"Well, be my guests." Lars said, turning to the Tileans. "There were some complications - we split up after we left the ruins. I had business to pursue in New Haven and the others began the journey to the Dwarf Mine without me."

"Glad I can help," Lars told the old man. "Going to go down now - the sooner that I can get this done the better."

"Thrang Thunderforge, Prospector, Norsca" he growled hastily. "Our business here is..." he lowered his voice "is to warn you of a terrible enemy, you are potentially in mortal danger! An elf is the least of your worries!"

He cleared his throat and continued "I commend your thoroughness but we urgently need to speak to the leader of this settlement."

The old man bobbled his head appreciatively at Lars' words while the three men moved together and one of the men unzipped his bag.  As Lars watched, he produced a number of small pewter cups and passed them around to the others.

"Care to join us friend?" asked the Tilean.  "We always drink our success before venturing into the unknown."

As Lars watched, the man with the cups began passing them around to each of the group, waving his hands animatedly as he did so.  He pushed a cup towards Lars before pulling it back and drawing forth a bottle from his bag.

The bottle appeared to be a wine bottle.  A label that Lars had never seen was proudly displayed on the front of the bottle as the man smiled and showed it to Lars.

"Bretonnian wine," said the Tilean in way of explanation.

The man poured it and handed the cup back to Lars before filling up each of the others' mugs.

"Success!" said the Tilean as the others each raised their glasses in salute and then drank deeply.  Lars could smell a very sweet aroma wafting from the contents of his mug.

Dwarf Mine

The older dwarf scribbled furiously.  Without responding to Thrang, he pulled the book closer and inspected it before dusting it with some sort of powder.  A moment later he blew the powder back off and looked up at Thrang.

"You will be escorted to the foreign quarters.  We have an inn there for travelers.  The thane is currently busy with urgent matters but will see you as soon as he may."

"Sorry, I don't drink when working," Lars replied handing the cup back to the man. "Now that you've had your fun I'm going to go down and get this done - feel free to follow."

As Lars pushed the cup away from himself, the man who had handed it too him stares incredulously at him.  He then raises his voice in what was most definitely an affronted tone.

"Suit yourself," said the Tilean who then drained the cup himself.

Lars pushed on past them and made for the door which was unlocked and pushed it open.  Beyond the door, a staircase descends down at an angle and curves back upon itself towards the bottom of the descent.  As the group came to the landing they saw that the walls had a number of shelves built into them and that on these shelves along the left hand wall were a number of skeletons.  The shelves on the right were empty.  The tunnel proceeded a few dozen yards ahead towards a small door which was closed.

The door appeared to be made out of solid wood.  Lars approached it cautiously and found it was opened with a key sticking in the lock.  In the darkness he wasn't able to see much else beyond, that is until the third man of the group produced a torch and lit it.

Pushing through to the far side, the first thing Lars noted was that the far side of the door was scarred with multiple claw marks.  He also noticed the smell from the room beyond  which wafted out and took away their breath.

The room beyond houses a large sarcophagus.  It is made of a light grey stone and is intricately carved in the likeness of a noble looking man in armor.  It is also busted open and the bones within are strewn about the floor.  A closer look at these reveal that they have been broken and gnawed.  The floor all around, even though they are made of rough stone, show claw marks.

Three doors lead out of this room, one in each of the other three walls.  The light from the torch only illuminates the current room and nothing beyond the dark doors is visible.  Lars steps forward and his foot slides out from beneath him as he falls to the ground hard.  The men behind him laugh as he attempts to regain his feet.  Something was wet on the stone floor but he couldn't make it out.

Lars got to his feet and rolled his eyes at the men. "You don't have to listen if you don't want to, but I recommend that we search this room. We should begin with the claw marks on the door and this...substance on the floor."

Thrang made a point of dusting the dust off of his beard.
“Do you have a runesmith about the place?” he asked.

Kabal noticed the crossbows pointed at him armed and ready to fire. He turnes around grumbles “There’s no pleasing some dwarves is there.” He places his hands behind his back waiting for the cool claps of the iron shackles. “Go on then, what are you waiting for?” he askes impatiently, eager to be done with this ordeal.

The men laughed some more as the Tilean spoke to them in that strange language.  Finally he turned back and said, "Sure thing."

The men looked around the room as Lars moved about as well.  The problem with this strategy was that the light of the torch moved with the man holding it and Lars found that the shadows danced about the place when he least wanted it too.

As a result, the group turned up very little with their search after a minute and paused to regroup.

"We need to find more light," said the Tilean as he spoke with one of his men and pointed back to the door they had come in through.

Dwarf Mine

The dwarf clapped the iron manacles about the elf's hand before grabbing him beneath the arm and spinning him about to face the gate.  As a dwarf warrior moved to either side of Bel-Kabal, they set off at towards the mine.

The dwarfs were clearly trying to force a quick pace which made the elf glad that his stride was longer than that of a dwarf.  As a result, the pace was more like a stroll to him.

The group approached the table as the older dwarf replied to Thrang in Khazalid, "No Rhunki here lad."

Bel-Kabal had no idea what was said as the dwarf stood up.  Another of the warriors approached and the old dwarf told Thrang to follow him to the inn in Reikspiel, having caught sight of the elf.

On the whole, going to an inn didn't sound that bad, but this was a dwarf mine and the elf didn't really expect much of a dwarfen inn.  He really didn't expect that the dwarf would be led to a door on the right side of the hall while he was marched to a door on the left.

Thrang saw the change in the elf's course and paused, causing the warrior with him to stop and look back as well.  The elf was taken through the door on the opposite side of the hall, still escorted by three dwarf warriors.

