Thank you to all the forum member posts that helped me compile my list and refine my tactics against the Tomb Kings so here is my first battle report for the site, hope it reads OK.

The Dwarf throng was as follows:

Lord on shield bearers with rune of stone, 2 x rune of iron, rune of preservation (266)
(as I was going against TK with KB the swap of 2 rune of warding to preservation seemed sensible)

Runelord with rune of stone, 2 x rune of spell breaking and MR of Balance (223)

Thane BSB, rune of parrying, rune of stone HW and Shield (123)

Grimm Burloksson (165)

18 Thunderers with musician, standard and shields (254)

34 Longbeards with HW and Shield, Strollaz Rune and full command (507)

20 Hammerers with full command, 2 x rune of sanctuary and rune of slowness (375)

20 Ironbreakers with Ironbeard and Standard and rune of slowness (335)

Grudge thrower with 2 x runes of penetrating (130)

Canon with rune of forging (145)

Organ Gun with rune of forging and rune of fire (155)

2 x gyrocopters, one with Vanguard and Brimstone Gun (180)

10 Rangers (140)

Total points 2998

Tomb Kings comprised:

Level 4 High Priest, Tomb Prince, 2 x Level 1 priests and Queen Kalida, Tomb Herald
30 Archers, 50 warriors with Spear and shield
8 horsemen, 3 chariots, 20 Tomb Guard, 3 Stalkers, 1 Warsphinx, 1 scorpion and 2 x swarms and casket of souls

Kalida deployed in the archers (of course) with one level 1 priest, a level 1 priest in the Tomb Guard and the other heroes all went into the block of skeleton warriors giving them the Tomb Prince's weapon skill of 4 and a pretty juicy front rank.
From my left to right his units were ranged as horsemen, skeleton warriors, archers, chariots and war sphinx with the casket peeping between the warriors and archers at the back. All the other units were EBtS.

Then from left to right I deployed 1 standard gyro, Ironbreakers, Longbeards, Hammerers, Cannon, with Organ Gun and Grudgethrower in a vertical line to limit space for stalkers to materialise and then Thunderers and the last Gyro with Vanguard and brimstone Gun. The Rangers scouted on my left flank to block/counter the horsemen vanguard move. Runelord went with the Ironbreakers and Lord and Thane in with the Hammerers. (both IB and Hammerers deployed 7 wide).

My Longbeards van guarded forward the full 12" in the centre of my line and the Gyro van guarded on the far right flank.

Tomb Kings deployed first and rolled a four, plus one - happily I rolled a 6 and stole first turn. Went slightly awry when I then rolled a 1 giving my lord hatred against Kalida as their general.

My first salvo of shots from the cannon bounced harmlessly just in front of the casket and the grudge thrower scattered well away towards the back. I chose to use Grimm's special range extension to the Thunderers who managed to pick off a handful of archers with the Organ gun adding to the tally.

My Rangers shot down two of the horsemen and the Gyro flew just outside the war sphinx arc and fired brimstone at the chariots, scoring a measly one wound.

Their turn 1 saw the Warsphinx turn and blow some hot breath harmlessly at my Gyro, magic was weak and the skeletons shuffled forward healing a few archers and the wound on the chariot, the archers from these units then shot down four long beards.

Turn two saw the Longbeards surge forward and charge into the Skeleton warriors, the Gyro dive bombed the chariots (taking one out) and the other Gyro flew back to protect the back of the war machines from the potential arrival of reinforcements.

The long beards directed 9 attacks at the level four priest, scoring only two wounds, which he promptly saved. The other attacks on the Tomb Prince went equally poorly but they managed to knock down enough warriors in the unit to win combat and another four skeletons crumbled.

Turn two magic was heavier and I forgot MRoB (doh). The Lvl 4 priest had (luckily for me) deployed too far from the archers to give them mighty smiting unless fully powered and I dispelled the smiting on the warriors (just) and used my dispel scroll to get rid of desiccation but failed the eating roll. The other spells failed to cast. The skeleton horsemen charged the Rangers, were shot down to 2 riders for their trouble and then they were smashed with great weapons for barely a ruffled hair.

