It Was Better Back In My Day!

I think it's a good start, but I don't think anyone will improve unless they're told the truth: the colours are a bit messy and your method needs a bit of work. I'm not sure if it's the brush size is too big or if you're not applying the layers of colour correctly, but if you look at some areas such as the hand on the standard bearer, you can see some paint has leaked over onto the skin from the blue clothing. And on the white beard, the hair has some brown on it. I'd look up some pages on the highlighting and layering methods and also invest in a few fine detail brushes.

I'd also always remove the mold lines in the models before painting, as they stand out like sore thumbs in the finished product, and as your painting skill progresses, you'll be kicking yourself having not done them.

That said, the metals have a nice quality to them and really, from afar, the models look decent. They have enough colour placement to make them look nice and good if they were being viewed on a table-top from a foot or two away, which is how they're going to be viewed in 90% of cases anyway. And of course, you're doing better than most collectors who never even manage to get paint on most of their models! (Myself included...)

Unfortunately I actually had painted these long before posting so as of yet I've not been able to apply any of the recommended tips that are basically the same from everyone. Next models will be better though.You're right in all cases and unfortunately the camera picks up what the eye disguises. The metal technique is done by applying (what was before the new range) dwarf broze or shining gold to the metal area and then giving it a coat of (what was) flesh wash. The same technique is used on the skin but of course with dwarf flesh. Many people have asked me abou the colouring of the skin (the miners are a better example), it is meant to show dwarfs coated in blood and sweat.
