Thanks for the comment. And you're right, I'm not totally satisfied with the light on this model too.
Since I try to build an army with my Marauder dwarves, I wanted to keep the same zenithal light as the one I used for my Ironbreakers, for instance. But this is difficult to make it compatible with a secondary lighting source.
A way to make the magic ball stand out was to paint in comparison dull and dark clothes... which could explain why you're not convinced by their look (I've limited the highlights).
As far as the skin is concerned, it was more difficult, since it's a pale flesh. I tried to paint in darker tones the opposite side to the ball, but I didn't care about the hand which holds the staff... my mistake.

Well... it's a test tongue.gif

@ Lord Ravenhelm: huuu, I thought the step-by-step of the ironbreaker could help. I'll try to post a step-by-step on a NMM blade in the future wink.gif

Don't get me wrong, I think the paint job is as good as ever. The main problem was the strong ambient lighting on the staff and then very little on the rest of the model.

It just seemed to cut off and go to a non-lit paint style.

Because of the high standard of your paint work it makes any differences stand out more.

Frank.

I have a couple of questions about the latest rules (I haven't bought the army book blush.gif ).
What is the minimum size for units of dwarf crossbowmen or handgunners? And are the standard bearer and the musician allowed for these units?
Thanks.

10 is the minimum, and yes they can have full command, though few people actually do that.

OK. An attempt to translate the article I wrote for our website: http://haekel.free.fr/

First, the clothes:
- base: Dark Sea blue (Vallejo=VA)
- shadows by adding to the base Germ. cam. black brown (VA)
- highlights by adding to the base Pale blue grey (VA)

Now, it's time to see how the secondary light could work. I apply the base colour on the beard, the face and the magic ball.
- for the skin: Elf Flesh + Dwarf Flesh
- for the beard: Pale blue grey
- for the ball: Green blue VA

It's gonna be difficult tongue.gif
I apply on the skin a wash of Magenta Ink + Chestnut Ink + Dwarf Flesh. Then I use Shadow Grey and Hull Red to deepen the shadows. For the highlights, I use the base mix, then pure Elf Flesh, then Bleached Bone.

For the ball, I add more and more white to the basic colour, and I underline the shadows with very thinned washes of Turquoise Hawk.

The lower part of the face and the sleeve are slightly highlighted with Space Wolves Grey and a mix of Blue green + white.

For the white beard, I simply cover it with a wash of Codex Grey, then Avaggdu Earth (A rackham Colour, you can use an alternative brown, such as Flat Earth VA). And I rework the beard with Pale Blue Grey, then white, then slight touches (I'm not sure this is English laugh.gif ) of pale blue for the reflects of the magic ball.

For the leather and the staff, here are my colours:
- leather: Germ. cam. black brown (VA), then Hull Red (VA), then Pale blue grey
- wood: Hammerfall Khali (Privateer Press Paint), Thornwood Green (P3 too), Violet Brown (VA) and Menoth White Highlight (P3). Some washes of Catachan Green and Snakebite Leather to finish.

Again, I re-work the effects of the secondary light with blue tones:

No wizard without hat!
I've chosen a dark red to recall the colours I used on my Ironbreakers.

- base: Black red (VA) + Sanguine Base (P3)

- shadows with Black Red + Dark sea blue

- higlights with Sanguine Base + Sanguine highlight (P3) + Khador Red (P3), then Dwarf Flesh. Again, some blue reflects are added to take into account the effects of the magic ball.

That's it!

I can't believe in my eyes seeing these step by step pictures...the mini is just amazing. you are really talented painter and as many articles as you write, me personally will never paint at this level. I think bravo is a tiny word... Simly amazing. (hope you realazed that the initial comment about the article sucks was a metaphor..) yahoo.gif yahoo.gif yahoo.gif

Fantastic tutorial! blink.gif Your painting skills are truly amazing. I saw that Bal-Torg tutorial on your site, and your minis in Cry Havoc which I borrowed from a friend yesterday. Both are good examples of your talent. biggrin.gif
I must switch to white undercoat. wink.gif

Yep. I switched back to white undercoat a year or two ago. It makes a huge difference.

Great tutorial Jaeckel!

One last question about the dwarf crossbowmen. Can they have shields or not with the latest rules?

Hi
It's been a while since I posted a message here.
Here is the final version of my Ironbreakers unit.
It won gold at the french Golden Demon yesterday, before two units of Dark elves laugh.gif
(see photos here: http://haekel.free.f....php?article131 ... sorry, it's in French)

These look absolutely great Jaeckel. The painting part of the hobby isn't my favorite, but I can surely appreciate those who excel at it - well done. Congrats on your Golden Demon win as well, it is well deserved!

Absolutly amasing, the link is awesome too, I love the skin on the steg. I really need to go to a golden daemon event sometime.
