What do people think of the skirmish rules up for pre-order? I'm sure there could be some awesome dispossessed units for that.

I'll definitely be picking up a copy when I get the chance. It's dirt cheap so it can't hurt.

Would be good, and if anything it's great to see something new.

I've already pre-ordered it, and looking forward to seeing what's inside of it. From from what I've heard the game's premise places it in Shadespire, so it might be this generation's version of Mordheim or 'Frostgrave with Stormcast'. I'm just hoping Forge World releases a pdf allowing their models to be used in it as well. My Dawi Zharr force wouldn't mind getting a crack at exploring this dead city too.

Yeah me too. I have a fimir army so would love to have them lumbering around there.

I thought they might do a .pdf release of the armies like they did with Shadow War, but it seems that every model for AoS will be in the skirmish game with rules. It really does sound like just a tweak to the rules to make AoS a skirmish game. This is even getting me thinking about doing some fantasy painting again. Hope it does well - they really need to give it a better name though, 'Skirmish' is just kind of cheesey, it's like if they named AoS Large Scale War Game.

Not all models are allowed in Skirmish. A lot of the larger models and artillery are not available.

Also here is a video review of the Skirmish book if you all have not seen it.

Having moved away from ranked battles into skirmish games lately (malifaux, mordheim and frostgrave) I really like the news of a new skirmish supplement.

I am however really worried that this, or a similar future product, may be the 'new mordheim' as everybody keeps saying. The comparison is obvious and I suppose for anybody who plays AoS this wont be bad news at all.

Yet, I was really looking forward to GW revisiting the Old World through specialist games and letting us see what new models and modular scenery buildings they could release all set in an Empire (gothic low fantasy german city) setting.

I do think that my hopes of seeing anything set in the old world again are wishful thinking at best. What does anybody else think?

Bought the book today and will be having a trial game later this week. Tricky decisions on what to take, especially on their recommended low renown for a campaign.

I was going to pre-order the book, but I did not fell like paying $10 shipping for a $10 book. I might get it later on.

Exactly, it will be in stores in any case. The book is thin but decent for such a price.

Sadly the closest GW store is an hour and a half away. I could try my local game store, but they don't seem to keep much Warhammer stuff in stock.

I picked up my copy of the book and have read it. While the models currently in production have points costs, the legacy models aren't so lucky. However, to calculate the Renown costs is quite simple:

Unit Cost = (Unit price listed in General's Handbook divided by minimum Unit Size) divided by 5= Renown Cost per model

Hero Cost= Unit price listed in General's Handbook divided by 5= Renown Cost per model

In cases of decimals, I round up, so a Slayer which would cost 2.4 rounds up to 3 Renown Points per model.

Some of their math may be based on prices listed in the upcoming revised 'General's Handbook', as other folk noted discrepancies on other armies.

As for the fluff, it is Mordheim or Frostgrave redux, set in the ruins of Shadespire, which is fine by me, I can adapt this stuff anyway I wish. Starting campaign uses 25 Renown Points as a base, which means a starting force of maybe three or four, maybe five or six figures tops, although Skaven and Grots could inflate that to about ten, and 'pickup games' being 50-100 Renown Points.

Yeah, this is my current thought for a skirmish starter warband:
Runelord
Longbeard old guard with shield
Longbeard musician with shield
Irondrake ironwarden with torpedo

Not sure on it though, might switch the irondrake for a hammerer keeper of the gate, and swap the longbeard musician for a quarreller veteran.

Seems like a nice tight unit of rock hard dwarfs, I was worried about the range of the Torpedo, but it's the same as a crossbow. Are you likely to face many monsters though? If so it'll be like bringing a small war machine!
I'd perhaps be concerned by the lack of wounds compared to say, a greenskin warband might have, but then, that is ever the way of the dwarven race.

I was mainly thinking of taking out the enemy hero as that's the main thing with multiple wounds. Though verses rat ogres and similar it would be helpful. I'd love to be able to include a gyrobomber as that thing would be a gold mine in skirmish.

Unless I'm mistaken the Torpedo only gains D3 wounds if the enemy has the 'Monster' keyword.

I would love to see a gyrobomber converted to show a small warband clustered inside, all dropping bombs and throwing axes down at the enemy! Just using the rules for one bomber, but fluffwise your warband use it as a tiny mobile fortress. Loads of barrels and baggage roped to the sides for the long journey.
Well done Rye0006, you're the first person who has ever made me consider buying a gyro-anything!
Now I have to return to the mine and copy out 'I will not trust technology' a hundred times...

It's D3 damage all the time, D6 against monsters. Your conversion idea sounds very cool for a skirmish model, I suggest you get crafting! 😉
Glad that I'm playing the devil on the shoulder. 😈

Rat ogres lack the monster keyword.
