Greetings fellow warriors and craftsmen. This is a fallout to all those dwarfish master engineers and brilliant craftsmen, black smiths and goldsmiths, sword smiths and veteran warriors.
Since the new dwarf update has brought us no centrepieces for our throngs,
I have decided to start this topic so that I, and also others, may learn of ways in which we can convert and scratch build models and make Great War machines to bolster our ranks and strike fear into the hearts of green skins (and elves) everywhere.
I am but a beardling, not a master craftsman, and so please contribute your ideas.

I think the best thing is to work out what you want as your centrepiece. I find looking at the big pictures in the army book are great references for ideas. Flicking through it now I see large airships on pg30, pg 32 has an awesome looking massive cannon and even on other pictures you can see things that you can imagine coming to life like the great dragon head on page 4 and 64. Though really the only model I want is the Dwarf Lord on the cover or the one on page 34.
Once you find out what you want you need to plan. Jumping straight into a conversion will usually result in lost models, time, money and enthusiasm. So sit down with a drink of your choice, sketch (you dont need to be good, just enough so you know later what it is) and think, use the net for real life things that are similar and sketch some more.
Once you have done this then you can head onto making it. With the sketches in place you can easily find models that match what you want as being able to keep on track with what you need next. If there is nothing that will suit you then its time to jump into scratch building with plasticard/rod which is difficult but you need to start somewhere. When doing this make sure you have good measurement and a metal rule. Without these things you are bound to fail as you will be continuously trying to straighten the edge until the piece of plastic is no more.
You will get tired, frustrated and upset during this process, just put it to one side for another time, this saves your work from becoming a pile on the floor! However every project you undertake makes you better at it. Trust me, I know this from experience, year of it in fact. Now when I get to a problem, I light my pipe, sit back, open some ale and think it through til I get another idea.
Good Luck and I cannot wait to see your models!

I have started building a zeppelin that looks kind of like the one in the new army book. I will post pictures when I figure out how. (Whenever I try, it comes up with errors) I have built the derigable out of a small rugby ball and some cloth, and a hull by converting a small model ship. I am thinking of mounting a cannon or maybe a bolt thrower on the hull.

You can check out my blogposts of my thunderbarge. It still isn't finished though but it has already seen battle and it performed brilliantly.

Interestingly while Dwarves are the one closest to my Heart of all my Armies, its the one with the least Conversions. It slike I have a different focus with them, more on the collecting and Painting Side.
There isn`t a single Miniature in my space Marine army that isn`t converted, but they do not stand up Paintingwise to my Dwarves.
Also a big Part of the Throng is Old Pewter which I won`t convert, although many of the weapons look rather silly... Blades that will clobber People to Putp rather than cut anything.
The biggest "conversion" so Far is a WIP of my KIng and calling that a Conversion is allready stretching the Term.
I would love to get my Hands on some of the Thronebearers of the newer Thogrimm as Shieldbearers and personal bodyguards for him.
Maybe even having them together on a Base, him on a rock rather than a shield...sometimes the notion of shieldbearers sounds silly to me,nobody can fight from up there without crashing unkingly to the Ground...but then I love the Model...
Edit:
Oh yeah, and the Pony Cart I started and never finished. I managed to drop a rulebook on it and didn`t bother with repairing it, maybe I will finish it in the Future..
