Game 1 versus Ogre Kingdoms
Army: 13 Ironguts, 2 units of 6 leadbelchers, level 4, BSB, 3 mournfang, 2 ironblasters.

Terrain: For terrain in this battle we had a long piece of impassable terain which bisected his deployment zone in half. I had a hill in my deployment zone located centrally which I deployed on.

Deployment: He deployed one ironblaster on each side, one unit of leadbelchers on each side, the Gutstar on my left and the mournfang on my right. A classic anti-dwarf deployment of “put the fast caav on the flank” which we all should prepare for.

The Scenario: Shooting in this scenario was limited to 24”, all fliers took dangerous terrain tests when they wanted to move.

The Game: I won the roll to go first, did not roll significant hatred. Since shooting was limited I moved up with my blocks and missed an Ironblaster with my cannon. In his subsequent turns he proceeded to stay just in 24” and pepper my blocks with Leadbelcher fire. His Ironblasters also tried to take out my warmachines and succeeded by the end of the game in getting an organ gun and a cannon. The Gutstar ended up getting into the Hammerer block. I lost the unit but picked up his General and BSB which more than made up for their points. The mournfang failed a charge which put them in range of the Organ Guns which destroyed the unit. During the battle we found out his unit was too large for the comp (largest unit could not be more than double the points of th next largest unit) so the leadbelchers combined to make a larger unit. He shot my units with all he could but could not get the blocks down enough to earn any points.

The game ended in an 11 draw with him picking up the hammerers, some artillery and the gyro and me getting his characters, an ironblaster and the mournfang. 300 point win for me but in this comp was still a draw. With bonus points between us that left it at a 11-11.

Game 2 versus Empire

Army: Lore of Light, 2 wizards, one pegasus captain, 2 small knight units, cannon, one large knight bus, 2 units of demigryphs.

Terrain: 2 forests and a building in his deloyment zone, one hill in mine. Middle was open and clear.

Deployment: My opponent deployed his larger Demi unit across from my Longbeards on the right. His Knight bus set up next to them on my left. On the other side of the building were the two small knight units and the smaller Demi unit. The pegasus captain deployed in the large demi unit.

The Scenario: 4 objectives spread across the center line to grab.

The Game: I won the roll to go first and did not roll significant hatred. My first turn I was able to shoot off his cannon and do a couple wounds to the large demigryph unit. My blocks moved up and I made a crucial mistake. I completely forgot in my turn to move the gyro to block off a charge from one of those units. My strategy was to make sure only one unit got to me (two if he made a long charge) and redirect the other one with a gyro. Unfortunately I left the gyro back and got double charged by a unit of chaff knights and the knight bus. Large Demis moved up against my Longbeards. We got into combat and the hammerers were depleted but held. Relief came the next turn when the Shieldbeards flanked the demis. Shooting took care of the chaff units but was otherwise uneventful this game. All of the units piled into the middle and by the end of it the characters in the knight bus and the large demis were alive. My hammerers and my shieldbeard unit were dead. It ended up being a 15-9 win for him because all of my artillery and my Longbeard block was still alive. Last turn I killed his level 4 to earn back some points with the Organ Guns. 11-9 loss for me, plus he captured enough VP’s to earn him up to 15. Voted my favorite opponent, great guy and a fun game with lots of back and forth smashing. Silly move to not use the gyro when I should have, and it cost me the game. Two in my list will be the standard for me, but to cut down to 2400 was too hard.

Game 3 versus High Elves
Army: 22 White Lion BotWD block, level 4 on High, combat noble, BSB, unit of 24 Phoenix Guard, 2 bolt throwers, Frostheart Phoenix, 3 units of Reavers.

Terrain: Two hills facing each other with a giant building in between. I messed up in the terrain phase. Since we scattered our own terrainI should have moved the second building towards a corner to give myself line of sight. I was playing these games just getting over a sinus infection and it was silly oversights such as terrain placement and redirecting which put me at a disadvantage.

Deployment: I rallied around my hill in the center with him doing the same. His bolt throwers went on the hill and the Phoenix went behind the house. Both the Phoenix Guard and the White Lions deployed on the same flank. My hammerers were on the left facing his two combat blocks and my Longbeards deployed to the right.

