Fellow beards,

This thread is to tell you the tale of Haugspori's adventures in the Jotun Mountains, in the realms of the 9th Age, where he is to battle with Oogah da Boogah the Orc Boss. I'll post the scenario rules for Border Patrol in the next post.

Pelle

Haugspori’s Chance
Haugspori “The Quick” Copperpaste had to hear a lot of laughter from Elgi and other snobistic factions when his kin called him by his nickname out loud in border towns. He knew that as long as he kept his worldview limited to Dwarfs he was in fact “Quick”. And why would a dwarf ever look beyond the great halls of his kin, with riches such as metals, gems, cured meat, cured bread and cured Ale aplenty. Most things dwarfs ate or drank were cured, and Haugspori felt sorry for races that had to eat fresh, unfermented food. When laughed upon by strangers he’d quickly challenge them to a little “apple and arrow”, for he was master of the Quarrels, and if that didn’t impress them it usually ended in a good old fist brawl.
Proud was he, when his father, Pellegrim Copperpaste send him to the frontier outpost of Nevaz Thekk. Of course his brother Kheffi “The Daft” Copperpaste was waiting to take of Reign of great halls of Nevaz Brazzir, and his Sister was engaged with the Great Kings son, but he would soon prove the Jotun mountains weren’t at all as barren and useless as his siblings said. And as the elders said.
After arriving at Nevaz Thekk he set out to do what he knew best, to roam the mountain slopes north of the Jotun Mountains with Arrows, his Patrolers and Little Kragi flying low in Blue Thunders. Usually the unfortunate noise of Kragi and his flying machine lured out many wonderful monsters. Haugspori mostly directed those monsters towards his Patrolers, also known as the Baiters, while showering them in arrows until they made contact, after which he and his men rushed over for a good ol’ flank banging. At least that was the plan. Usually something of the sort would happen, but his Partollers would start running after meeting the monsters, and Haugspori and his Arrows had to chase the charade around several peaks until he could catch up with them. The fourth night after moons peak, Haugspori received a message from a croaken from one of his scouts about wardrummes and crude songs; which he did not understand as most mountains monsters lacked the intelligence to make music. Could it be? Could it be a tribe of Greenskins? The sense of risk for the outposts safety was soon overcome by Haugspori’s blind desire fight this old enemy. Did Orcs eat fermented food? Who knew. He had to find out. Advance Dawi!

The list for the first battle
Haugspori "the Quick" Copperpaste -Ranger / Thane, Army General, Crossbow, Shield, Runic Items: Rune of Fury, 2x Rune of Iron, Rune of Kinship, Rune of Might [282pts]

Copperpast's Baiters (20) - Core Clan Warriors, Champion, Standard Bearer, Vanguard, Shield [380pts]

Copperpaste's Axes (10) - Core Clan Warriors, Great Weapons [180pts]

Haugspori's Arrows (16) - Special Rangers with Crossbow, Great Weapon, Champion [488pts]

The Battle report my opponent made:

Oogah's Gamble Battle report:

The night before the daring raid on the dwarf outpost was plagued with a terrible bone-chilling cold. In the morning every regiment was missing a few orcs or goblins. But disaster had struck Oogah's Krushas, as no more than half their mounts had made it through the bitter chill! Looking down at the dwarves readying their defenses Oogah cursed under his breath and spit a big glob of phlegm into the snow. He stirred it with the claw-like toenail of his right foot. The portent was good, even though the dwarf defenders had survived the breath of winter mostly unscathed they were few in number. The orcs would wash over them in a tide of green violence and the stunti's king wouldn't know of the starting Waaargh until it was at his doorstep!

