I attended my third Crossroads Fall GT in Elmira New York. I list this as one of my favorite GT’s of all time and I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone interested in a smoothly run GT with some of the nicest people in Warhammer. Around 100 people attended the event with some pretty hefty competition including TEAM USA ETC and many previous winners of NE GT's. I tried to post pictures from my Word document but it doesn't seem to be showing up. Anyone know how to do it?

My List (variation of one I used before in Stymie's Dwarf List Builds):

Runesmith: General, stone, shield, spellbreaking x2, furnace.
Runesmith: stone, shield, spellbreaking x2, rune of fire.
Master Engineer: pistol
Master Engineer
Thane: BSB, shield, Master Rune of Grungi
35 Longbeards: Great Weapons, Stoicism, musician and standard.
15 Quarrellers: Great Weapons, musician and standard.
30 Hammerers: 2x Rune of Slowness, musician and standard.
Gyrocopter
Cannon: Forging, Fire
Grudgethrower: Accuracy, Forging, Penetrating
Organ Gun: Accuracy, fire
Organ Gun: Accuracy

Game 1: High Elves

My opponent had a pretty standard list for High Elves: 20 silver helms, 20 archers, Book of Hoeth, 38 BotWD White Lions, 3 Bolt Throwers and some scouts. Level 4 was on High Magic and he had a Loremaster as well. The objective of this scenario was to select three “targets of opportunity” from your opponents army. Each pick had to be from a different slot (Heroes, Rare, Core etc) and destroying the unit earned VP’s and a battle point. I chose a bolt thrower, the Silver Helm bus and his BSB. He chose the quarrellers, an Organ Gun and the gyrocopter. On the first turn he moved up all of his units and tried for the normal magic missiles against the warmachines and fiery conflagration against one of my units. Nothing was able to get off except Ice Shard Blizzard on the silver helms. He put the Silver Helm bus just outside a forest and buffed it. If I charged it I would lose my ranks and I would be harder to hit with his increased weapon skill. On my turn the Hammerers charged the bus, warmachines killed his bolt throwers and longbeards moved up aggressively. With some great rolling the Hammerers were able to wipe the bus out in one round.

My opponent admitted to me that he plays against Dwarfs frequently and forgets they move forward too. The rest of the game consisted of my blocks deleting his archers and then boxing in the White Lions. The Gyrocopter was the MVP killing over 15 white lions with the steam template and killing a bolt thrower in close combat. My opponent was an incredibly nice gentlemen and was excited to play as it was his first GT. I gave him a pair of my team dice and was able to talk with him and his father later that evening about some great list builds for his next GT. Overall I ended up getting all three of his Targets and he destroyed none of mine so with max points off to the top tables I go.

Win 24-0
Game 2 vs. Vampire Counts
To put this game into perspective the gentleman I played has been to three GT’s. At every GT he has placed in the top 25%. Also at every GT by some weird twist of fate he and I have fought. The first GT he was wiping the floor with me before he cascaded his vampire lord into the warp on two dice which gave me a minor win. At the Unplugged GT this summer we fought on table 5 round 5 and the Hammerers missed killing the Vamp Lord by one wound! Double Crypt Horrors and purple suns killed the rest giving him a 19-5 win. To set the stage: Here was my arch nemesis and it was time to settle this grudge once and for all. His list had a Level 4 on vamps, vamp BSB, Blender Lord, double crypt horrors, 3 units of zombies, skeleton bunker and banshees. The scenario was Blood and Glory with VPs and BPs added for breaking fortitude. Once again, did not roll army wide hatred…I got first turn and shooting did not do much save for clear some dire wolves and thin a crypt horror unit by 2 models. He went next and made some great moved and positioning forward. Danse Macabre further helped move a crypt horror unit down the flank. All three units of fellbats moved up to charge warmachines the next turn and hold them. Thinngs weren’t looking so hot for the Dwarfs at the moment. On my turn I charged the crypt horrors and though about some target priority. I took a throwaway lob shot at the Skeleton bunker…failed his lookout sir on his Lord…failed his ward save…4 wounds. WOW. Kobe!!!! He had another Vampire so this was not the end of the game by any means but it did help by clearing out the fellbat units and deplete the flanking units of Danse Macabre Horrors. The game continued with aggressive moving and combats.
On the last turn he purple sunned my Longbeard block after splitting his characters and hiding behind impassable terrain. The resulting miscast killed more longbeards and he was able to scream off my BSB. I broke him first and was awarded with bonus VPs but losing my Longbeard block swung the game from max battle points to a major win. Just goes to show it aint over until it’s over and quitting early will almost always cost you VPs. One of my all-time favorite people to play against and a grudge settled…until next time we play and the pattern continues with him smashing my Dorfs.
Win 17-7

