Hi all, long-time Dwarfs player looking to try something new with the 8th edition book. I'll be playing this weekend against three mates in a 2000 point friendly tournament, any and all feedback on the following list would be much appreciated. My opponents will be Daemons of Chaos, the new Wood Elves and either High Elves or Orcs and Goblins (we never know which he'll take).

Thane BSB with two Runes of Battle, Ancestor Rune, Oath Stone, shield (joins Ironbreakers) = 208

Runesmith with Rune of Spellbreaking and two Runes of Iron (joins Warriors) = 130

30 Warriors, full command and shields = 300

30 Warriors, full command and shields = 300

30 Ironbreakers, full command and Strollaz' Rune = 485

3 Gyrocopters, two with Vanguard = 280

2 Cannons, one with Rune of Forging, one with Rune of Forging and Burning = 295

Total = 1998 points

The idea is the Gyrocopters harass and distract the enemy, taking care of chaff or redirectors, while the Ironbreakers advance up the centre to form an anvil. With a Thane BSB with an Oathstone, 2 Runes of Battle and Ancestor Rune, I'm counting on them taking charges against one or even two enemy units until the Warrior regiments arrive to act as hammers. If there's room, I'll deploy at least one of the warriors as a horde to maximise their impact.

In terms of what I can expect, our Wood Elf player has complained about forest spirits getting nerfed in the new book and enthused about how the options for his Glade Guard give him solutions against all of us, so I'm counting on much shooting, at least some of which will be AP -3. Hopefully Vanguard Gyrocopters will distract him, and if not, steam guns should do fine against low toughness, low armour elves (ditto for HEs). Our Daemons player will probably field a Skullcannon, Daemonettes and maybe Plaguebearers, and he's proud of having stumbled across some buffing spells which I'll need to stop (hence the Runesmith). The last guy is totally unpredictable, he could run a cheap Orcs and Goblins gimmick like a Night Goblin archer deathstar with poisoned arrows or a High Elf list with a dragon, we can never tell.

There are a couple of small tweaks I'm considering and I'd like to get some opinions:

- Should I drop the Runesmith for a fighty Thane to bolster one of the Warriors?

- Should I drop the Smith's Runes of Iron or shave off a few Warriors from each regiment to pay for Great Weapons, or maybe an upgrade to Longbeards?

- Should I drop a Gyrocopter to put the MR of Grungni on the Thane BSB, to give him some protection and his regiment against shooting?  Could also drop the Ancestor Rune to add GWs to Warriors if I did this.

Any other, more general, feedback is of course welcome. Thanks in advance!

You've got a decent start, but I have a few suggestions for you based on my own experiences with a full strollaz list.

Starting with the BSB, he's on an oathstone so he will have to issue/accept challenges, but he has no ward save.  Drop the runes of battle and give him MRoGrungni, also, personally I would give him the Strollaz rune, and change the Ironbreakers to have Rune of Stoicism.  This will make them stubborn on ld10, which is not going anywhere, especially with an oathstone in the unit.

Don't drop the runesmith for another thane, you'll need the anti-magic support, not to mention adding AP to the unit he joins.  The rune setup you have for him is fine, but I personally prefer Rune of Stone and a shield.  I've had a lone runesmith with that combo weather entire turns of dark elf shooting. (Maybe shield, stone, iron, spellbreaking.  that will stop a lot of incoming damage)

I would give one or both of the warrior units greatweapons instead of shields.  The extra punch helps out tremendously, especially against T3 armies like the ones listed.

I would personally split up the warmachines for versatility.  Instead of dubcannons, why not a cannon and an organ gun?

Thanks for the advice, I think I will make those changes to the BSB, and Stone, Iron, Spellbreaking for the Smith.

With the Warriors, I could either go two units of 30 with Great Weapons or one unit of 40 Longbeards, probably also with GWs (though they'd be S5 on the charge without GWs, so maaaybe that'd be overkill?), and since LBs get a magic banner they could also take Strollaz.  I'm concerned that only two blocks in a 2000 point game could get outflanked or present too few targets for magic and/or shooting.  What do you think?

Good thought about the war machines, with some of these changes I'm sure I can find room for an Organ Gun

Normally I'd say go for the longbeards with Strollaz, however, that week leave your war machines defenseless, so I would say you should keep something near them to help them out. Either core shooters with shields or gws, or even warriors.

Listen to SubTwo, he's the strollaz whisperer

I think you could go 30ish shieldbeards (or a few less longbeards) and some core shooting to protect WM? That way you can put BSB in IB with grugni+strollaz, stoic on IB banner, and strollaz on longbeards.

Keep the Runesmith. If anything, add another.

You will struggle with monsters, high-T etc. To that end, I say keep the 2 cannons.

Haha, cool, thanks guys.  I'm going with 2 x 30 Warriors with GWs, one of which I can leave behind to protect the war machines, and I also found room for a second Runesmith and an Organ Gun by taking out a Gyrocopter.  You're right to flag high toughness monsters etc but our Daemons player never seems to take them, so unless our High Elves player takes a dragon (unlikely) I should be OK.

Thank you both for your help, I'm feeling reasonably confident.  Will post a battle report after the weekend!
