Ok, 8th is still very much alive in my area and I am going to a couple of tournaments soon. One small, one large. I want to take the same list to both. Maximum 4 warmachines and max 450 points in a unit is really the only comp worth mentioning for this one. I am tired of losing all the time with my fluffy Slayer lists (last 40-ish player tournament I went to, I almost came last!). So here is a list which is hopefully as filthy as I can make it.

+ Heroes +

Master Engineer [Brace of Dwarf Pistols]
[Rune of Stone]

Runesmith [Shield]
[Fiery Ring of Thori, Rune of Speed, Rune of Spellbreaking (1st rune), Rune of Stone]

Runesmith [Shield]
[Rune of Parrying, Rune of Spellbreaking (1st rune), Rune of Spellbreaking (2nd rune), Rune of Stone]

Thane [Shield]
Battle Standard Bearer [Master Rune of Grugni]

+ Core +

[Champion, Musician]
28x Longbeard [Shields]
Standard Bearer [Rune of Sanctuary (1st rune), Rune of Stoicism]

Quarrellers
15x Quarreller [Shields]

+ Special +

Cannon
[Rune of Burning, Rune of Forging]

Cannon
[Rune of Forging]

Grudge Thrower
[Rune of Accuracy, Rune of Penetrating]

Gyrocopter

Gyrocopter

28x Hammerers [Champion, Standard Bearer]

+ Rare +

Organ Gun
[Rune of Accuracy, Rune of Forging]

5x Rangers

So it is a standard gunline, I think. I actually have never played a Gunline before (I always think they are a little dull) but my friends have convinced me that losing all the time with fluffy slayers and bugman is just as boring ;)

How would you improve it? Any tips on actually playing it would be greatly appreciated too :)

You could consider dropping:

Four longbeards and four hammerers. A stubborn longbeard unit can hold its ground just fine, and the Hammerers are only, if possible, going to be used for flanking, thus not needing too many figs, but still have enough to withstand enemy fire/magic.
Perhaps also consider dropping the champion, as you pay too much for just a single attack, since the others can accept challenges just fine.

With those points, you could almost get another gyro, what does your army tick in at points wise?, or eight more quarrellers. The big unit you'd now gain, you could split in two. Sure, you'd get an extra drop, but you have another unit to guard war machines, shoot chaff, re direct etc, and thus keeping your gyros (and essentially your rangers) busy, harassing enemy units or hunting.
You could even turn of them into thunderers, to help pling off those units which are a bit more sturdy.

Crikey, that is gold! Thanks for the advice. I am going to have a play with those ideas. Since I don't have another Gyrocopter model, I think i'll try and squeeze in some thunderers (so two small chaff-killers of Quarrellers and Thunderers). You're totally right about the stubborn units.
