play on. He chose a table with no terrain! We deployed as you can see below.

Dwarfs Turn One: I won the roll for first turn, which was fortunate. Only my Cannons were in range of anything in my opponent's army. I targeted the Chimera, but between my two Cannons, I only managed a single wound! Wow, a lot of good getting the first turn did me...

Warriors of Chaos Turn One: My opponent moved up as fast as he could with everything but his Daemon Prince. No magic meant I had 75 points worth of runes on my Runesmith that were wasted. Oh, well. That's one of the risks you take when you include magic defense in your army, I guess.

D2: My Cannons once again both targeted the Chimera, putting a whole wound on it between them. My Organ Gun on my left flank misfired but only lost its shot. My Organ Gun on the right rolled 4 hits against the Chaos Warhounds, so I rerolled hoping to get a better roll, only to roll a misfire... My luck shooting wasn't holding up. The Thunderers on the left inflicted another wound on the Chimera, but failed to bring it down. My other unit of Thunderers put 2 wounds on a Skull Crusher.

WoC2: The Chimera charged my Cannon; I knew it wouldn't be long for the Old World. The Skull Crushers and Daemon Prince moved up as far as they could towards my line of Thunderers. The Chaos Warhounds moved up towards the artillery on my right flank, and the Warriors continued their plodding advance. The Chimera made short work of the Cannon, reforming to face my Organ Gun on that side of my position.

D3: With the Chaos menace bearing down on my determined Dawi, this was the last round of shooting they would get before combat was joined. My Organ Gun on the left flank started off with 6 hits on the Chimera, which finally succeeded in putting the critter down. The Organ Gun on my right flank rolled 4 hits. Not wanting to see a repeat of the previous round, I kept the roll and killed 4 Warhounds. My Cannon targeted the Skull Crushers from their flank, but a 2 for overshot and a 6 for bounce resulted in a single hit, dealing no wounds because I once more rolled a 1 to wound! My Thunderers all poured their shots into the Skull Crushers, dealing two wounds. I knew my opponent's next turn was going to hurt.

WoC3: the Skull Crushers and Daemon Prince charged my Thunderers on my left flank, and the Warhound charged my Organ Gun on my right flank. The Warriors advanced. Combat went as I anticipated, with my Veteran dying to the Daemon Prince (who got +1 WS for his slaughter) and the Skull Crushers killing only another 4 Dwarfs due to a ton of 1s to wound! Steadfast on a 9, the Dwarf Thunderers (who had passed Fear and Terror tests already) turned tail and ran right off the board. The Chaos forces reformed, the Daemon Prince facing my Organ Gun on the left and the Skull Crushers facing the flank of my remaining unit of Thunderers. The Warhound on the right flank killed one of the crew of the Organ Gun, whose other crewmen couldn't manage to kill a large and vicious puppy in return.

D4: I moved my Runesmith out of the unit of Thunderers past the Skull Crushers. I really couldn't say why. My Organ Gun on the left took a shot at the Daemon Prince, rolled a 10 for its number of hits, and took him down to a single remaining wound. My Cannon aimed at the Daemon Prince to try finishing him off, but rolled a 2 and a 4 for its overshot and bounce, failing to hit him. My Thunderers still had the Skull Crushers in their arc of fire and managed to gun them down! Perhaps the Dwarfs still had a chance?
[sharedmedia=gallery:images:13011]
WoC4: The Warriors charged the Thunderers, whose Stand-and-Shoot reaction succeeded in killing a whole Chaos Warrior... The Daemon Prince charged the Organ Gun on my left flank. In combat, my Organ gun crew on the right killed the remaining Warhound, while the Daemon Prince ate my left-most Organ Gun's crew for his supper. The Thunderers stood up to the insane number of attacks from the unit of Warriors, losing the Veteran and severl more Dwarfs but managing to hold on a Steadfast break test.
[sharedmedia=gallery:images:13012]
D5: My Organ Gun shot, dealing 4 wounds to the Daemon Prince. To my horror, he managed to roll three 6s and a 5 for his Ward Saves, keeping him alive. it was down to my Cannon to finish him off. I was not feelin particularly well-assured, considering their performance thus far in the game. My remaining Cannon took careful aim and finally knocked the Daemon Prince back into the Oblivion from whence he came! My Dwarfs died in droves in combat. When the dust settled, 2 Thunderers remained. They needed Insane Courage to hold... Which they managed to do!
[sharedmedia=gallery:images:13013]
WoC5: The Warriors made short work of my last two Thunderers and reformed to face my artillery.
[sharedmedia=gallery:images:13014]
D6: My Cannon used grapeshot to try knocking out a couple Chaos Warriors before shooting with my Organ Gun. It rolled 10 shots, 8 of which wounded, killing 8! Only 5 Warriors and the Exalted Hero remained. If my Organ Gun could manage a decent number of hits, my Dwarfs still had a chance at survival. I rolled the artillery die... A MISFIRE! I rolled a 2, and removed the Organ Gun from the table. My hopes were dashed against the craggy shores of disappointment...

WoC6: The remaining Warriors charged my Cannon, slaughtering the crew, and winning the game. I lost by about 300 points in the end.

I should first mention that this game was my opponent's first battle against a Dwarf army. We both thoroughly enjoyed the game and found the fast pace and one-dimensional nature of our respective armies quite entertaining. We appreciated how close the game was in the end, despite some bad luck on both of our parts (my opponent rolled a LOT of 1s, too--I'm seriously going to have to get myself some actual casino dice!). My opponent was a great guy to play against and really had a great attitude, which always helps.

I hope you enjoyed the report. May Valaya smile on your dice! Now to microwave my artillery die for its bad behavior...
See you all soon!
