Thinking about taking the following to a tourney:

Relevant comp:
Unit points cap of 450 points.
Max 2 runes per warmachine.
Max 4 dispel dice generated.
Max 2 auto-dispels.
Special Characters allowed
BSB can take mundane equipment

Thinking of taking one of the following:

Option 1: Five blocks, no drops

Runelord (Spellbreaking, Balance, Brotherhood, Resistance, Preservation, Stone, Striking, Shield)
293

Josef Bugman (General)
155

Thane BSB (Gromril, Resistance, Brotherhood, Furnace (or possibly Fire), GW (not if I take Fire))
165 or 169

28 Longbeards (Rangers, GW, FC, Determination)
437

38 Warriors (Rangers, GW, FC)
443

33 Miners (FC, Steam Drill)
413

20 Miners (FC)
245

20 Miners (FC)
245

The trouble with this list is that it will take a while for the miners to get into combat, and doesn't have much for dealing with monsters (particularly the T8 ones).

Option 2: Runelord with Anvil and four blocks (+ one chaff unit)

As above, but drop one of the 20 miner units down to 6 and add an anvil. Swap brotherhood and striking on the Runelord for another Spellbreaker + Speed or Shielding + Speed

I love the anvil with miners - this gives me a very fast-hitting list.

Option 3: Character Heavy (anti-monster) - three blocks

As option 1 but drop both (or most) of the 20 miner units for a killy lord and a challenge thane.

For the lord I am considering not giving him brotherhood, but running him into the back of one of the ranger units turn 1 or leaving him solo. This allows me to take shieldbearers and gives me more options on the weapon. The Lord needs to be able to take on monsters really.

The Lord would look something like:

Shieldbearers, Shield, Might, Smiting, Fire, Shielding or Resistance.

Challenge Thane is standardly Brotherhood, Challenge, Stone, Shield, Resistance

I think the optimum ambush build would involve two cannon, but I'm going to stick to my traditional dwarf hold fluff on this one and not take them.

I'm going to try out these builds in the next few weeks but would appreciate input.

Cheers

1/ AS you said it - monsters are problematic. Also by not taking more ranger units you are not using Bugman to his full potential.

2/ Runelord and anvil: juicy target and little protection...

3/ No antimagic?? If no, I see a problem.

All 3 should be fun, just depending on opponent lists.

1/ Bugman only allows one additional ranger unit (all lists have 2)

2/ indeed, but rune of shielding stops shooting, and remember, I can deploy rangers protectively as well.

3/ has a lord and runelord....

if you use bugman , your unit of longbeard rangers doesn't count towards your minimum core requirement

Why not drop 2-3 from the biggest miner unit and add another steam drill to one of the smaller ones? You will be in close combat quite soon with the rangers anyway and perhaps with the biggest miner unit so I think you could use all the help to get those miners on the table as soon as possible.

This was a long time ago! Bugmans rangers do count towards core.

In the end I took a killy lord. I had a very tactical game against Ogres against a top player (lost after he managed to avoid my characters - he had the magic item that reveals enemy magic items).

2nd game against HEs I played very badly and lost. My stupidity really after little sleep.

3rd game against lizardmen I had some stupid dice rolls and drew.

Came second from bottom :(. This sort of list would be a lot better without the unit points cap.

Probably needs a lock for threadomancy.

Pg 62. Bugmans Rangers:

... but do count towards the minimum number of Core Troops choices in the army.

OK, 6th/7th edition language, but the principle is the same. Where does it say they don't count?

It's not in the official errata. Why do you think it is wrong? Do later imprints of the 6th Edition dwarf book differ?

The errata is http://www.games-wor...Dwarfs_V1_3.pdf

i've just looked at my other dwarf book , i've got 2 as one was worn out a bit
and in the newer one it says they do count , the older one says they do not count
so i would assume that the new one is correct
