A bit worried at the start, realised I forgot shields for the Hammerers but we would see.

Deployment:

Pre game, both sides used Vanguard to push their right flank forwards. The Empire pushed Pistoliers and Out Riders, and I pushed foward 2 units of Hammerers and Longbeards.

Turn 1:

Dwarfs;

The Lord and his hammerers moved forwards, the lord leaving the woods which would react to magic, and the long beards securing his flank. The hammerers on the far right held their position to wait for support, and the Iron Breakers marched forward to provide it. A bad start, the wood was carnivorous and killed 5 as they moved forwards. The gyrocopter moved up behind the long beards.

The shooting phase was awful. The cannon, organ gun, grudge thrower all missed, leaving the empire artillary intact. The quarrellers hit the Empire Crossbowmen multiple times but had apparently forgotten to sharpen them. That was pretty much it.

We had the first go, so no combat.

Empire:

The demi-gryph nights charged the hammerers, as did the Reichsguard Knights. The Outriders and the Pistoliers moved forwards. The Empire Crossbows marched as well. The free company, and detachments shuffled forwards. Their shooting was also dismal, accounting for 3 quarrellers.

The magic phase was shut down, so on to combat. The Hammerers fought bravely, the Gate Keeper challenged the empire general but was cut down, as were two of his fellows. They killed one rider and wounded another. With banners and ranks, and the empire charge it was a tie.

Turn 2:

Dwarfs;

The Lord and his hammerers charged the free companies detachment of halberdiers, and the longbeards charged the flank. The Iron Breakers charged the Knights, losing another 3 of their number on the way in. The quarrellers marched forwards. The gyrocopter flew over the sharpshooters at the back, but did nothing much with its dive bomb.

A better shooting phase, the organ gun opened up an engineer assisted volley of 20 shots into the pistoliers avenging the 3 quarrellers in a shower of gore. The cannon scored a direct hit on its empire counter part taking out two crossbows on the way through, though it struck the gun frame without causing damage. The grudge thrower missed again. The thunderers fired at the Empire crossbows but the cover protected them.

In combat the longbeards, lord and hammerers wiped out the detachment, so just the champion remained. (I forgot the shield bearer attacks) and as the unit was stubborn, it held. This point may have turned the game as otherwise the longbeards could have overrun into the free company flank.

The Ironbreakers turned the combat on the right. The demi gryphs were reduced to one remaining, and fled, though the knights held. The Empire lances and dwarf charge having lost momentum, thus began the grind.

Empire;

The Demigryph rallied.

The free company charged the hammerer flank. Its other detachment, skirmishing bowmen moved forwards. The outriders moved forwards.

Magic was slightly better for the empire this turn, they managed to get a combat ward in place for the free company facing the lord.

Between the bowmen skirmishers and crossbowmen, the empire shot one thunderer. The Long gunners fired point blank at the long beards, killing no one as the banner of grungi did its work. The cannon shot that passed through the unit also only killed 3, 2 more saved by the warding runes.

Combat was another win for the dwarfs, accounting for an Empire Priest, but the unit held. In the centre, the hammerers made way for the lord to join the thane with the BSB on the flank. At the empire side, the witch hunter pressed forward to accuse the BSB. In single combat, the lord cut down the brave company champion, the witch hunter managed to wound the BSB, but his accomplaces did nothing. In return the BSB also wounded the witch hunter. To the front the hammerers and longbeards crushed the halberdier champion without reply as he fumbled his attacks, and the unit reformed to assist the lord. The longbeards reformed to face the long gunners at point blank.

Turn 3:

Dwarfs;

With the centre in combat, the quarrellers charged the skirmishing bowmen harrassing the thunderers, the quarrellers redirected onto the crossbowmen but halted in on their way through the ruins under heavy fire.

The longbeards charged the long gunners, and the gyrocopter charged the fleeing bowmen. The tried to run on, but, exhausted were caught and killed. Seeing them cut down, the Empire mortar crew went into hiding, and crossbowmen held only due to the sight of the battle standard.

With the bowmen gone, the thunderers fired on the crossbowmen, killing 2. The cannon missed an opportunity to kill the demigryph knight. This was a bad mistake, the last it would in fact make. It opted to try and fell the Empire mage and cannon, however the mage was saved by her unit, and the shot fell short of the empire cannon. 2 more empire crossbows dead. The grudge thrower with its runes for accuracy missed again. The organ gun fired at the out riders as the closest threat, killing 3.

On the flank, combat dragged on as two S4 well armoured units did little. In the centre, the Lord bellowed a new challenge, this time the witch hunter responded, and was promptly cut down. The empire won combat solidly, but the hammerers couldnt care less.

