Dwarf Names (Warhammer Fluff)

This comes from a number of posts, but primarily the original Dawi Fluff book "Stone & Steel" for those wanting a 'proper' WH Dwarf name.

First off, apologies to Bugman, but this has several more names from the Warhammer Universe than previously posted in his naming thread. I had no idea how to merge this into that, so took the easy option!

Dwarf names in Warhammer

Dwarf names consist of three elements, their first name, surname and finally their clan name. In certain circumstances, a Dwarf's standing in craft can also be used, i.e.

Master Jeweller Alaric Algrimmsson of the Makhzad Clan

Dwarf Surnames

Dwarf surnames are usually based on their parent's name:
  • Mother's for girls - sdottir
  • Father's for boys - sson
Alrikasdottir - the daughter of Alrika
Algrimmsson - the son of Algrimm

Dwarf orphans are often raised by their Aunts or Uncles, and are named as such:
  • Aunt's for girls - sniz
  • Uncle's for boys - snev
Alrikasniz - the niece of Alrika
Algrimmsnev - the nephew of Algrimm

Lost orphans aka Foundlings:

In the exceptionally rare circumstance when a newborn Dwarf's parentage cannot be ascertained, the surname 'Khazadson' or 'son of a Dwarf' is used in formal circumstances. In informal circumstances, the orphan adopts the step-parent's name with the suffix -find, meaning 'found by'.Grom Khazadson = formal, Grom Alreksfind = informal.

Nicknames

Alternatively, a Dwarf may come to be known by a nickname either through great heroism or shame, or due to a particularly strong physical characteristic (Esmirelda Flamelocks) or clan tradition (Tallhelm). This tradition is even more common amongst Dawi living amongst Human settlements (please see below).

Famous nicknames are never shared, as it is deemed presumptuous by the younger Dwarf to take on such a name. Nicknames (especially for males) need to be unique. Some nicknames are passed down through generations, or freely given from the holder to a younger Dwarf. When this happend, the younger Dwarf is now responsible for upholding the good reputation and honour of not only himself, but everyother holder of the name for generations before. Such a name giving is taken very seriously by both the giver and the receiver.

Female nicknames tend to be based on temperament as well as physical characteristics, typically very flattering. The exclusivity of female nicknames is not so important as the males, many sharing a similar name, such as Brightlocks.

I'll update this with some additional elements when I get the opportunity, such as profession names in Khazalid if you want a full Khazalid name. I'll also see what I can do about supplying some known clan names from Holds. That'll take a while though!

"Human" Dwarf names

Khazalid is rarely spoke outside of Holds or Dwarf only groups. Those Dwarfs that are frequent visitors to, or live in human cities often adopt their human-tongue nick name (according to Warhammer fluff). It's often the easiest translation from the actual name in Khazalid. That's why I call 'me' Alebelly Cragfist. The actual translation would be:

Highly respectable and Noble Dawi of considerable craft, wealth and means, whose clan elder once hammered through rock with his bare fists to save his clan from drowning, whilst simultaneously discovering a new, rich seam of gold.

Considering that much of the above is lost in translation, and the Manlings don't have much time in the phsical realms, Alebelly Cragfist is close enough!
