My last game for the Blood in the Badlands "Spring" season, played last night against High Elves. The guy wrote a somewhat poor list, and is planning on changing it for the Summer season, so I expected to win this match. Still, I don't play against High Elves often, and thought I'd post a report.

My list, roughly:
Runesmith, General (Spellbreaking, defense)
Runesmith (Balance, defense)
Thane BSB (defense)
20 Q Rangers, FC
20 GW Warriors, FC
28 Hammerers, FC (Grungni)
30 HW&SH Longbeards, FC (Battle)
2 Cannons (One Forging/Burning, one Forging)
1 GT (Standard 170pt build)
1 OG
1 Gyro

We're playing by 2400 ETC rules, but I had 100 bonus points to spend this match from my mines. With the bonus points I bought: Engineers for WM, Rune of Battle for Longbeards, Veteran for Rangers, and Cleaving for the Thane.

His list, roughly:
Prince on Griffon (defensive items)
BSB (defensive items)
Level 2 Mage (High Magic, Crystal)
Level 2 Mage (High Magic, Wand)
Level 1 Mage (Fire)
20-25 Swordmasters
20-25 Seaguard
15ish Phoenix Guard
40-50 Spearelves
1 RBT
1 Lion Chariot

No Shadow magic? No Life magic? It's a dwarven birthday!

We rolled Battleline, and alternated to place terrain. He placed a tall, impassable rocky outcrop as close to the center as was allowed, somewhat towards one side of the board. With my next two deployments, I put Mysterious Rivers flowing from it to "corner off" one side of the board. We decided they would use the same "mysterious" roll, to represent being the same river even though I used two deployments to place it. He placed a building on the far other flank, I placed a wide but shallow hill on the side opposite the rivers, he blocked it off with another big impassable terrain chunk.

He ended up choosing the side with the river, and mostly boxed himself in with them. He placed his Swordmasters first, so I placed Longbeards opposite them. He then placed the Chariot, so I hedged my bets and put my warriors on the far side of the impassable terrain, in case he tried something sneaky. He did not, and the rest of our deployment was pretty standard. His Prince is the round "G", and he put one mage in each of SwordMasters, Spears, and SeaGuard. His BSB also went into the Spear block. I put my General-Runesmith and my BSB in the Hammerers, and my backup Runesmith in the Longbeards.

Dwarves Turn 1: I went first, and my GT smashes so many Seaguard that he's left with the mage, his command group, and one extra rank-and-file. My first cannon then proceeds to snipe the mage in that block (the level 2 High Magic that knew an extra spell). My other cannon put two wounds on his chariot, as the Prince was hiding behind terrain. OG was out of range, and the Rangers put a single wound on the RBT. GW Warriors started their long trek into the fight, which they will never reach for the rest of the game. Last time I'll mention them. Hammerers and Longbeards advance, wheeling, so that I could get both the Longbeards and the Organ Gun into the Grungni bubble. (just barely)

High Elves Turn 1: He flies the General up right behind the impassable terrain, still invisible to my cannons. His Phoenix Guard step into the river approaching my Rangers, finding it to be a Boiling Flood! Unfortunately, only one PG dies after ward saves. Everything else marches up. Magic is completely shut down. RBT shoots my Gyro (which I forgot to put in the pic). (It's between the two impassable terrain sections right now, after it marched 20" in my turn.)

Dwarves Turn 2: I finish off the chariot, and kill 3 Swordmasters. Rangers shoot PG, and kill 3. OG finishes off the Seaguard block. Gyro flies behind PG, about 3" away from the RBT. Everything else marches up a bit.