OOC:  At this point, Bel-Kabal is being taken into the barracks and to a small cage at the rear of this area where he will be imprisoned.  I'll let you two make any actions or ask any questions you desire before I progress much further.  Likewise, since this is a seemingly awkward place to pause, let me know if you would rather press on.

"Perhaps you could leave the torch with us, we can continue searching, and one of you can go up and find more light?" Lars suggested. "I have some matches on me, so if you boys have any extra torches we could light them."

After some time, the man returned back to the others with a torch for each of them.  Once lit, the four searched the room again but was unable to find anything.  Any tracks that were there were long since erased by their passing, yet Lars couldn't kind figure out how they had made so many tracks in their search.

The puddle he has slipped on turned out to be a yellowish substance.  Looking around, they found puddles of various colors all around the room.  There was brown puddles, red ones, yellowish areas (like the one Lars had slid in), and others that were greenish.

The smell was nearly unbearable, and many of the group had wrapped old pieces of cloth about their nose and mouth to help lessen the nauseating effect.

There was some talk in that other language before the Tilean came over to Lars and said, "We are having a debated on whether to split up and search the different paths or stick together.  Quicker to split up, I think."

"Splitting up would be dangerous, I don't advise it - if, that's whatever was down here, was able to pick a fight with some dwarfs and kill one of them we ought to be cautious. If we are to split up I recommend, at the minimum, we go in pairs, you can come with me and your colleagues could go as another pair." Lars replied. "We should also collect some samples of these...substances on the ground - can take them to an apothecary for identification."

Some more quick talking in that language before the man says, "Someone should stay here at the least, so the woman doesn't sneak past us as we search one of the doorways ahead.  So three of us will continue, but which way?"

OOC:  There is a door set into each wall.  Using the one you entered through as a reference point, you can go right, left, or straight ahead.

"Well, I would not get your hopes up, however what's the harm? I'd say we start by going to the left." Lars replied.

Kabal seeing the small cage, sighs while shaking his head at the dwarves's actions. Frustrated about his outcome of negotiations he turns to the guards angrily.

"I am not going in there. I would rather leave this place than be defenceless and imprisoned for trying to help. Can you take me back to the entrance to the mine?"

Posting one of the men at the entrance, the Tilean, Lars, and one of the others started down the left hand passage.  This tunnel was much like the other they had been in, with skeletal remains sitting in alcoves along the wall.  The difference was that here the bones were disturbed.  They were broken and looked as if they had been gnawled on.

Towards the rear of the tunnel, a section of the passage had caved in and led into a natural looking cave system.

Holding his torch to illuminate the raw rock beyond, the Tilean said as he motioned to Lars, "After you."

Dwarf Mine

The dwarfs grabbed the elf roughly and began to force him into the cage.

"No, too dangerous," Lars replied. "We have no idea what's down there, how far these caves go, or where the woman might have gone; these tunnels - doesn't seem like they were part of this abbey's original design, nor does not seem like a simple bit of re-decoration by whatever dug them. We should explore the other two passages and, if we don't find anything, get back above ground. Ideally we should also try and seal up these tunnels. First thing's first, I want to examine these bones, try to work out what's been gnawing on them - the teeth marks might be an indication of what was doing so, and thus what might be down here. I have some ideas, but they need confirmation." A memory of he and Gunther's mission into the Bogenhafen sewers sprang into Lars' mind. They'd discovered a similar arrangement to the one here in which strange creatures - half man, half rodent - had dug their way in to the bowls of the city. Gunther had claimed they were called Skaven and they'd best keep quite about it. In any case, Lars knelt down by a couple of the bones and held them up in the light in an attempt to discern what might have been gnawing at them.

The two men stared at Lars expectantly as he seemed lost in thought.  Finally the Tilean says, "Well, do we push on or not?"

Lars stared down at the scattered and damaged bones, they had clearly been gnawed on and whatever did it was not tidy. "Hmph," Lars thought to himself. "We've got a subterranean creature, which can clearly dig, judging by those tunnels at the rear of this passage, that likes to gnaw on bones and is messy about it.  Could be Greenskins, but i've never known a Greenskin that likes to gnaw on bones. Troll, maybe? Would explain how scattered these bones are, they gnaw on them too. On the other hand, if a troll had come through it would have broken down that door at the end and not simply clawed it, nor are they particularly accomplished diggers. Some sort of mutant, I suppose? Although, I doubt that subterranean mutants who happen to gnaw on bones would be that numerous down here. Skaven, it's got to be - would also explain the tunnel and the claw marks on the door." Lars concluded to himself as he rise up from his knees and onto his legs again.

"Gotta be careful - there are probably Skaven down here!" Lars told the men. "We ought to head back to where we started, check the other passages - one straight ahead and the one to the right. If we succeed, or fail, to discover the woman we need - if we have not been attacked or if it's still quiet - to come back here and block up this tunnel."

"As you wish," said the Tilean and the group headed back into the central chamber and tried the passage that went straight.

This passage seemed to be in much the same state as the first one they looked into.  The bodies of the interned were desecrated and lay strewn about in various stages of having been eaten.  The only difference was that there was no passage leading out of this tunnel.

After a quick search they again returned to the central chamber and moved down the third and final passage.  This one was exactly like the first.  The chewed up bones, broken masonry, and even a passage that led down into more natural caves.

Dwarf Mine

Having watched the elf being led away, Thrang saw that his escort had stopped to watch him curiously.

"So what is your deal, elgen ufti?" asked the dwarf callously.  "You want to go join the elgi or come and make yourself comfortable in the tavern?"
