Hey guys, in the week the brewery was offline I made my first small steps in working with greenstuff. I used GS here and there to fill gaps or in combination with super glue to create really strong bonds between parts, but now I wanted to try something more elaborate.

These are my WIP ironbreakers as of today. As you see, there is still much to be done, helmet details, chainmail, shoulderpads, the hands, the weapons and so on. But I think one can already see where I am going with it.

Critics and comments are very welcome, and indeed much needed to keep me going, I am so jumpy when it comes to my projects, but this is one I want to see through.

None too shabby at all, you did a good job on the helmets. I think you should bulk our the bodys a bit though, they look rather in the skinny side. and the arms look a bit too long, but overall, it's quite a good job.

Its very good for your first attempt mate but those arms do look odd. When shoulder pads go on it may sort them out but I'm not sure. If they're the same size as GW figs then pop a plastic arm next to what you've done to see how the sizes compare.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input.

Some of the "skinnyness" might stem from the fact that they are still lacking the final layers with the chainmail, which would bulk out the skirts (is there perhaps a more dignified word for it? :D) and arms. Especially the arms are at the moment not much more than a wire skeleton with one thin coat of green stuff, which does skew with the proportions.

But I think I will bulk out the chest of the one with the braided beard. The other seems fine IMO.

As dor the arms´ length, the left arms (which will hold the shields) are exactly as long as their plastic equivalents, but the right arms do seem to long... I will shorten them.

So you build them layer by layer?

I'm looking forward to the pictures where you have added some more to the arms. They look a bit alien now.
but at the same time I have no problem seeing how a dwarf will grow out there. I like the heads.

So the trick in advanced greenstuffing is to build by layers?
Thanks for the tip. I have been struggeling to make anything else than a bit hair extension so far.
I'll have to try to make things step-by-step and see if that works.

Keep us updated on the progress. It is fun to see projects evolve.

It has been a month... and a rather busy one (who would have thought that the holiday season is busy? Weird, huh?).

Anyway I have been at it again after this hiatus and while it is not very much progress, it is some.

I added the chainmail, which took me hours and I had to start over several times, because I was not satisfied. Finally I realized that perfection is out of my reach anyway and did as well as I could...

The basic forms of the shoulder pads have been added, they are still very much WIP but they show the direction I want to take them.

And I put some other GW dwarfs in the picture as well: (from left to right) Hero Quest dwarf, my concoction, 6th edition dwarf, 7th edition dwarf.
Just to show some scale (and my new Hero Quest miniature ;) )

And before anyone asks: The right arm of the model seems so stumpy because I removed a chunk. The pose I originally intended did not work with the bulk of shoulderpads and armor, it looked weird. The arm will not remain crippled, though :D

What do you guys think? Criticisms and comments are welcome!

That actually looks fantastic now, the layering technique really bulked them out and added depth. can't wait to see it finished.

Have a pint, on me. :guinesssmilie:

edit: Also, do you play warhammer online because that model looks alot like the concept art.

Thanks.

I am not one for MMORPGs, not my kind of video games, but yes, that is the image I used as reference. It is the first thing that comes up when you google for images of "ironbreaker", and the artwork and design is great. I had a look around and a lot of the WAR artworks are simply stunning.

Other artworks I wanted to go by are found on pages 4-5 and 37 in the armybook, Those look ace!

I did some more work on the shoulderpads and the faceplate of the helmet.

Posted Image

I did a quick mock-up with a spare shield and a 6th edition warrior weapon.

And here the shoulder pad detail:

Please let me know what you guys think.

sculpt is great but the hand of 6ed warrior is too big. Maybe try with 7ed minis, they have smaller hands. Rest of it is really good work :) Can you give us some better pics so we could see details?

Now that's looking nice! Great sculpting there, I'm sure he fits right in with the other Ironbreakers.

So, ehm ... do you know how to cast minis ;)?

Thanks, but it is only a mock-up, I just stuck a hand on to show a general idea of what I am going for. The finished model will have sculpted hands instead of spare bitz.

For the pictures: At the moment this is as good as it gets. All I have is an old cell phone camera that has no macro function and only a resolution of 2 megapixels. That means if I get to close it cannot focus (no macro) and from afar I get no details (low resolution).

But I plan to get a new camera as a chrstmas present to myself, so expect this forum to be flooded with pictures when I do.

Darn shame about the camera. This looks like art! I am very impressed! Soon you will be scuplting various models and selling them. I'd be a customer!

So I got me a new camera. Those damn things are pricey.

But they do take much better pictures:

Posted Image

I started to sculpt the armor on the forearms, plus the first layer of the hand. I did some work on the other ironbreaker, added chainmail and armourplates.

I also started to work on their weapons, I made three axeheads and I will do at least one hammer.

I am thinking about making the hands separate bits, so one can swap the weapons. I could even do some gimmicks, like left hands with axes for dual-wielding fun. Or hands with kegs/pipes (although dringing would be difficult with these facemasks...). depending on the poses I could even make hands that hold great weapons. What do you think? Would that be a good idea or unnecessary complicating the assembly process (pinning the hands onto the arms).

@ Tungdil: Yes, I do plan to have the models cast. Not by myself, but I will commission a company that produces miniatures themselves. More expensive, but much better results.
My goal is to have 5 ironbreaker sculpts (and maybe a collection of different equipment), since I want to field a unit of ironbreakers entirely made by your´s truly :whistle3:

@ Goldo& Gen. Lee Losing: Thanks, have an ale on me.

Excellent work trogdor! Those are some swank looking ironbreakers, looks like some of the 'breaker designs from age of reckoning. Can't wait to see em finished and painted. Cheers!

Okay, time for an update.

I made some progress on the second ironbreaker, did little work on the first and started the next two.

As before: Everything is WIP, criticism and other input is highly welcome.
