This article comes about as a result of midday work time musings as to
the age-old problem for Dwarf Tournament players (Adi McWalter aside)
on how to compose a tactically balanced force in order to do well and
even win a Tournament. Now, these following ramblings are my own
viewpoint since being a Dwarf player for the last 10 odd years.
Constructive criticism is welcomed and I am sure will come! However,
certain criteria should be borne in mind. Firstly, that this article is
prepared with WPS tournament rules in mind, as I primarily play in
their tournaments. Secondly, that this must be viewed as a work in
progress and may be reviewed as and when the army books appear. This is
because in my opinion the Tournament balance of power is shifted in
favour of Ravening hordes army lists (i.e. Daemons, Chaos, Lizards) for
evidence of this you only have to look at the top twenty armies at this
years UKGT. I am sure this is a contentious point and your comments are
again welcomed. With all of this in mind lets begin… Unit Analyis I
feel that the best way to go about this is to look at each unit and
weigh up the cost v effectiveness in a Tournament situation.

This Tactica is based on the standard Dwarven rulebook, NOT
the Appendix rules for the Engineers Guild. The purpose of this Tactica
is to give ideas for a proper Engineers Guild list and the tactics
necessary to win with it!

"A mountain does not need allies. It needs roots, and it needs strength. Nothing more." -author unknown
The population of a Dwarf Stronghold comprises many different groups
and factions, which can be defined as three distinct types: Clan, Guild
and Cult. Some are famous, others rarely mentioned outside Dwarf
society. When a Stronghold wages war every element of the community
plays a part. Herein I will provide suggestions on how to represent
these various groups, giving examples from my own Warhammer Dwarf army.
In my opinion one of the most important elements of writing any army
list is to give each unit it’s own identity, especially where you might
have two or more similar (or even identical) units. Name them. Once you
give your characters and regiments names they will develop a
personality over the games they play … trust me, it works.
Arguably one of the simplest forms of organisation for an army is a
modular system, comprising ‘building blocks’ of set numbers of troops
(or in our case points). This allows small detachments to be
effortlessly combined to form larger, more capable armies. Since most
games of Warhammer are played to a set number of points (usually to the
nearest 500pts, or more commonly the nearest 1000pts) I’ve set most of
my ‘blocks’ at 500pts and a few at 1000pts, which makes picking an army
embarrassingly easy.

Starting a dwarf army
Before you start building your Dwarf army, you should be certain that this is what you want to do.
For example: Using a lot of money on dwarfs is kind of wasted if you
later find out you want to use vampire counts, or any other race.
So i would recommend that you read all about the races of Warhammer on www.games-workshop.com

Gone are the runic days of the 3rd edition when
you could even find runes which would kill specific creatures, gone are
the powerful runes of the 4/5th edition where all you needed was your
Dwarf Lord, now we have the 6th edtion. Are they any good though? As a
Dwarf player, I am not even going to answer that, but put it like this,
with only a few minor restrictions, a few less then in the previous
editions and the ability to give your characters more magic item point
allowence then other army, you can kick some serious butt. Next goblin
please......
Note: Unlike previous editions, Dwarfs no longer have access to the
magic item pool as well as there runes, but hey, you have some serious
runes out there.