IMG 8664 (Small)

Meanwhile Haugspori was quickly directing his clansmen into place. The greenskins were coming and they had brought a giant. Well, his rangers would take it down a peg with their greataxes. His defenses relied on the stubbornness of his clansmen while he would sweep in from the flank and crush their foe utterly. The 'Baiters' advanced from the town walls planting themselves straight into the orc's path, but Blue Thunder zoomed overhead and unleashed a punishing salvo into the giant, tearing bloody gouges into the beast's chest and shoulder, while his own hand-picked force of rangers unleashed a deadly hail of bolts upon the wolfriders who had crept up on their position on the flank. The goblins refused to flee but their return fire was far from accurate. The wounded giant pounded down the slope peering over the ruins of an ancient tower and bellowing defiance. A tide of orcs charged for the dwarf copter, who stubbornly refused to give way, even when the goblin chariot also decided to head his way. The shaman summoned the strength of the Gork and al his warriors were blessed, but no matter how they tried they could not land a hit on the evasive flying machine. However as more bodies piled in the pilot decided to redeploy and zoomed out of combat, narrowly avoiding some buildings. Enraged beyond measure, the feral orcs raced after it at ran it down in a tide of rocks and bone clubs.

IMG 8666 (Small)

Now the dwarfs responded by closing the gaps, after the chariot decided to flee, Copperpaste's Axes hit the enraged orc unit in the flank while the Baiters and Haugspori's Arrows both charged their most hated foe: The Giant. The beast took a mighty swing with his club and sent a great many of the rangers flying broken through the air. Axes and hammers bit home, as the warriors fought their begrudged foe, but they were unable to fell their quarry, who stomped another ranger into the ground for good measure. The great axes felled a good few feral orcs but their frenzied attacks also took their toll on the dwarves and now the unit reformed to face a dwindling number of stubborn clansmen. The remaining wolf raiders saw their chance to charge the flank of the battered ranger unit as the chariot rallied and the feral boar boys proved just out of range for a flank charge on the Baiters. Magic was crushed by the dwarves stubborn nature and so the bloody mêlée continued. The Giant jumped onto the remaining rangers as wolves tore into their side and in the end Haugspori was the sole remainder of his proud unit. However, in a final act of defiance, their stand bearer had struck the giant’s leg and hamstrung him, sending the behemoth crashing into the snow. Haugspori was overrun and now the Baiters faced a flank charge by wolves.

IMG 8670 (Small)

The Axes however refused to be intimidated and proved nigh unkillable, holding the main force of the orcs at bay with a thin line of grimly determined clansmen. In the end even their formidable will couldn't turn the tide of battle. The feral orc boarboys and chariot crashed into the Baiters rear but still they stubbornly refused to flee, fighting to the last. Because of their stalwart last stand Haugspori was able to crawl from the battlefield, wounded but alive. The king would need to be warned of this dire threat!

Scenario 2: The Keg Wars

Army Selection

  • Regular force according to T9A rules for 2.250 pts.
  • No Lord characters allowed.
  • No Wizzard Masters allowed.
  • No more than 500 pts can be spent on characters.
  • Both armies designate one vanguard unit and can have no further vanguard units.
  • No army can have more than 7 units
  • No unit can be larger than 500 pts
  • Winds of magic are 1D6

Special Scenario Rules

  • Low Ceilings: all none-warmachine shooting is limited to 20” range and volley fire becomes regular shooting. Catapult weapons can not be used.
  • Irrepressible Gloom: All attacks halve their short range (short range becomes ¼ of max range).
  • Uncertain Footing: All cavalry, monstrous cavalry, chariots and flyers must take a DT(1) test while marching, charging, fleeing or pursuing.
  • The table edges are impenetrable terrain. Fleeing units touching the boards edge bounce off it, moving parallel to the boards edge, taking a DT(2) test when hitting the wall.
  • The battle field contains 6 “pillars of stone” (impenetrable). Place each at the centre of a 2’ by 2’ board section and scatter a D6”

Undiscovered Tunnels

At the start of the battle roll a d6 and apply the results for the game:

