The Call To Arms

rumours
Unfortunately, the current plastic Dwarves from Citadel are, in a word, horrific and are desperately in need of a re-release.   How, when miniature making technology has progressed so far and, correct me if I'm wrong, the models of every other army have seen the benefit of these changes, have the Dwarf models gone nowhere?  Nay, gone backwards? The plastic models speak for themselves.  Bask in their shame.

As a result of the GW range being so poor, I've begun to look elsewhere.  Although Dwarves are a staple of fantasy gaming, it's surprisingly difficult to find alternative models.  This is due to, in no small part, to Warhammer Dwarves lacking legs and other lines literally 'dwarfing' them (sorry).  I've stumbled upon the very tidy Avatars of War models, Lead Adventure's Marauderesq range and Scibor's beautiful sculpts but it's still doesn't fill the void left by Citadel's inattention.  Any recommendations for alternative Dwarf miniatures lurking out there, ideally those without legs, would be greatly appreciated.

While I wait to stumble across my dream Dwarves, I have my sights on the classic Marauder range and have already amassed a good few courtesy of eBay.  It seems the general consensus that this range has never been bettered.  When we consider that the Marauder models are now over twenty years old, this can be most accurately described as serious neglect.  GW have left the Dwarves out in the cold too long.  What then of their future?

Can you hear a whisper through a Dwarf's beard?
Rumours are rife on Warseer and Bugman's at the moment of a new Dwarf army book coming, possibly before the end of 2012.  While the release of a new book for their army is an exciting time for any player, I can't help being a little concerned.  The whisperers are saying such things as these:
  • A zeppelin with multiple organ guns (possibly Forge World instead)
  • Monstrous infantry: ancestor statues or rock golems (a dual plastic kit?)
  • Some sort of mechanical giant
  • Plastic Hammerers and Ironbreakers (another dual plastic kit?)
  • Steampunk Dwarves
If some/all of these are on the cards, for me, it's stretching the boundaries of what Warhammer Dwarves should be.  I'll be the first to admit that the Dwarf army has been a little short on 'toys', I'm just worried they're going to push things too far the other way and things are beginning to get a little undwarvish.  I'm not afraid of new ideas, Warhammer's fantasy setting should be exploited and the designer's imaginations allowed to run riot, but they have to ensure it all fits with the fluff.  After all, Dwarves should be a little boring, shouldn't they?  Or am I just as stubborn  as . . . well, a Dwarf?

There's many good alternatives to look at!

Personally I like:

Heartbreaker
Black Scorpion
Gamezone
Wargames Foundry
Black Hat Miniatures
Black Tree Design

But also worth a look are:

Harlequin
Hasslefree
Reaper

Check out this thread; http://www.bugmansbr...-review-thread/ (it won't let me link properly for some reason) for reviews on these and others. Although that list is by no means exhaustive!

We had a lengthy discussion on my own blog about the plight of the current dwarf range and our worries about it's future direction, hammerers in particular. http://www.bugmansbr...merers-and-you/

Also, I share your final concern. A zeppelin I could handle as long as it's not overdone, you may be interested to know that forge world used to do both a small and a large airship for warmaster dwarves. And steampunk dwarves are not far away :(. Already we have heavier than air flight, flame cannon, steam drill. More recent dwarf novels include steam driven traction engines, steam pumps and the like. While we're at it, add "Mole Machine" to your list of abominations. You know, like a steam tank with a massive drill on the front that can come up anywhere on the battlefield.

To overcome this (in my opinion) inevitable "progress" we need, ironically, to think and act like dwarves. To regard with suspicion these newfangled ideas, stick to the old ways and learn to carry on without them. Can we, under the coming circumstances, make our holds proud on the fields of battle without them? It will be up to us to find out.
I think that a zeppelin is a great idea, as well as some Skyrim-esque autobots that could count as monstrous infantry, but overall, I do not like the idea of too many things being added to the Dwarf list. After all, the dwarfs are meant to be unwilling to change age-old traditions.

As for sculpts? Well I don't think the new plastics are too bad. They're compact, easy to assemble and vivid. I don't like the flimsy plastic decorations of the Empire sprues and such - the less the better. But that said, nothing can beat a good Marauder metal. Compact, characterful and strong. The perfect dwarf. Not to mention they'll hold their value better than any of the new stuff.

Thanks Snugg. The Black Hat and Black Tree models are my particular favourites among those but, for me, they still don't match up to the Marauder minis. Maybe I just have a soft spot for them because they were the models I played with as a kid. I may never love a dwarf more. I've set the bar very high in my own mind for the next dwarf book so hopefully they won't disappoint. I heard about the mole machine too but I can't see it. We already have the miners and rangers to invade the other half of the battlefield, plus there's only so much more new stuff they can possibly release.

I just think the current plastic are dull compared to every other race's Spawn Man. It's like the last three or four editions have been released for the sake of it and no improvement has been made. The current ones are probably worse than the previous ones!
I agree on the Plastics, I have seen people make look them great with their painting but I dont think I can copy that. Even the new Skeletons look more exciting, and I mean...they are skeletons!!!

Now I have the problem that I have hundreds of plastics i dont want to use anymore and spending way to much money on old metal models.

Theatralic: I think any model could be made to look good if you were skilled enough. That doesn't excuse them. I've got a box full of plastics too which I hastily bought when I got back into the hobby so I could play big battles. I'm nearing 2000 points of metal now so the plastics are stored away, likely never to see the light of day.
