Thrang snatched up his weapons and stormed out of the main gate, snarling loudly “It’s true the Southling holds have gone soft; and deaf to warning! Dr'zka! What dwarf dismisses the word of another?!”
He found himself on the outside of the gate, which he shook his fist at, angrily “And who uses a thagging sword?!”

Outside Dwarf Mine

Thrang found himself outside of the mine.  Looking back towards the mine, he saw the dwarfs on the parapets above him leering at him.  The soldiers had returned to their station at the gate and barred his entrance back into the mine.  He saw the longbeard within, sit back at the table and begin scribbling more notes in his book.

Now that he was outside, he thought about where he would go now.  His companion was still captive inside and the town of New Haven was to far away to make before night fall.  He might could get back to the abbey before night sat in, but just maybe.  Where would he go now?

Inside Dwarf Mine

Inside the mine, the elf had caused a disturbance.  Sounds echoed around the room, sounds that sounded like a dozen scurrying feet.  The guards had leapt to investigate at once, but were instantly distracted.  As the elf had cast the spell, something had happened.

One of the guards noticed that something wasn't right and had turned back to see what had just made the end of his beard bristle when he saw the elf vanish from the cage.  With a roar, he turned around to see a black bird dart out of the cage.

The other dwarf had reached the door and was about to pull it open to investigate the scurrying feet when the roar behind him caused him to turn back.  The door remained shut, even as Bel-Kabal as a raven pelted for it.

Swooping back, the elf spied a second door on the other side of the room sitting slightly ajar.  Below him, the two dwarfs were drawing weapons and speaking in a harsh, guttural language that he didn't understand.  The sounds of the scampering feet died away as he committed all his energy to escaping.

Abbey

The old man simply shook his head at Lars and said, "I will be returning to working on the building.  Then the lady will be coming to stop the shadow."

With that, he made to stand up and began muttering to himself in a different language as he gathered his staff and a small bag from his cot.

Lars shook his head. "Thanks anyway, oh - I'm called Lars," the bounty hunter replied. He turned and began to explore the abbey for clues which might reveal information about the supposed Cult of the Dead compromising the abbey. [OOC: Lars will make use of the Silent Move skill and explore the abbey in search of clues which might point him towards the supposed Cult of the Dead]

Seeing the open door, Kabal rapidly flies toward it, keen to escape the dwarven hold. He tries to remember the way back and where he last saw his sword as he flies as high as possible, sticking to the shadowed ceiling.

Abbey

As the man leaves the room and heads outside, Lars carefully checks the hallway to see that the three men are nowhere to be seen and sets off.  The only sound is his boots lightly hitting the stone of the abbey floor as he moves out to investigate the main chapel.

As his eyes grow accustomed to the dim light, he see that the interior has a floor of stone with light shining down from holes in the ceiling above.  The rafters appear to be rotten in many places due to the lack of the roof against the elements.  The benches that sit along the length of the floor are dilapidated and warped from exposure to the weather as well.  A thick layer of dust lies over everything.

From where Lars just exited the doorway that leads deeper within the abbey, a pathway has been cleared through this dust from a lot of foot traffic and leads towards the main door of the chapel.  An altar stands close by and seems to be covered in dust as well.  A second door leads out of this main chamber and seems to lead to the ruined bell tower.

There is no one in sight.

Dwarf Mine

In a rush of wings, Bel-Kabal speeds towards the open door and finds himself in a stair well.  Behind him, the dwarfs are rushing towards the stair and screaming.  In a flash, the elf looks around and sees that the stair only lead up and figures (rightly so) that they lead to the parapets above the main gate.

Without pausing, the elf shoots up and finds himself in a room that has a number of weapons mounted on a wall and a few cots in the corner.  A table sits in the center of the room with a loaf of bread resting on a plate.  Across the room, a doorway stands open and beyond he can see the crossbow dwarfs watching the approaches to the gate.

Below the gate, Thrang is still glaring back at the mine and nursing his bitterness at being rejected by his own kin.  The gate keeper and longbeard are still scowling at him when a commotion atop the parapet arrests his attention.

A deep rumbled yell echoes from somewhere above which causes all the dwarf quarrellers to spin towards the side of the mountain.  The sergeant, who had been tense after the exchange with Thrang, also wasted no time in brandishing his weapon once more and rushing out towards Thrang.  The longbeard also draws his sword and moves up with the other guards to see what is happening.

Thang watches as a large black bird shoots out of the side of the parapets and arcs upward.  A moment passes as the quarrellers look on with interest before they come to their senses.  Two bolts are loosed but miss the bird as it soars upward.

"What's going on?!" roared the sergeant in khazalid as the other guards burst out onto the parapet and the quarrellers look about for guidance.

The first dwarf out the door points at the bird and says, "Elgi magicks."

"****, this place could seriously use some house keeping." Lars muttered, as he walked into a large chamber. There was a virtual sea of dust over everything and the sign of nature's work seemed to have been quite literally stamped onto the ageing section of the building. Lars looked around. "A pathway, lot's of footprints - place must have a fair share of visitors," he thought to himself. "What's this, an altar? Best check it out."

[OOC: Lars will carefully examine the altar]

Thrang automatically brought his hammer up in a defensive stance, squinting into the sky.
‘Aye, elf magicks...’ he thought.
Well, no help to be found in this mine he thought, and if that black bird was the elf he’d probably better keep pace with it. His short legs took off in the direction the bird flew and hoped that his path wouldn’t be marked by crossbow bolts.

[action: follow the bird!]