Game 3 vs. Warriors of Chaos

To preface this game I played against one of the nicest people I have met outside of the actual game. We found out we were both teachers and going back for Masters in Special Education. Great chap and has been to a good number of GT’s before. Given how fast WoC are I was really worried about this matchup. My opponent wanted to corner deploy against me but decided against it knowing he had a lot of targets and some lethal magic. In his list he had the Chaos Disc Lord with the amazing ward save, a marauder block, chimera, skullcrushers, an assortment of chariots, a hellcannon, a mounted combat Lord and finally Throgg, King of Trolls with a huge troll block. Magic was tzeentch and metal I believe. Gulp. He won turn one and moved up as fast as he could against me on one flank. There was a building dividing his force so he flanked me to my left and set up across from me with his trolls. However, his Troll block he had set up right across from me he held back out of range of the Organ Guns. I was really confused by this strategy as he had basically given me one side to focus fire against while holding back with one of the most dangerous combat units in the game. The skullcrusher unit went to grab an objective to move off the table for victory points. My first organ gun wounded his Disc Lord about 6 times and I believe he rolled something like 3 2’s on his ward saves. The units all moved up towards him except for the quarrellers with the BSb who hung back to give the ward save against the Tzeentch magic missiles and Hellcannon anti-battery fire. The rest of the shooting proceeded to kill the chimera and a chariot. On his turn his magic was shut down (by his rolls, not mine) and he began to feel frustrated. He moved forward again, failed a charge on the Longbeards and hid some key units behind a building.
On my turn my cannon one-shotted his hellcannon. At that point he conceded the game out of frustration. This was the first time I have ever had a game conceded against me and I was a little taken aback by it. He also dinged me on sports by giving me a middle score which was effectively 2 points off of your overall score. We were on a high table so I can understand the pressure and frustration can get to you. In an ironic twist I edged him out by 2 battle points overall. If he had kept playing and ran the objective off that would have been at least two points right there. Still, to each their own. Tomorrow was table 1 vs. WoC again!
Win 23-0

Game 4 vs. Warriors of Chaos

My opponent here ran a similar list to my previous opponent except with a daemon prince in place of the disc lords and more chariots. The Daemon Prince had Slaanesh and got Cacophonic Choir. Hooray…I had not previously castled in any of my games but in this game I made sure to keep my war machines no more than 7 ½ inches up so he could not sprint forward and Caco-bomb them. He won first turn and moved up. Magic did nothing and he was out of range for CC. My turn I debated charging the daemon prince but since it had all of the toys on it I decided against it. Shooting did some wounds to it but ultimately it did not kill it.
On his turn he charged my Quarrellers block and IF’d cacophonic choir. Quarrellers broke but he missed the overrun into my hammerers. Warmachines lived but could not shoot. My hammerers killed a chimera in close combat and reformed to face the Prince. No shooting due to CC but my cannon (which was out of range but had flaming attacks) one shotted a Hellcannon again! Hallelujah! The game proceeded with me getting IF CC again Both times he rolled a 4, both times he did not go in to the warp. The Daemon Prince killed the longbeards and was finally able to be shot at. It was on his last 2+ ward save that my organ gun with the flaming runes was finally able to do the last wound before he disappeared into overrunning into my artillery for the rest of the game. All that was left was my artillery and an engineer and he had half a unit of skullcrushers and his Tzeentch bunker. Tremendous opponent with a scary list. A grudge was made, but this one will involve some scotch and a cigar the next time we meet! Next up Orcs!
Loss 17-5

Game 5 vs. Orcs and Goblins
This was by far one of the best games of Warhammer I have ever played. First off my opponent had the best painted Orcs and Goblins army I have ever seen, he had been to Masters previously and is one of the best painters in New England in my opinion. He won my vote for best painting players choice and was a great opponent both with his demeanor and his great generalship. He had a standard O&G list with artillery, an arachnarok, Savage Ork bunker and big troll unit. This one was a knock out drag out slugfest. Highlight of the game was when my longbeards first got into combat with his bunker. I wanted to do as many wounds as possible to the unit but on a whim I threw 4 dice to kill his BSB, even though his unit was stubborn 10. He looked pretty sad after and I was confused. I asked him about it after the combat and he said that he had a magic banner on his BSB (totally my fault that I forgot to ask him about it when I read the list!!!) which would have negated stubborn from my unit!!! Dodged a bullet there. Both units engaged the savage orcs while the artillery shot away the trolls and arachnarok. The savage orks killed both my units but I managed to get the quarreler bunker in to kill the Great Shaman with a challenge from my BSB. The savage ork bunker then shrunk to the point where my quarrellers were out of combat and safe. At the end of the game the organ guns shot off the lone Warboss a la Last Samurai and the gyrocopter killed 4 warmachines in close combat. All I had left was my warmachines, gyro, a runesmith, BSB and quarrellers. It was one of those games where it was not over until turn 5 when he broke me on his turn which still gave me a round of shooting. Could not ask for a better opponent and an amazing GT.
Win 24-1

Overall I finished 9th (battle points beat out a three way tiebreaker) out of over 100 people and won Best General with the second highest battle points. I have never won a major award at a GT before and it was a nerdy bucket list moment. Considering every member of ETC Team USA except for one was at this tournament it was pretty competitive. That being said you won’t find nicer people at a GT, especially with groups such as the Unplugged Gamers, Shambling Horde, Darkstar, LI Wargaming/Sustainable Center, CCG, Lost Legion to name a few. 1st, 2nd and 3rd went to two VC max scream lists and a skaven list respectively. I voluntarily accepted a painting deduction of 25% of my total score since I used an army with models I did not completely paint myself. In total that would have raised my overall score by 12 points total. By next GT I will have them all painted by me so that wont matter anymore. It was a call I was completely ok with and I have the utmost respect for the paint judges and TO there…even though I would have then been 3rd overall! Shucks. Hope to see more Dwarfs there next year and thanks for reading my first battle report!

Thoughts on the list: honestly, as much as I love my quarrelers I need to find another bunker. The crossbows almost never got to fire and they were too expensive for what they did. They give the army some amazing variety but I think I will experiment with a Longbeard/Warrior with shield bunker for my next GT. I'll also try to squeeze in a second gyrocopter because as usual they are invaluable.