  1. Coal dust. These underground cavern are filled with dense coal dust, making it impossible to see far ahead. Unit’s charge range are rolled with a - 1D3m modifier. and shooting is at -1 to hit (light cover).
  2. Oven! The caverns are close to a magma vein; temperatures are extreme. Each turn each unit test on a 2D6. In turn 1 and 2 a roll of 12 it takes 1d6 heat hits that auto wound with AP(6). Fireborn saves apply as normal. In turn 3, 4 and 5 a roll of 11+ is a heat hit and in turn 6 a 10+ is a heat hit
  3. Gass leaks. Unknown gasses pour out of vents from the deep, danger! Place a marker on the centre of the battlefield and scatter two large round templates 4D6”. Any unit passing through the template takes a DT(1) test.
  4. Giant bat swarms. The armies might trigger a swarm of giant bats after they invade their territory. When a unit moves to within 6” of a pillar, roll a D6: on a 6+ they have awakened 1d3 bat swarms that charge them from their nest, interrupting the unit’s movement. Once a pillar has unleashed its bats it is empty.
  5. Fungal Growth: A plethora of strange and glowing shrooms line the walls of this passage: Ignore the Irrepressible Gloom scenario rule. All Gnashers are stubborn. movement within 6”of the side walls counts will trigger a spore attack on a D6 roll of 4+. The spores inflict a D6 hits with toxic attacks.
  6. Crumbling ceiling: The ceiling is unstable and filled with dangerous stalactites. At the start of each player turn that player rolls a D3, this is how many stalactites have fallen from the cave ceiling. starting with that player take the small template and place it anywhere on the battlefield and scatter 2D6” (on a hit only roll 1D6). Anything under the template suffers a S4 hit. The opposing player places the next template and so on. If any blackpowder weapons were fired in the last turn or a monster marched or charged: add +1 to the number of falling stalactites.

Scenario Special Objectives

  • The greenskins forces have tunneled through many leagues of stone to punch through the outer reaches of the mines of Nevaz Keff. They are aiming to sabotage the powder supply of the Dwarfs …. to blow up their defenses!
  • The Dwarven player place one 3” marker on his front deployment zone line. The marker represents a pile of powder keggs.
  • Each greenskins unit has a big torch. For every greenskin unit that reaches within 6" of the pile of powder keggs, the greenskins get to throw a giant torch at the powder keggs. When three torches hit the pile of keggs, the Greenskins win the secondary objective. If not, the Dwarfs win.

Haha, the game was tons of fun. Obviously I didn't expect that giant to last that long after my GW rangers, Thane and warriors charged it, but he rolled extremely well ... and that hurt :-€

Ready for next game, fully geared up :-)

Will avenge the lads! Most survived their terrible injuries and got patched up well enough.

Stonespori Grudge

It was in the middle of the night when the guard heard thumping on the hidden side entrance of the outpost hold Nevaz Thekk. They found the wounded Haugspori at the doorsteps, leaning in his great axes and with fury in his eyes. Quickly the forces of Thekk set out to retrieve the wounded from the battle site. Haugsproi’s cousin, Stonespori “Fire Drake” Copperpaste, heard his tales and tended to his wounds. The tales made Stonespori uneasy. As leader of Nevaz Thekk, he had to assume the Greenskin were stirring in their hotpots and were up to no good. And now that they met Dwarves, and worse, defeated them in battle, he knew the the outpost hold could be in danger. As there were far more Greenskins in the far Jotun mountains then there were Dwarves. Of course one Dwarf counted for a dozen Greenskins, but he could not risk a full attack. Especially since they had a Giant that could defeat elite rangers. So he sent his fastest Croakens to Nevaz Brazzir to ask Kheffi The Daft for reinforcements. He then wrote the name of "Oogah da Boogah" in his red book of grudges. If Kheffi the Daft would even send reinforcements, they would be at least two weeks aways. Better set up guards on the towers and in the lower reaches of the mines, where the had recently blasted a passage that led them to a large cavern system. Weary of the large and unknown system, he’d let his Ol’ Patrollers scout the area. He commanded his runical guardians, The Metalfists, and elite guard, The Keepers of the Undervaults, to be on guard. So if there was going to be trouble, they’d be ready to speed toward the entrance of the mines. If the situation was to be dire, he’d detonate the holds powder supplies himself, to make sure the Greenskins would not enter the Hold itself. But he was actually looking forward to get his revenge for what the lowlife savages done to his Cousin. Bring it on, he thought. He prepared his Drake-stone amulet for a little surprise, and unchained the twins Uki “Bladesinger” and Oki “Gobbo Cleaver” Dör. Setting those two free was as much a delight as a menace, but surely they would enjoy themselves with hordes of Greenskins. Last he send his engineer to oil up “The Roaster”. Ahhhrrrr, this was going to be a good time.

