Lovely work Alisk. Do you mind telling me how you did the off-white on the crewman with the flag? Both his tunic and the flag as they seem to be done differently.

Hello Falgrin. Many thanks!
Re. the cream colours:
For the upper half of the flag (and the gunner's sleeves), I basically followed this 'how to paint white' tutorial, which I found pretty handy:
I didn't use the exact same colours, but pretty similar (I used a sand colour as the base coat, then added this mixed with increased amounts of ivory until I was using pure ivory colour; for this I used Vallejo paints)
For the padded jacked, I base coated it with a bone colour (possibly GW screaming skull), then washed it with a watered down brown ink (I think GW seraphim sepia), then re-painted the raised areas with the bone colour, and highlighted with bone mixed with Vallejo ivory.
I hope that helps.
All best,
David.

Hello everyone again.
Well, I've been trying to get dwarfs painted as and when (though I'm also dabbling in other projects now - blasphemy!). There's nothing too revolutionary which is being added to the army this time (the odd character, etc, the odd unit finished), but the other day I got a bit bored and decided to take the whole army out of the box and have a look at it all together.
It is fairly rare when this happens, as the house is too small to have models just sitting around out of storage, and I seldom get chance to play very big games where I can use much of the army. Anyway, I found it quite gratifying to be able to see 2 years or so of work all together like this. I thought I'd take a few photos. Some of these things have been seen before earlier in the thread, so apologies for the occasional repeats.
This is the 'royal court' of Karak Zhufdrin, as it were - King Grettir, born aloft by his faithful shieldbearers, his younger brother Ketil, who carries the hold's standard, his elder son and the crown prince, Gunnar, who wields a hammer and wears a winged helmet, and Grettir's hot-headed younger son, Ingvar, wielding two axes. I'm looking for dwarf queen models now, for Queen Astrid and Crown-Princess Helgar (or maybe Gunnhilda, I haven't decided yet), but that'll have to wait for a bit.

Nicely done! I am a full-metal mini-ist, and those marauder miners are sexy; nice addition of flag to the pole. Longbeard shield replacements are nice and the old anvil guard fit in very nicely- may have to borrow that idea. Perfect standards, and may the hammerer conversion remain glued forever. I gave up on the big face banner. Thanks for sharing!

What a great army! Those banners are really looking impressively crisp and ties all the units together really well. This is one of the best painted dwarf armies I've seen.

Love it! I agree, so many great old metal figures!

Thank you for the kind words everybody - it means a lot.
As a whole, I'm not sure how well painted they all are - there's a lot of variety of quality - for instance the photo of the four runesmiths, where the one on the far left (the one with the white beard trailing on the ground and the big staff) was painted about 2 years ago, and is a lot less good than the other three painted relatively recently. I'm a bit unsure as to whether I want to re-paint him - I could do a lot better now, but part of me likes having this sense of progression in an army - it makes it more of an ongoing project, I guess.
A lot of the units here appear earlier in this thread with more close up pictures etc, if anyone's interested.
Anyway, the next things to be painted are some thunderers and hand weapon and shield warriors. As is very clear, there are only 3 core units in this army thus far, and an over-abundance of 'elite' (i.e. WS5, S4) dwarfs, which isn't very fluffy, really. I'll be doing these two units for the unit painting comp which is coming up.
Thanks again for all the kind words, and with my very best wishes,
David.

Just noticed this. Absolutely loving the quality of painting. The banners themselves are really nice, so nice that I might use a few of them for inspiration.
The old longbeards look stunning, almost as if they have been lifted from the old 6th edition book. Congrats to you!

Hello everyone.
I'm sorry for the 6-month plus hiatus. Age of Sigmar had killed my painting mojo, if I'm honest, and I'd been working on various other things hobby-wise.
Anyway, after pushing 6 months of being variously incredulous, angry and depressed about the general state of GW, I'm trying to get back into painting my dwarfs in a more meaningful way. I'm focussing more on individuals than units at present - we'll see how things pan out down the line.
Anyway, firstly I'm posting up some really nice dwarfs produced by Black Chapel Miniatures. They're some of the nicest dwarfs I've ever painted. Some of them have been done for a while (some can be seen in a more zoomed out way on the whole army shots above), but I thought I'd post up some close-ups of them here as I'm very fond of them.
Sorry to do a bit of a plug, but Black Chapel is a really excellent small miniatures company, and I'd urge people to support them - they've got some lovely figures, and some more great ones in the pipeline.
Also, we've got the new(ish) GW dragon slayer model. My wife got me this guy as a stocking filler for Christmas, and I have to say I'm a massive fan of it. OK, he does look a lot like Obelix, but he was fun to paint, and I think he's come out OK. I'm slightly torn over whether he looks dynamic, leaping at the enemy, or slightly drunkenly falling over, but either way, I think he's OK.
This is the first (and so far only) dwarf I've painted this year, and I really enjoyed giving him a lick of paint - indeed, after a very long hiatus, he's actually given me my dwarf painting mojo back, which can only be a good thing.
Once again, comments and suggestions for improvements eagerly sought!
Finally, I've just noticed that nearly all the pictures have vanished. This is because I uploaded them via imageshack, and when they moved onto a far too expensive paid model (I was OK with US$1 a month for what I did, but they changed this to want a lot more), I stopped paying them. I didn't realise that they'd eventually delete my photos...ho hum.
Anyway, rather than go back and re-post new photos of everything, if anyone wants new photos of something in particular, please do let me know, and I'll try to get it posted up.
Thanks again everyone for dropping by, and I'll try to get more painting done in the near future.
Cheers,
David.

You did a fantastic job painting yours. Well done have a tankard of ale on my tab.
I also have nearly all the Black Chapel Dwarves they are the few exception that I have for not acquiring non-metal figures.
Once again well done!!!

Thanks for the kind words guys - it really means a lot. I'm glad you like what I've done

The 2nd wave of Black Chapel dwarfs are in metal (I don't know if the ones I've posted up here will be re-done in metal or kept in resin) - I'll be ordering the newer ones within the week, and I'll be sure to post them up when they're ready.
Thanks for dropping by everyone, and for the kind words,
All best,
David.

I've had my eye on those for a while now as well, they seem to be very nice models. Cool of you to share them, would a picture with a GW dwarf for scale be possible?

Hi Dourin - no problem at all:
I've had my eye on those for a while now as well, they seem to be very nice models. Cool of you to share them, would a picture with a GW dwarf for scale be possible?
Dourin
These are older photos which I'd already uploaded to my gallery, so do not feature the last two Black Chapel figures I'd painted.
Would these do? Or would you like any specific comparison pics?
Basically, they're fine height-wise compared to GW dwarfs, but are more lightly built. As my army isn't very uniform (it is mostly 1995-9 metal, but with quite a lot of 6th-8th ed plastics and some older GW metals too), these figures fit in pretty well, but if you've got a more uniform throng they might stick out a bit more.
All best,
David.
