So, hello everyone! Just starting dwarfs, basically the new models in the range look awesome and I couldn't resist any longer.

Which kind of brings me to my problem, I really like the new longbeards/hammerers and ironbreakers/drakes, but the dwarf warriors and thunderers/quarrellers... well, they're not bad, but they almost don't look like part of the same army. So, I was thinking of trying to convert some thunderers/quarrellers from longbeards. Thoughts so far:
(1) Build longbeards and glue missile weapons to thier backs to make missile troops (especially as quarrellers may have great weapons anyway, and they have heavy armour now) but that's not exactly cheap.

(2) Using the longbeard heads and shoulder pads on normal dwarfs to make them look a bit more armoured and part of the same force, but I'm not sure how well that'll turn out.

(3) I'm out of ideas.

So, basically, I wondered if anyone else has tried this sort of thing, and has any advice as to what works and what doesn't. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

(Apologies if this has been addressed before, I tried searching the forums but didn't spot anything, or I just wasn't using the right runes in the search box.)

Similar to your ranged weapons on the back idea, you could always use the longbeard bodies/heads/arms but somehow put ranged weapons in their hands? I'm sure it would look great if you could do it, but it could be pretty tricky. What are you like with greenstuff?

What I've done is to take longbeard head+body, quareller xbow (right arm), ironbreaker left arm with attachments from different stuff (pipe, arrow, beerjug, throwing axe - whatever you want really..)
On the back I glued my 2h axes, using the tip from longbeard 2h and the shaft from quarellers hw, to make it look more of a 2h rather than a 1h. One shoulderpad on the arm wearing the xbow.
These are my rangers btw. I won't go 2h on my quarellers, but shield from the quareller box(and probably another head).

For my warriors I mixed a bit.
2h warriors -
Body from hammerer, head from ironbreaker and axe from longbeard, nothing else, no shoulderpads.

Warriors with 1h and shield I go longbeard body, hammerer head (with the hammers in the beard cut of) only the axes (I don't like blunt weapons, only my command group gets blunt) and the shield from normal warriors.
The small details matters. Since I use the same body for many of my groups, I have to make sure longbeards/warriors/quarellers get different shields.
No shoulders on normal warriors, different heads.
Since you have:
Hammerer head
Ironbreaker head
Longbeard head
(irondrake head, which I'm not including due metalbeard)
Make sure to use them right.
For instance -
Hammerers have their own head, therefore I don't take hammerer heads for other dwarfs with 2h. Which leads to warriors with 1h and shield.
Longbeards have their own head, that's why I put their heads on my rangers. They don't have shield and they have 2h on their back.
Warriors with 2h?
Baaically it's only ironbreaker heads left to fill that spot!

When I get home I can upload some pictures to show you how mine turned out. I am really satisfied with the results.
Despite they all use the same body, no one looks like the other one.
Hope this helps.

Strykerr

Only thing that I regret is that I don't have hoods on my rangers..
But to be fair (honest)
I can't be arsed to work with greenstuff ;x

Thanks for the replies!

Never used greenstuff before, so not too optimistic about my chances of making something that'll require too much specialist molding at the first try. But ranged weapon dwarf arms on longbeard bodies could work. Part of the problem I'm having is I haven't seen the sprue for thunderers/quarrellers (boxes aren't in stores and the GW website doesn't have sprue pictures) so don't know exactly whats on them, e.g. are the ranged weapons seperate or part of the right arm, for example. Maybe I should just order a box and experiment...

I got them, and I think it's worth it!
