The clan elders come to the decision not to flee to any of the other holds, given that the underway was no longer safe and the mountain passes were crawling with greenskins. Instead, they fled deeper into the mountains, looking to create a new home for their clans to shelter in.

After two years of wandering and evading, the clans find a series of caverns that are only inhabited by a small tribe of night goblins and which were rich in mineral wealth. After a night and a day of murderous fighting, the caverns are cleared with no survivors to spread the tale. Construction and fortification soon begin.

In this year, the dwarfs declare their hold to be worthy of a proper name. It is called "Khaz Dawr", or 'The New Home.' It also marks the first year that the dwarfs send out scouts into the world at large. The scouts return, reporting on the deprivations of Ugruk Beardburner. Deciding that the world is still not safe to return to, the dwarfs shut their doors once more. The gates do not open for another hundred years.

Several games played with the Bretonnians in the starter set. Without a doubt I lost most of them while I learned how to play. Eventually, I decided to pick up dwarfs. A few of those very old human models are still in my collection...
Human refugees fleeing into the mountains are discovered by the hold's rangers. After a long debate, the dwarfs take pity on the humans and allow them to settle on their lands. These humans become known as the 'dawikoni.' These men, of Bretonnian descent, begin the slow process of 'dwarfication.'

Their first battle lasts from morning to night, with neither side able to claim the field.

The dwarfs planned to camp for the night and attack again in the morning. The men had other ideas, and sallied forth before dawn. A desperate battle was fought, which ended with the dwarfs declaring that 'they had made their point and had taught the men a lesson' before withdrawing from the battlefield. The fact that thirty three pieces of gold wasn't worth the cost of the small war or even the loss of life was never mentioned.

The old nemesis of Khaz Dawr returned once more, for more than one champion now saw the hold as a proving ground to gain favor for the dark gods. They were met in battle, not only by the dwarfs, but by the Dawikoni. The human community had continued to grow over the centuries and had grown somewhat wealthy due to its mercantile endeavors. Where once they were but scouts for the dwarfs, now they raised armies in their own right. Over the span of seven decades, an entire generation as men would know it, army after army of chaos follows marched into the lands of Khaz Dawr. The campaign finally ended when the dwarfs and dawikoni marched into the tribal lands of the chaos followers and put man, woman and child to the axe.

Inspired by their many victories, more dawikoni adventurers set out. One such group reaches Lustria. While initially successful, the men soon find themselves caught in a pre-existing battle between dark elf raiders and the lizardmen. While the majority of the dawikoni made it out, one man was caught. Just as with what happened centuries ago, he told the dark elves where his kinsmen were going. Little did he, nor the other dawikoni know, but the dark elves had been fighting for a specific relic, a relic which the dawikoni had unwittingly taken. A large force of elves was dispatched to hunt down the men and return with it. This was of the utmost importance to the dark elves, for their coven of witches had declared that it was essential to their coming invasion plans of Ulthuan.

The time of lamentations. The dark elves arrived unseen by the dawikoni, and they fell upon the dawikoni settlements with great fury and malice. Within a month all of the 'new' settlements made by the dawikoni were little more than smoking ruins. Even when a full force of dawikoni warriors marched forth, they were merely taken apart by the agile and skilled elves. The tide only began to turn when the dark elves pursued the men into the mountains. There, their advanced came to a halt, but with casualties inflicted beyond what the men could bear.

Finally, the dawikoni called on the dwarfs for help. It was what the dwarfs had been waiting for, ever since they had seen the elves come to despoil the lands. Rank upon rank of dwarfs marched from Khaz Dawr, and the conflict shifted. The elves were forcefully pushed out of the mountains, and into the lands below. Flush with victory, the men and dwarfs eagerly pursued their broken foes...directly into an ambush. An ambush which obliterated the army.

To make matters worse, the tomb kings had not forgotten the insult done to them by the dawikoni. The dark elves thus marched into the mountains once more, only this time with the undead beside them. The full force of the dawikoni joined with the dwarfs of Khaz Dawr in a battle that would determine their fate. After two days of fighting, the dark elves finally regained the relic that they had been fighting so hard for. Without a word, they suddenly withdrew, leaving the tomb kings to face the dwarven and dawikoni wrath alone. The undead held out just long enough for the remaining elves to safely withdraw.

The time of lamentations continued. The dawikoni and dawi found themselves dangerously weakened by their conflict with the elves. So much so, that there was little that they could do when the forces of chaos once again walked the lands, coming scant weeks after the departure of the elves. The hordes fell upon the dawikoni lands, and drove the men to the brink of extinction. Even when the dwarfs marched forth to aid the humans, it was for naught, as the dwarven warriors were lured into a trap. They attacked and slaughtered a band of mutated ogres, only to learn that the ogres were the bait. The dwarfs were soon surrounded and massacred themselves. Eventually, both man and dwarf retreated into Khaz Dawr to wait out the onslaught. When the forces of chaos finally departed, the once proud lands of the dawikoni were little more than ruins. The few survivors, humbled by the experience, once again swore loyalty to the dwarfs. And thus ended the golden age of men, and their dreams of glory.

The forces of chaos did not leave though, and laid siege to Khaz Dawr. It was their last mistake. The dwarfs, infuriated by the continued assault, used tunnels unknown to the chaos forces to sally forth. A great throng of dwarfs came upon the forces of chaos. The rangers of the hold fought with beastmen, and scattered the unruly army of monstrosities. The miners and warriors of the hold came upon the chaos dwarf engineers and their siege engines. Catching them unawares, the dawi zharr were put to the axe and their machines of war fell beneath many a hammer. Finally, from the gates came an army of slayers, which directly attacked, and slaughtered, the fell warriors of chaos. For the moment, Khaz Dawr was safe.

-2500 High Elves v Dwarfs (victory)
Not long after this great victory, an army of asur marched into the region. The assault on Ulthuan had begun, and this task force had been sent because their loremasters had divined that the relic which the dark elves had taken was in the region. Desperate to foil the dark elf plot, the elves came upon the angered dwarfs. Mistaking the high elves for their dark kindred, the dwarfs fell upon the Asur. A bloody battle took place between the two armies at a river crossing, which soon ran red with the blood of the fallen. While the hold's slayers died to a dwarf, the rest of the warriors used their sacrifice to flank and cut down the elven host. Only a single elf survived that bloody day, to bring news of his defeat to his kinsmen.

-2500 Ogres v Dwarfs (victory)
A migration of ogres comes upon the tombs of Khaz Dawr. The ogres assault its gates, but are held in place by the faithful of Gazul until help arrives. The ogres soon found themselves surrounded by vengeful dwarfs. The assault faltered and the survivors fled into the mountains.

-2500 Dark Elves v Dwarfs (victory)
A host of khainites made a surprise assault on the forge and mine of Dagrun Steelscowl. Having been evicted from Athel Loren when they refused to live in concert with the other elven refugees, they followed the path of the bloody handed god. While both Dagrun and his apprentice lost their lives in the conflict, of the khainites, under a dozen managed to flee the field of battle with their lives.
