With our previous armybook people fielded them in large units (28+), but now a lot us use them in smaller units (12-24). Do you find giving them shields for some extra protection versus shooting (and magic) helpful (or even a must)?

Normally I have them covered by a Grungi.  So I don't really see that it is necessary.  People want to shoot at them...sure.  But then, I'm shooting back.  And I know who will win in a shootout.

I am building a unit of 14 as a flank support/ banner caddy. It's actually worth it at that point size.

I've only done disposable tens so far, so no. The save is mighty handy against missile fire, but most massed missiles are merely strength three, minus all the misses. (Alliteration is awsome.) If 9th edition allows them to choose bewteen HW&S or the GWpns then I would say it's an auto-include.

I never give them shields, they are too expensive anyway - especially since current ETC rules limit single unit cost to 450 points. MR of Grungi should be enough :)

This. I never give my Hammerers shields, but if this happens I will every time.

I think that smaller units of Hammerers are the new way to go. I just can't seem to cross over to that in a way it would give me security in may battles.

In smaller units Shields might be a good way to give them some more endurance from ranged attacks.

In bigger units, specially with ETC restrictions in mind, it becomes a commodity I can not afford, just as Chase said.

If the 9th edition ... well, I do not like daydreaming about it. I can only say that in 7th and 6th I used shields on Hammerers, and I seldom had their great weapons see the battle.