The Stalkers appeared just within 8" of the rear of my hammerers and the nasty gaze took out a couple. Shooting saw the hammerers lose another 2 and the other skeletons shuffled forward. Happily the swarms and scorpion stayed in the sand. The Tomb Guard flank charged the Longbeards exposing their flank to the Hammerers. Amazingly the T5 really held up well and this time I directed fewer attacks at the Lvl 4, which he saved but I wiped out 10 skeletons and a couple of TG to win combat by 4. The Longbeards were being whittled down though and needed reinforcing especially after losing the champion to a Tomb Prince challenge.

Turn three saw the Ironbreakers fail their charge of just 10" and the walked forward 4. The Hammerers managed to flank charge the TG and escape the gaze of the stalkers. The rangers thought about flank charging the skeleton warriors but managed snake eyes.

The Cannon boomed and took out the casket, which blew up killing skeleton archers and Longbeards in equal measure. The grudge thrower took the war sphinx down to one wound (the re-roll to wound and str 10 really helped here) and the Organ Gun and the extended range Thunderers took out more archers. The gyro steamed a wound off the stalkers and moved to block their charge against the war machines. The other gyro bombed the last remaining chariot but failed to wound.

There was a nasty moment when the Dwarf Lord almost failed his 2+ ward against killing blow but then I realised that not all six of the TG could attack him from a flank charge, the re-rolled hits were lighter and easily saved. The melee in the middle saw the hammerers and lord inflict big losses on the TG and the Longbeards, despite being whittled down, managed to draw combat with the warriors. The choice of HW and Shield for the Longbeards was really paying dividends in this fight.

Turn three for the TK was mercifully light on magic and I remembered the MRoB to steal a dice and dispelled what I needed and, although the righteous smiting was successful on the warriors, their attacks were so numerous but pathetic that only four Longbeards fell. The skeleton archers flank charged the hammerers and Kalida challenged my dwarf Lord, scratching him for 1 wound when she blew up in a flurry of axe blows. The swarm turned up near the cannon.

The stalkers were obviously deterred by the Gyro and chose instead to charge the rear of the hammerers, who promptly turned and smacked them hard bringing the unit down to one on 1 wound for two hammerers lost for their failure to wear gromril armour like any sensible Dwarf should.

Turn four saw the Ironbreakers stroll forward once more, content to see their Longbeard brethren be beaten down to less than a full rank but with the TG down to their last man plus the Lvl 1 priest, the Hammerers were able to smash the remaining stalker and remainder of the skeleton archers and then reform after combat to face the skeleton warriors flank. Combat res saw the unstable priest and final TG crumble. The Thunderers benefitted from Grimm's superior volley and shot down the Warsphinx before he made it through some trees. Someone managed to shoot down the last remaining chariot, which was either a Gyro dive bomb or brimstone gun.

Turn four for the TK saw the tomb swarms overrun cannon, and the Grudgethrower crew fled in panic. Luckily Grimm stood in their way of a flank charge into the Thunderers. The TKs got righteous smiting off and the warriors would be getting nearly fifty attacks until the next TK magic phase.

Turn five and the Ironbreakers deigned to enter combat and engage the skeleton warriors. Heartened by this sign of courage the Hammerers charged into the warrior flank and, despite the whirl of skeleton spears, the 3+, 5+ save for the Ironbreakers meant only one unsaved wound. The combined blows from the last four Longbeards, Hammerers and Ironbreakers finally doing enough damage to win combat by a reasonable margin and then we were down to a few TK heroes and a handful of warriors.

In return the Swarms defeated the Organ Gun Crew and despite between down to one base, Grimm fled in terror only to be overtaken by the swarm, which then ran into the Gyro and the Thunderers to be crushed under hob booted heel.

With just a few dusty old bones left standing and a scorpion miles from combat, the Tomb Kings conceded. The Longbeards kept their points by a doughty 4 warriors, there was 1 dead Ironbreaker and 8 dead Hammerers. The gyros hadn't even suffered a small tear in their fuselage and the rangers hadn't broken a sweat. The war machine crews were all lost, but earned their points by destroying the casket and sphinx. Sad to see Grimm lost but otherwise a resounding victory for the Dwarves.