Scenario: Blood and Glory with battleline deployment. Breaking earned extra VP’s.

The Game: My plan in this game was to redirect and tie up the White Lions with the hammerers while my Longbeards flanked him around the house. If the Phoenix Guard got through I knew my bunker could hold them up for a little bit since the PG would only be wounding me on a 4+ and me getting a 6+ 5++. Without many targets to shoot at first turn I took out one of his bolt throwers the first time and cleared some of his Reavers. My hammerers moved up to set the trap and the Longbeards gunned forward along the right side of the building to flush out the Phoenix. My gyro flew up behind the building to get ready to redirect and spray the Lions. My opponent took the bait and moved up against the blocks with the Phoenix Guard stuck behind the White Lions. The Frostheart repostured itself away from the Longbeards and his shooting accomplished nothing. In my next turn the gyro went to spray the White Lions and redirect the Phoenix Guard. Shooting killed the last of his cavalry and bolt thrower. In his turn he chargered the full hammerers with his white lions (I had killed 6 the previous turn) and I had line of sight to smash into them with my Longbeards from around the building then next turn and overrun into the Phoenix Guard. Unfortunately, this was just one of those games where you lose by one and fail your leadership 9 rerollable…They broke, got run down and the Longbeards had to turn around to gun it back to the artillery to defende them. The Shieldbeards moved up to hold the phoenix guard up and protect the artillery. The phoenix could see the shieldbeard by juuussssstttt a smidge around the buildin and got a good flank charge. The beards broke and we ended the game with just an organ gun and GT left. 0-20 major loss for me. Yikes! Terrain and failing a rerollable 9 really messed me up this round, but my opponent was pretty good. They have an awesome one day event in Buffalo, NY coming up called the Beef and Wing Challeng. Sounds delicious enough to go to…Next day I would need some serious redemption to get back in the running! Luckily we had tons of cold “beverages”, poker, board games and delicious lasagna to soothe our woes…well mostly just mine and one other from our group. Everyone else was doing really, really well.

Game 4 versus Dark Elves
Army: Mallus Darkblade, Cold One bus, two units of spearmen, bolt thrower, Dark Rider chaff, level two on Dark, unit of Darkshards, two cold one chariots.

Deployment: Same as most others. Hill on my side and terrain which bissected his army. He set up Mallus across from my left flank. I placed both combat units towards the left

Scenario: “Spells and curses”- three spells you can cast, but you cannot cast two more than your opponent. You can make a one turn storm banner, discard a charge die and force reroll with no channels on magic phase. Both of us did nt choose to use any during our game as using them could take points away based on if your opponents used them too.

Game: This game just went really well for me. I sent my hammerers and Longbeards to deal with his Cold Ones and Spearmen on my left flank and relied on my shooting to hold down the right flank. Turn 2 my Hammerers charged the cold ones and broke the unit. Longbeards ate spearmen when he couldn’t get magic off. Shooting as expected was able to contain the chaff units headed my way. Good tactic: If you know a flank can be handled by shooting ditch it and send your unit over to deal with the other. A lot of people like to put buildings and impassable terrain in their deployment zones but it ends up making their further flank take longer to get to you.

Game 5 versus Empire

Army: Light Council, Celestial Hurricanum, two units of 40-50 Halberdiers, two units of 4 demis, steam tank, cannon, two small archer detachments.

Deployment: Being mindful of the speed of the demis I deployed more towards a corner on top of a hill this time. He placed his army directly across from mine with the demis facing the longbeards on my right, the steam tank and a unit of halbediers in the middle. He chose the open terrain to move towards me more quickly.

Scenario: Sacrifices. Before the game each player HAD to sacrifice between 1-3 units or characters. If you only sacrificed one and got a major win then you lost a battle point. Units you sacrificed gave you half their VP’s and did not give opponents any VPs. Since we were both going for major wins on a mid table we both got rid of two. He axed his archer detachments (jealous) while I struggled with my choices. I needed my OG’s to help with the heavy armour and the ME’s had been invaluable in chaffing late in my games. I finally gave up my shieldbeard unit and my gyro. No redirectors or bunker for me, this would be a slugfest. I need all of my units to make my list work and I was really nervous going in.