(Fluff from the Greenskin side)

Undermining the Dwarves
Chief Redcap personally oversaw da Rockbitaz work. They had been making steady progress in the ancient tunnels known by Shazzaslah and her kin. The mere thought of her still sent shivers down his spine. At his side Biggob gave a throaty warning growl, he petted his faithful mount and scratched his flank, putting the great Cave Gnasher at easy and sending its great tongue lolling sending great drops of saliva splattering on his guests dark robes.
Fidgit sighed, annoyed at the offending goo on his raiment, as Redcap finally turned to face him. "My pets are making short work of the blocked tunnel” The chief stated. “Soon we will enter the ancient caverns the stunties so foolishly disturbed and we can pave the way for the great Waaargh." Fidgits left eye twitched as his chief just took credit for his ingenious scheme. "Forget not that which the flames have shown me, oh mighty Redcap, the stunties have been forewarned, a straggler survived an untimely raid by the bigunz, and they are even now readying their defenses."
Redcap snorted and spit derisively, "Well we won't give them time to muster. We will strike straight for their meager defenses, blow them to pieces and then we will engulf them in a tide of tooth and claw. Da scuttlahz will feed on juicy stunti meat and I, Chief Redcap will open the way for Warlord Trollclubba".
Fidgit rolled his eyes in disgust, he felt unease as he knew the dwarves had awakened the hold guardians, the spirits of the Flame whispered it to him. He would save their forces yet again, the chief would have to respect his mighty magic and perhaps the fool would simply meet with an 'accident', these things happened on the field of Battle. "As you say oh mighty chief Redcap", Fidgit bowed low, hidding his wicked sneer, and retired to his tipi. He had spells and components to prepare...

The Battle Report (Honor!)

The Keg Wars

Twas before midnight that the Ol' Patrollers came marching to the Holds mines entrance. They had earlier pushed a supply of powder kegs into the treacherous cavern entrance, by orders of Stonespori. Stonespori asked them if they had found anything in the Cavern. "Ai, a wee spider and his younglings, with some gobbo scum", they answered undisturbed.

“The stoicism of those veterans will be the doom of me some day”, Stonespori thought. As calm as he could, he said: "Right, let's move out lads, and take the Roaster with yous".

To his annoyance Stonespori saw the Ol' Patrollers pushed the kegs out much further then needed, and the gobs already came rushing towards them from all sides. The cavern proved to be particularly unstable and each turn stalactites fell from the ceiling like massive stone arrows. Treacherous! He saw a big spider on the left, then some dreadful mouth-monsters, more spiders, more mouth-monster, a spear unit that looked well equipped, and a mage in an archer unit on the right. “The low ceilings won’t help their bow shooting”, Stonespori thought as he moved his Keepers of the Undervault up quickly, on the right flank.

1 Into the Cavern

He trusted his Guardians and Gerybeards to deal with the spiders, supported by their Flamecannon, and Uki and Oki Dör. The last he saw of Uki was an exploding fireball, that spread out to Oki! Ooof, he thought, best get into combat quick, those gobs brought nasty magic and a lot of biters. He moved his elite watch past the reach of that small spear unit, drawing in a chief Goblin riding a mouth-monster together with more of those critters. “Revenge, revenge for Haugspori’s honor, fight me slime!” He boasted loud. The chief with the red cap did not deny him his honor, and in a harsh but short battle he slew the chief, and send the critters running. After running them down, the hit the archers unit. But the Shaman sneaked out of it and hid behind a pillar.

2 Greenskins rush in

5 Stonespori's Revenge

The metalfists were ordered to go after the not-so-wee-spider-afterall, but got confused and stayed in the centre, the trustworthy but dumb brutes. But Oki sought after the big legs first, and showered it in a whirlwind of axe blades, wounding it once! Then he died a glorious death, wounding the beast in a final blow. This apparently shocked the crew of The Roaster so bad, that the fled, even under the calming presence of the greybeards (Really, you ask? Yes, really). Soon the powder kegs were burning, and exploding, sending a shockwave through the hold, collapsing the entrance. The big spider was stuck behind a pillar, and after the Ol' Patrollers smashed a herd of mouth-monsters, they attacked the big spider in the flank. Taking it down to its last wounds, the spider miraculously stayed in the fight. Next turn, it took out many a greybeard and send them running, through two goblin units, decimating the unit to two bodies.

