hindsight: I was so tired I forgot my hammerers are stubborn. This means that although there were only three hammerers and my BSB left, I could have stayed in another round. That would not have mattered much, since his Knights and charriot had 16 attacks before I could strike, but at least he had to work for it more ;). Hindsight 2: I should have left the BSB with the smith (my former deathstar unit) to rearguard the hammerers. The BSB had a 3+ (5+) AS and a 4+ WS, should have been enough to withstand the charriot. Then my 16 (or 18, not sure) hammerers should have killed the Knights easy, with two S6 attacks on the front row and a few supporting attacks. Much to learn!!

Not sure what you mean; I mean 3 x RoBattle, SB and BSB in one unit (+5 combat res.).

He's confused by your description. The convention of 3x RoBattle usually means you have three on one standard, weapon, warmachine, etc.

I think what you have is 2xRoB on the BSB and 1 RoB on the SB.

hear hear - needed grugni - no point going without grugni - WoC will mow down my BSB and here goes my +4 of combat res.

I agree. Grungi is a must to keep the BSB alive.
But I think your math is wrong. By my calculations there is no way you can get more than +3 CR with your BSB.

The third on the same banner "just" gives you, fight in extra rank.

wow - I dream of a horde of great beards with three runes of battle ......

but how to let you BSB live ??? ... with shield he will be 3+ AS 5/6+ WS for survivability ... I thought about fielding an extremely fighty lord next to him, to mow down threats, but that will add another 250+ pts to the unit ...

In bus, it's easy.

Anything other than that, is kinda tricky. But no matter what you choose, the only option is putting him on the corner.
You don't have to use this in horde, if you don't want to spend a huge amount of points. But the fewer models in the front, the more attacks can the enemy direct at the BSB.
The downside to horde formation, is the huge point cost. But one could argue, it's, point wise, the best way to utilise it.
In my experience, you need a lot of bodies. Only a 5+ save, no ward against shooting and striking last. All those, contribute to heavy losses. Of course, there are certain answers to this, but to me, it's better off with Warriors.

In bus, you don't have to spend as many points on bodies, as you have to with the others. The spare points can, like you point out yourself, be used to get a defensive lord. To the second rank, goes the BSB.
Ofcourse, the enemy could then just strike at the champion. It's a matter of taste, but one might want to consider throwing another character (smith) in their, as meat shield, should the champ die.

Ah I see, thanks. So it will be like a Thane (1), champion (1), musician (1), SB (1) and smith (1) and the BSB will be moved to the second rank? I like it. Since a bus is small, the third rune of battle will be worth it, for a total of 5 front ranks attacks and 10 second/third rank attacks.

Yeah, or clear a hero in favour of the Lord, for two spaces.
But this is where one should consider...is it worth paying so much, in terms of points and the ward save...for five extra attacks.

indeed a good question - I ran this bus (22 stoic greatbeards, Lord and Battle Thane) in battlescribe and it comes down to 830 points. And there are only 25 bodies on the table. Ok, this unit is hard to beat in combat (to put it mildly), but can be shot to shreds by magic or artillery...  Now check this out: for 830 point one can also field 25 stoic greatbeards + 24 stubborn hammerer + gyrocopter..... aha.