The Game: This time I finally rolled Hatred! However, he got the roll to go first and pushed it all forward. He got irresistable Net off on my Organ Gun and his cannon missed mine. Steam Tank chugged forward as it always does and rolled really high. In my turn I attempted to charge to Stank with my longbeard block but missed by an inch. The hammerers scooted and pivoted around to reinforce the middle. On his turn the Stank barrelled into the Longbeards and a Halbedier block moved forward to chaff up my hammerers. The Stank did a couple of wounds and I did two wounds back. Magic was really tough this game since Lore of Light has such a low casting value and his chariot kept flinging bound bolt thrower shots at me. On my turn I charged the halbediers and they held with steadfast. The Lonbeards did two more wounds to the Stank and shooting finished off a unit of Demis. My grudgethrower shot at the second unit of Demis and missed….and redirected on top of his Steam Tank. It did 5 wounds! On his turn I burned my last scroll stopping Speed of Light of the second unit of Demis who got a flank charge on my Longbeards. Combat I finished off the Halbediers with my Hammerers who broke and I reformed to face the steam tank. The Longbeards held. On my turn I charged the flank of the steam tank. The Longbeards were killed down to one man left, the steamtank died and the demis broke. My hammerers reformed to face the Halbediers and the unit with just the Longbeard Standard Bearer, my BSB and General limped away. On his turn his 40+ unit of Halbediers charged into the hammerers. Could not stop any magic and he got off Timewarp and Warrior Priest rerolls to wound. Killed my Hammerers to the man before I got a chance to strike back. Yikes. Game ended with me getting max points for my Longbeards with one model still left alive and my general and BSB still kicking. Only one piece of artillery was dead from his cannon. I had claimed both demis, his BSB and the Steam Tank. I didn’t really bother shooting at the Hurricanum since in this comp cannons only hit chariot riders on a 6+. Won the game 13-11 after bonus points.

Overall Da Boyz and 2014 GT Synopsis:

So I finished this tournament 22/54. Not a terrible showing but didn’t really help my Master’s ranking for the Northeast. I made some pretty bad judgement calls my second and third games which cost me some momentum but I was able to bounce back with 2 wins on day 2. Getting over a sinus infection didn’t really help my tactics but luckily the beer and home cooked food made up the difference. Socially Da Boyz is the best GT with giant house units to rent for cheap with full kitchens to cook from. The cooking helps keep the cost down and adds to the team bonding element.
From a Dwarfs perspective the first and last scenario were particularly game changing for me. The first one for obvious reasons, but the second because I did not really have any units I wanted to sacrifice. Giving up my bunker and one redirector was tricky and I could’ve used to chaff up one of my flanks to give the Longbeards or Hammerers a breather for a round. Still, no sportsmanship complaints and all of my opponents were very friendly.

Despite a mediocre showing at the last qualifier for the NE Master’s I managed to stay in the running! One person passed ahead of me and I finished 9th out of 10. I plan on bringing Dwarfs to the United States Masters and will appreciate any and all tactics and pointers from our community. My top scores were 7th at Unplugged, 4th at Crossroads Spring and 9th at Crossroads Fall (Best General). I may be off on some of those placings but since they were very high attendance they resulted in high scores. The Master’s falls under school vacation from work so I wanted to try my best to get in since I can actually go this year. I can honestly say all of the GT’s in the NE I attended (Templecon, Crossroads Spring, Bragging Rights, Unplugged, Crossroads Fall and Da Boyz) were extremely well run and I highly recommend them all. In future years I’m going to have to choose a couple of these and I have no idea which ones I will cut since they are all amazing. I brought the Dwarfs to every GT except one (Templecon/Onslaught in Feb) and plan on bringing some Swordthain ambush lists in 2015 along with a Khorne/Tzentch monster mash army I’ve been painting. Thank you everyone for the tactics and support and for having the best community on the Interwebs.