As Kabal speeds through the Dwarf hold, he hears the sounds of his pursuers close behind, whistles of arrows flying past and the faint trample of running boots. Adrenaline pumping through his veins as he weaves through the passageways and out of the parapets. His sharpened eyes spot Thrang already outside the gates and caws, trying to attract his attention. He banks in the air left and then right to avoid the barrage of arrows that the Dwarves might fire. He decides the easiest place to loose the Dwarves would be in the raging red storm near the abbey and heads in that direction.

[OOC: Zigzag to avoid arrows then head back to the abbey when out of range]

Abbey

As Lars examines the altar, he notices that a certain area has been cleared of dust.  Lowering himself to sit before the altar, he notices that an effigy of a lady made out of bronze has been cleaned.  Studying the effigy reveals that it is a metal work that sits into an insert of the altar.  With little effort, he could probably remove it.

Not wishing to disturb it yet, he examines the rest of the altar and finds that a moth eaten piece of cloth acts as a runner beneath a layer of grime.  The topside also shows signs of something heavy striking it.  In the back, a recess holds a small book.

Dwarf Mine

Not wasting any time, Thrang begins running as the bird changes directions and heads south towards the abbey.  Shouts echo from the gatehouse as the longbeard attempts to restore order.  Thrang kept running.

A few seconds pass, and then a few more.  Thrang keeps running, trying desperately to keep up with the bird above him.

A minute passes and then a new round of crossbow bolts bounce off the hard ground around him.  Still he doesn't look back as the red dust begins to swirl about him.

A few more minutes go by and he begins to slow.  Hissprinting in his gear has finally overcome his natural tenacity as his breathing is ragged and he begins to clutch at a stitch in his side.

"Hmph, a statue...of The Lady? Interesting - I've never known a Cultist of the dead to Worship who'd worship the Bretonnian pantheon. What's this, a book? Best take a look at it - maybe the old Bretonnian I met earlier will know something about it. Go to be careful - might be protected by some sort of magic ward" Lars thought to himself. "Do I die." He muttered as he reached for the book...

[OOC: Lars will carefully grab the book, making sure not to disturb the statue, and read whatever he is able."

Turning the pages of the book, Lars is unable to read anything in it. Even though he knows his letters, he doesn’t understand whatever language the book is written in. It is worn and appears to be falling apart as the binding has loosened.

"Might be worth showing this to the old pilgrim - though, being blind, he'll not be able to read it he might at least know something about it." Lars thought to himself.

[OOC: Lars will return to the Grail Pilgrim to see if he knows anything about the book and alter]

“Bloody southerners!” Thrang swore, clutching his chest. He paused for breath near a rock and looked all around the sky for the black bird.
He made a note to add the guards to his personal book of grudges, at least, he would when he wasn’t running for his life. And one day, when he was next back at his hold, in the bleak snowy fastness of Norsca, the ancient Loremaster Ethgrim would carve that grudge into the stone tablets of history, which would be kept forever in the vaulted stone dungeons of his home. That’d teach them, he thought.

Abbey

Lars looked for the old man.  He knew he had went outside and so Lars followed him and stepped back out into the swirling red dust.

The blind man was no where to be found.  The cart still stood near the abbey but the old man seemed to have vanished.  He was not near the bell tower or even along the sides of the Abbey.  Scanning the horizon brought only tears as Lars strained to blink the dust from his eyes.

Dwarf Mine

Checking behind him, Thrang was unable to see any signs of pursuit in the swirling dust.  He turned back to see where the bird had went.

"**** this sand, **** this place and **** you Todbringer" Lars muttered angrily to himself as he walked back into the abby - daemons, Skaven, Cultists and sandstorms, all in one heavy package and thoroughly chaotic to boot! "Hmph, well - as our new friend's nowhere to be found - I might as well explore the bell tower - might contain some more clues if anything." Lars concluded.

[OOC: Lars will keep the book carefully stored and make use of the Silent Move and Search skills to explore the bell tower]

Abbey

Moving to the door that leads to the bell tower, Lars carefully pushes it open with a loud crash and a bang as something on the other side is dislodged.  Dust spills out of the now open door and causes Lars to sneeze.  As he coughs through the dust, he looks around to see if anyone has come to check on him but doesn't see anyone.

Past the door, the chamber is filled with rubble.  A rickety wooden staircase leads upwards.  The roof in this section is gone and the stairs seem fairly rotten from the exposure.  Looking up, he can see that a section of the wall has collapsed and the bell now rests at the bottom of the tower directly in front of him.  The upper reaches are hidden from view and are only accessible through a long and dangerous climb up the stairs.

"Old man has his work cut out for him, sheesh - place is practically falling apart." Lars grumbled as he examined the rotting staircase. "Well, doubt I'll find anything up there - certainly not worth breaking my kneck for! I'd better head back into the abby - maybe the man will be there."

[OOC: Lars will head back into the abbey, to the place where he originally bumped into the old man and co]

Abbey

Lars moved back into the abbey where he saw two of the three men he had adventured with earlier standing near the altar.  Seeing Lars walk in, they turned to face him and said something in a different language and waved.  The man who had been translating was not present.

Wilderness

Bel-Kabal finally landed next to Thrang and transformed back into an elf.  The elf was now weaponless but he was at least free.

The decision now was where to head.  Back towards the abbey or elsewhere?  A quick check of the sun showed that it was heading towards evening and would be pushing it to make it back to the abbey by nightfall.  They also wasn't sure where else to go in the swirling red dust.

The two men nod at Lars as he moves back into the center of the abbey.  Unfortunately, he isn't able to find the old man but he meets the last of the trio.

"You looking for something friend?" the man asks Lars.  "You seem agitated when you should be recovering your strength.  Perhaps you are reconsidering journeying with us in search of the wizards?"