The empire men were quicker than the dwarfs, but achieved little before losing 8 out of 10 troops, the last two fleeing never to be seen again. The longbeards reformed again, this time to face the free company in support of the lord. The grinder on my right flank continued.

Empire:

The mortar rallied.

The rallied demigryph charged back into the hammerers. The hand gunners on my left wheeled to threaten the quarreller flank. The pegasus knight who had so far done nothing charged the cannon.

The magic phase remained locked down, the empire maintaining the combat ward on the free company with liberal use of irresistible force, but getting nothing else through.

The outriders gunned down the enginner and wounded the organ gun. The cannon loaded grape shot and blew the gyrocopter from the sky.

With no honour coming from the humans, the lord called out another challenge. The human BSB stepped forward and did nothing but was wounded for his trouble. The fight continued.

The pegasus knight killed 2 crew, but the cannon held on.

Turn 4:

Dwarfs;

The longbeards piled into the centre fight. The Quarrellers charged the Empire Crossbows. The Thunderers reformed to combat formation and moved forwards.

The organ gun cut down the remaining outriders in retalliation for their assassination of the master engineer. The catapult missed. Again.

The combat on the right began to fail. The hammerers were wiped out but the iron breakers were holding on. In the centre, the ongoing combat ward held the free company together under the onslaught of dwarfen great weapons rising and falling. The lord did however finish off the BSB.

On the left now, the empire crossbows vastly outnumbered the dwarf quarrellers 19 to 6, but with a limited front the combat was heavily in the dwarfs favour. They fled and were persued, but not caught. The 3 surviving Quarrellers prepared to chase them down and on, into the Empire warmachines. The pegasus finished off the cannon.

Empire;

The crossbowmen rallied, but there were only 8 left guarding the mage.

The hand gunnerers were left out of position so turned around to move centrally.

The pegasus charged the wounded organ gun.
The demi gryph charged the ironbreaker flank.

The magic phase was interesting. The shadow mage managed to reduce the long beard toughness by 3 on irresistable force, but also forgot that spell and another.

The only unengaged dwarf units were the Quarrellers and the grudge thrower. The quarrellers were too close for the mortar, so it targeted the grudge thrower but missed. The cannon fired a second 10 shots of grape, this time straight through the empire crossbowmen into the quarrellers wiping them out.

The knights were down to just a Knight Champion escourting a general of the empire, the remaining demi gryph was wounded and alone, but the iron breakers eventually fled and were cut down. The knights continued into the wood that proved so deadly to the iron breakers but made it unscathed. In the centre, the remaining hammerers were wiped out and a few longbeards as the free company made use of their weakened opponents. Despite no longer being stubborn, the lord and BSB remained thanks to the BSB.

The pegasus killed the organ gun.

Turn 5:

Dwarfs;

The thunderers charged the free company flank.

The magic phase served only to dispel the weakness on the longbeards.

The grudge thrower finally hit something, dropping a rock on the General of the Empire, however it bounced harmlessly off his ward.

Combat continued, now the hammerers were gone, the empire turned on the BSB cutting him down. On hearing a challenge from the lord, the Warrior Priest who led the army ran to the back of the unit in fear, not wanting to follow the champion, which hunter and captain with the battle stanard into death.

Empire;

The pegasus and knight/ general charged the grudge thrower, the general wounding himself in the woods.

The hand gunners and crossbowmen formed up.

The Demi Gryph failed to charge the longbeards.

Finally a break in the magic phase, low dice and the combat ward did not go off on IF. It was promptly dispelled. There was nothing out of combat to shoot, so that didnt happen. Without the ward, the free company started to crumble, but crown of command kept them fighting.

The grudge thrower, it held off the combined attentions of a pegasus knight, a reiksguard knight and empire general. That ensured another turn of combat.

Turn 6:

Dwarfs;

Continued exploitation of the lack of combat ward reduced the free company to 4, with the Grand Theologan still hiding at the back. Somehow, the grudge throeer crew held on, denying their opponants a full turn 6.

Empire;

The demigryph charged the longbeard rear.

The priest was again stopped from casting the combat ward.

The pegasus knight, general and knight finally killed the grudge thrower.

The thunderers, lord and longbeards wiped out the remaining free company, the stubborn warriorpriest was now alone. The demigryph did kill one longbeard, but still fled.

Battle over:

Tough game, but a defeat of about 1000 points. The demigryph and lone knight were worth about 800, and the theologan about to be stomped a good number, but I was out of turns. Had the game finished, the main threat remaining was the cannon. The melee unit had little left for the lord and his new hammerers (the undaunted and newly honoured longbeards) to fear.
