You can also get just the small rulebook by itself via many vendors. If you are just starting, you might want to keep your spending tight until you are sure what you want to get.
The Dwarf Army Book is a must have though.

As part of this, can someone with a whiter, longer beard than I (with barely a stubble chin to my name), please post a Beginners' Guide to 8th Edition and Dwarf armies?
It looks as though I'll be parting with some money in a short while, so, things I'd like to know:
If I were to buy the Dwarf Battalion boxed set, is this a good mix of Dwarf troops to start playing with?
Would I need to add anything to make it more viable? A Runesmith, for example?
Could anyone construct a pretty good army list for "out of the box" battalion players?
If I were to choose a 1K starter army, should I be buying models/regiments seperately?
What would be a good all round choice for an all-comers starter army, at about 1K?
In either of the two above options, are there any swap outs you'd make for facing specific, similarly new player armies? Say HE, O&G, CoW etc?
Can you please suggest some basic dos and donts with either the "Out-of-the-box" or "Starter 1K" armies?
And anything else you really wished you knew before you brought your first Dwarf starter army?
I'm not looking to gain any great advantage, just minimise my costs and amount of time painting

That covers the basic gist.
Then use the links on the first page to read up on specific units if you want.
As for what to buy, a battalion is a good choice if you want to have quarrellers or thunderers. You may want more than one. The 20 quarreller unit with great weapons and full command is a pretty versitile unit. You could use a unit filler 20mm by 80mm with the 16 quarrellers from the battallion to see if you'd want another battalion.
Read the 15 commandments first though.
Then make an army list and ask for feedback.

Yeah, the battalion is good. I'd go GW quarellers, pump up to 20, GW warriors, up to 35, and the OG. Then get a RS and MAYBE a BSB.

I love the flame cannon! Sure it might not be the best this edition, but come on! We can't just leave anyone who wants to use it hanging! I demand a handbook entry lol!
EDIT: And could we possibly have entries for different scenarios? IE, Watchtower, dawn attack etc etc? Even alliances for multiplayer games? And are there any dirty trick threads? Like I know several armies have them (banshees in buildings for one) - any really sneaky or underhand tricks for dwarf armies?
Also, if anyone wants to do them in the future could we have DoW entries? I know a few people including me who use halflings and the like for their armies. But this one not as important as the above ones...

Yeah, and there are some situational uses for the FC. WE NEED A THREAD! Haha. But yeah, scenarios would be nice too.

Added the scenarios and sneaky tricks sections to the 'to do' pile, jeez I'm gonna be compiling this until the next book comes out and it'll all be worthless again
Oh well...
The combat tactica is now added, please give us your thoughts!

Thanks for the donations both of you, I have linked only A.Wagg's thread purely because I think that TKR's is a little out of date. Please don't see this as being ungrateful, I truly am, it's just that I don't think that tactica was written with 8th ed in mind.

Glad this is here as I'm just starting out with dwarfs and whfb. It looks a little daunting at the moment though, I'm not quite sure which section to start with.

Go with the units you find appealing first. How about the Slayers, and the Daemon/Dragonslayers? Read up a bit on those!

Trom to all,
I have taken on the duty of assembling the tactica threads from all you wise dawi longbeards. (With Javidsons agreement, of course.)
Please, if you are willing to post any part of your wisdom on a certain army, let me know, so we can finish this beautifull Handbook.

I'm kind of surprised we don't have a Greenskins Tactica. I don't feel as if I have the experience to pull it off, having only played a few games...

Although stunted due to a complete lack of range, I will say the flame cannon has been good against Ogres.

Someone has to write it and it is a lot of time to do it.
Javidson has quit, so he is available only VERY rarely. (I sort of took over...)
Stymie has done Tomb kings -and very well!
Vanyon and me - High elves (few bits to be added yet).
So if anyone experienced feels solid enough to write a greenskin tactics, I see no problem. Just DO it!
Finish it, publish it and let me know. It will get included into the Javidson package, which he agreed to add into the handbook from time to time... (First Package will go when i finish skaven, hopefully next week!).
