Hello,
Due to a lack of funds my dwarf army is being shelved, not in the traditional sense of not being played, but that I am not able to buy or expand my army any time before next year (mar/apr).
I was wondering if anyone could give me some tactics against chaos and high elves (main armyies I face), such as strategy, useful runes etc.
I have at present.
A thane with an axe and shield (as brought)
2 engineers made from thunderers
2 cannons and crew
16 thunderers,
16 quarrellers
7 miners
20 warriors with HW+S
20 warriors with GW
I guess I can proxy models such as the warriors and thunder/quarrelers for different situations. Otherwise what do people suggest?

That is not a bad collection of models for smaller games.
Do the Thunderers/Quarrellers have FC?
Here's how I would play them :
- Runesmith, SH, RoStone, MroBalance
- Thane, whatever kit you like, preferably a BSB but that's hard to proxy.
=> The Thane is the Thane model, while the Runesmith model can easily be converted from a thunderer/Quarreller by giving the model a modified banner pole. When playing against chaos and HE you NEED anti-magic or there will be no game at all.
- 25 LB, SH, FC, RoDetermination
- 25 Warriors, GW, FC
=> LB are the HW+SH Warrior models with some Thunderes added.
GW Warriors are GW Warriors with some Quarrellers added.
- 10 Thunderers, SH
- 10 Quarreller Rangers, GW
=> I find that using bigger missile units then this is hard to use effectivly, and I think the bodies are more needed in the CC units.
- 7 Miners
- Cannon, RoForging, eng
- Cannon, RoForging, RoFire, Eng
I actually think this list would be very playable. As for tactics I suggest you look at the Battlegronds section for reports against WoC and HE (especially Vanyon has been playing HE a lot) to see what their units do and how to counter it.
General tactics against HE :
Shoot the Reaper BT early, then move on to Sword Masters as these are hard!
Remember that your missile units are better suited to a shoot-out then most armies with armour and SH. Try using one of them (rangers) as a flanking unit by deploying it slightly backwards of your line.
WoC :
Deploy back and use as much shooting to thin out oppônents as possible. Try to use artillery and missile untis wisely (quarrellers light targets, thunderer heavy, cannon everyting but in the right order).
Hope this helps a bit, if you have further questions please ask them!

Torendil pretty much hit it on the head. You can always use the Thane as a Rune Smith (I usually use that model as a Runelord myself). Then Use the Quarreler or Thunderer standard Bearer as a BSB since those units really do not need banners anyhow.
A tiny unit of miners can be pretty awesome too and can either come up the backfield (with a champ with a steam drill), or deploy them with your army as chaff (give them blasting charges in this format to make them fear charging your miners).

Thanks alot Torendil and Murphey, that is alot of useful information, I will try to see if it works.
I was wondering would most people accept a thane as a runesmith/runelord. Also should I make one of my thunderers into a master engineer to improve my cannons?
Many thanks for your advice.

I you make it clear at the start of the battle their should be no problem in friendly games. You can also paint him with a white beard to show his age.
As for the ME, he is not that great with cannons, as he actually doesn't do anything the RoForging doesn't do better. He comes into his own when used with multiple GT, but that's going to be impossible with your models.