High Elves Turn 2: He charges the PG into the Rangers (S&S kills 2 more), the Spearelves into the Hammerers (they make it, but quite a few die from the flood), and Swordmasters into the Longbeards. General flies over both units to land next to the Swordmasters, where I can't cannon him without making an illegal shot at my own unit. (Well, I could, but I'd have to roll a 2 to hit him, so I'm not going to waste my time) He gets 5 power dice, and blows them all on Flames of the Phoenix on my Hammerers (which can be cast into combat according to my reading, which I know is a bit controversial). It goes IF, and the S10 large template! Flames of the Phoenix kills around 6 Hammerers, and the miscast template hits *ALL FOUR* combat blocks, killing an astounding 7 Hammerers, 3 Longbeards, 4 Swordmasters, and 14 Spear elves, putting a wound on both my Runesmith General and his Mage! Combat is similarly bloody, with the Swordmasters killing swaths of Longbeards, who manage to kill enough that with their bonus ranks and Rune of Battle that they win by 1 CR, the Swordmasters holding. The Hammerers smash the remaining Spear Elves, with my Runesmith killing his Mage with non-challenge directed attacks at I2 before the Hammerers struck! I win combat by a good deal, and he fails the rerollable break test. He rolls a 10 to flee, but I I roll boxcars and catch him. Talk about a bloody phase! The Rangers and Phoenix Guard cause a ton of wounds on each other, the Rangers winning by 1 but the PG holding.

Dwarves Turn 3: My Hammerers reform to face the Swordmasters. My Gyro flames the RBT to no effect. (It's really just hanging out back here in case I need to chase a unit) In shooting, my GT takes a risky shot at his General, and lands perfectly, killing the griffon and putting a wound on the Prince. The OG and Cannons elect not to fire. In combat, my Rangers win combat by a lot, killing all but one PG, who flees successfully past the RBT. The Rangers fail to catch him, but slam into the warmachine. My Longbeards lose the combat with the Swordmasters, but pass a steadfast break test. I yell at the Prince that if he flees the battlefield and agrees not to attack me in the next week, I'll spare his life.

High Elves Turn 3: The High Elf Prince begins his long walk home. He's not liking the idea of rolling on the injury table, and this was a fight I forced on him anyway: He's ready to give truce. My Rangers finish off his RBT, and his PG runs off the board. My Longbeards run down his Swordmasters. He surrenders with just the Prince alive, and we shake hands.

Only a few turns, but it went a lot slower with all the action. (We had a tense first magic phase too, where I managed to shut everything down with some good rolling and my Spellbreaking rune.)

We forgot to bring the Badlands book, so we've not rolled on the Victory and Defeat tables yet, but will do so tonight. Here's hoping for a Regiment of Renown!

Nice battle report Impy, as always.

I don't really understand the guy's list, and his deployment choices.

He deployed incredibly defensive, taking a risk with the river.
Then he advances into it, losing many models!

Well done!

Indeed, and I told him as much during the game. He said he'd reviewed the Mysterious River, and figured since he was at a disadvantage anyway, he'd take the chance and hope for it being something good for him, like the Light-casting version. Still, I wouldn't have put *everything* in it, as fast as high elves are!

The list is notably weak: As I stated in the beginning, he's already planned to change it a great deal, but cannot do so until next week when our "Summer" season begins.

Great win, as with everyone here I am kind of wondering what he was thinking with his deployment.

He's an experienced 40k player, and a smart guy, but he's still relatively new to Fantasy. I've been chatting with him some today, trying to help him improve his tactics. It's to my advantage if he does well in the Summer, since he borders my enemies!

Just a note: I ended up with my Longbeards a "regiment of renown", with Immune to Psychology as a special rule, for my victory reward.

His loss result was that he would have Hatred against me in his next battle. (Which we did not fight, as agreed)

Sweet. The deployment pic pretty muched gave the battle away. :umnik2: Hopefully he gets in the fantasy mindset. I wonder how I would do at 40K now.

So are you guys going to ally now, or just truce between gentlemen?

Blood in the Badlands only allows for one "true" ally, and mine is currently the Good Ogres. (My enemy was the Dark Elves in Spring, and Evil Ogres in Summer)

Mostly we just have a gentleman's truce. He fought a rearguard action for us (the good guys) in the Spring event battle, and did lousy, so frankly I'm not owing him much now. *laughs*
