Hey guys I was in a hobby store near my house and a boat shaped picture frame caught my eye. So now I'm working on my first dwarf vehicle, an ironclad. After several web searches I've found plenty of old civil war ironclad pics to work from. The frame is around 12" long from front to back (need to refresh myself with nautical terms) and 6" wide at it's widest point. When you lay it down it has a very low profile, which works well with the ironclad approach. I plan for most of the boat to be made of wood, since the frame is. Anybody have any ideas or tips?

Actually the Dwarfs representative naval unit in the Man O' War game was exactly that, a Dwarfen Ironclad modelled after the original four ironclad boats used in the civil war. Other such units that the Dwarfs used were the Nautili, Dreadnoughts, and Monitors. (Submarines, Battleships, and Destroyers respectively)

In terms of making an Ironclad in it's full size, as the Man O' War models were to scale, I'd consider a wooden frame with plasticard plates. The Empire Siege Tank looks very similar to the ironclads so maybe if you could pull off some conversions you could turn one into a floating weapon of the Dawi.

If you're looking for actual in game uses for it such as a Normandy-esque invasion where the Ironclads lend artillery to the attacking Dawi or something like that remember that the engines and cannons employed in the partially wooden real-world ironclads created immense heat inside the boats requiring the sailors to take breaks in volleys or expose themselves to attack. The Dwarf boats would be completely metal and even more so reliant on steam technology so the seamen on board would have to take precautions.

The Flame Cannon crew including the mounted pilot would make great sailors and I imagine the bolt thrower crew would work well too.

That's actually quite a nice little Dwarf ship.

Makes me wonder what the huge things are in the online game!

Bonecrusher I think showed pictures of one he'd made, or was it Skull Krusher? I've searched for the topic but cant find it so maybe he can post pics of his model again or link to the topic? It wasnt very long ago, maybe a couple of months that the pics were shown.

That is a very cool dwarf warship. My ship will be much smaller. I believe that model is very similar to a concept picture on the Warhammer Online site, is it not?

First of all, I tip me hat fer yer fine endeavour o' buildin' a Dwarf ship!

Second, the most terms ye most likely be seekin' are bow (front) and stern/aft (back), board (left) and starboard (right), d*mne me soul, me rum-addled brain can't r'member the term fer the widest point, krud!

Speakin' o' rum, methinks ye owe me a glass or 4...

And do indeed look fer Skullkrusher's naval extravanganza! One o' the finest lookin' ships I e'er seen.
There's also Warhammer Ahoy! (search fer 'em) and the Cutthroat's Den resident Sharkbelly, who built a fine ironclad from an olde steamtank as well.

Captain, I thought that the left side was the Port side?

I thank you Capt and others for the fine complements and I will pass them along to my Dawi shipwrights. Just for a recap here are some views my ironclad that started out life as a wall mounted rowboat shadowbox that I picked up at a arts and craft store.

Also a couple pictures of my Dwarf Admiral, boatswain and pirate crew.

Skull Krusher, I must say that this ironclad steam ship is a marvel to behold. I am familiar with that shadowbox. The bottom featured a pull out drawer, did it not?

Yes it did come with a pull out drawer. The shadow boxes came in two different sizes. I purchased four. One for the iron clad along with two wooded round jewelry boxes which became the paddle wheel housing. The other three shadow boxes turned into one Empire two decker merchant sailing ship and I joined the other two together to form a large single decker frigate that had been captured by orcs. Both the sailing ships had full mast and ratline rigging and the sails went up and down when you pulled on the rigging ropes. Sails were made of cloth. As with the Ironclad both sailing ships had removable deck and were fully detailed inside and out. I will have to post pictures of them when I get a chance.

Cheers.
