Hi guys!

I would like to ask your advice, wich do you think that is the best formation for dwarf units of 40 miniatures?

I have a tournament by the end of the month, I'm a little noob in the 8th edition and I don't have any time these days to make tests and try different formations for my army... I've already have planned my list, and the units are: 40 gw warriors, 40 gw rangers and 40 hammerers (it's a 2500 points tournament...).

I know that the question is very general and maybe there is no perfect option that works for all the situations... But I would like to know you opinion about it, is it better a front line of 10 miniatures in order to work as a horde or a tighter formation with a front line of 6 miniatures and in which units??

Thank you in advance!

3 hordes generally will work best obviously depends on terrain though

You'll want to deploy any units that size with Great Weapons in horde formation: 10 wide by 4 deep. You'll get the most efficient damage output that way.

The three hordes should work well just make sure you have lots of artilery to back them up and let the enemy come to you preferably in a corner. For the ranger may even look at making them longbeards and giving them throwing axes and a rune of slowness, this can really ruin someones days when they charge and recieve 30 str 5 hits in return then they don't even make it so you can either throw again or charge and claim the combat bonus.

That would be a lot of sixes rolled, especially since I'm unsure how a unit ten models wide can dish out 30 shots in the first place...

Thank you all for the answers!!

The truth is that I was thinking about changing the ranger unit for a (smaller... 30 maybe?) unit of longbeard rangers with throwing axes... Would you recommend it or it'd be better using the 40 rangers in this tournament in order to learn how to use them??

I'm tempted by the longbeard option, but I'm afraid that I'd be too risky or demanding too much strategy (that I still don't have in this moment...)

Thank you!

I'd stick with the 40 for now. Longbeard Rangers with Throwing Axes are a fairly fluffy use of points, usually not a great idea for a tournament unless you're running an ambush list, which you're not.