IMG 8883

4. Seekers Dream

The Guardians could not assist the graybeards, and were fighting some spear gobs. First they dexterously avoided a very large mouth-monster. As the Guardians where stomping down gobs, they saw the big Spider coming in their flank. This elevated the Guardians to their true form, as they smashed the spider's head in, and crushing the last gobs. Stonespori took a mighty lead with his elite unit and caught the herd on spider riders, taking it down in a rain of axe blows.

6 Mid Battle

He saw the Shaman run off, and ordered the Guardians to dig toward the Hold mines. One Grudge settled. Now he had to make a move on the Greenskins to send a message: The Dwarfs of Nevaz Thekk are not be messed with.

So, now is the chance to strike out to the Greenskins, and Haugspori is ready for a fight again!

Scenario 3: The Night Raid

Army Selection

  • Regular force according to T9A rules for 2.250 pts, 750 of which can come from one of the two previous lists.

  • The general must be one of the two generals from the previous scenario’s.

  • No Lord characters allowed.

  • No Wizard Masters allowed.

  • No more than 600 pts can be spent on characters.

  • Only one unit can be larger than 500 pts

  • Winds of magic are 2D3

  • Dwarfs cannot take war machines

Special Scenario Rules

  • Night fighting rules:The distance for calculating shooting and charging from ‘light’ into the ‘dark’ is doubled.

  • Dwarfs take the orcs by surprise: Orcs deploy first, Dwarfs automatically get the first turn.

  • Leave None Alive - The Dwarfs are here to send a brutal message; and the Greenskins are ferociously territorial. When calculating the combat results, only count the kill points. Each character counts as 100 extra, banners as 50 extra and champion as 25 extra.

  • That Moment of Greatness - One of your characters gains a random Buff:  1,2)+1WS or BS, 3,4) +1Ld  5) +1A 6) +1W for the duration of this battle.

The Tribal Settlement

At the start of the battle roll a d6 and apply the results for the game:

  1. Higha Ritualz - The Dwarfs attack during a shamanic soop drinking rite. The soop pot explodes into a green fume-nado. The tornado starts in the centre of the Greenskin-player’s deployment zone, place a small template to mark the spot and immediately moves 2d6”in a random direction.move and the Dwarf player both choose to give one of their infantry units “frenzy and -1T” or “stubborn but can’t use inspiring presence”.

  2. No Rhezt?! - The Dwarfs attack during the night, and the Greenskins need to scramble to the squeaking of their Gnashers .The Greenskin players can chose to give one of his infantry “no armour and +xM, where x is the amount of save lost”.

  3. Weir Trees - Randomly place two forest on the battlefield, by scattering them 2D6 from the centre of a table-half. Randomly pick one of those forests. That forest comes to life and is hostile towards Greenskin and Dwarf alike. Troops with Strider can move through freely. All other units that (also partially) passes through it take a DT(1) test. The other is a Fungal-growth. It does D6 toxic attacks to any non-gnashers moving through it. Gnashers become frenzied after moving through a Fungal-growth.

  4. Sabotage! - Place three unmanned orc warmachines 3”onto the table and at least 12” apart. The Dwarfs score double VP for charging (and destroying) these.

  5. Settle That Feud - Both players chose one enemy scoring-unit. If they destroy that unit, they gain double its points. If it survives, the controlling player receives half its points as VP.

  6. Patrolz - One Greenskin scoring-Unit is re-deployed as ‘scouts’. They may not be deployed inside the Orc Deployment zone. But may be deployed outside 12”of any enemy unit (because of the cover of Night).

Scenario Special Objectives

Sometimes a unit taunts the enemy so bad, it drives them mad with unstoppable rage.

  • Pre-game: after vanguard moves, select an enemies scoring unit that is not a warmachine. All your units must declare a charge on that unit if it is within charging range in your movement phase. A unit may restrain itself on a successful leadership test that can be modified by IP and can not be rerolled by the BSB.

  • Victory-Conditions: the player which Taunting unit caused the most charges that reached the unit successfully, wins the secondary objective. A charge by a scoring unit counts as two charges.

The Battlefield

The Orc Camp is a zone of "light", marked with torches. This influences "Night fighting rules", see special rules.
